I think I might have to jump on the Babel bandwagon! Thanks for sharing those beautiful books. I haven't read any yet beeen waiting for a couple from the library, if I love them I might invest in one or two of those beautiful editions.
I definitely want to read Lessons in Chemistry and The Marriage Portrait. Both of those editions are so beautiful. Great purchasing with that beautiful copy of The Marriage Portrait ☺
I'm currently reading 📚 Lessons in Chemistry and it is a wonderful book. My book of the year however would be Heartstopper. I was so impressed that such a simple holsome book could bring out so many emotions and result in so much joy. ☺️
I “need” the Mole book!! There are no more independent book stores in my town of 100,000😟🇨🇦They have long been put out of business by corporate giant Indigo. I am shopping more at second hand stores, and so not always reading the most current titles. Even book depository was scooped by Amazon! Indigo stores are now only about 60% book and the rest in home life and stationary. Eventually book will be relegated to online as they just took away the ability for customers to order in books at the store by removing kiosks; now customers have to use their own device to order in. A bit of ageism as seniors aren’t always as handy with devices. It’s all about the market share and demographics these days, which is why I don’t take any stock in “top 10 of the year” etc. That’s my little rant on the subject😂
It’s always good to have an excuse to go to a bookstore and rummage around! My favorite read of 2022 appear to be To Paradise (although I have not read Demon Copperhead yet) but maybe “The Book of the Year” means something other than “favorite?”
Aha!! The paperback of this book is just releasing this month in the US and the publisher is sending me an advanced copy! I’m even more excited to read it now that I know it was the book of the year last year with Waterstones! I’m still a bit bitter that they do not ship to the US. I 😂
I have only read two books off this list, but want to read Maggie O’Farrell’s new book (not the £75 one). I had a mixed time with Babel, loved the message and concept, wasn’t impressed with the storytelling. But Otherlands I really enjoyed!! Which makes me want to read the Golden Mole, because I love nature writing with all my soul, and your opinions on it make it a must read for me! My book of the year, though is The High Sierra by Kim Stanley Robinson (my favorite eco sci-fi author) which is both a memoir and a nature writing about the Sierra Mts in California. I can’t wait for your list of favorite 2022 books!
What a beautiful collection of books. I have read Lessons in Chemistry and The Marriage Portrait. Maggie O'Farrell gets my vote, although Heartstopper was a real phenomenon this year. I am keen to read Babel. Although it's not a genre I read much of the reviews are glowing and it does seem to have something important to say.
I too loved browsing these in Piccadilly this weekend. Though my favourite book of the year isn’t on the list - Ali Smith’s Companion Piece. So understated, so funny, so brilliant - so Ali Smith! x
Waterstones could've include Lessons by Ian McEwan. I dont have the books released this year but I think Ian McEwan deserves to be included in the list.
Oh, I miss Waterstones Piccadilly (and Foyles)! I haven’t been over since October 2019 and I really need to get back. I don’t remember the independent publisher section. I wonder if that is new since my last visit. Can’t believe they have a third edition of The Marriage Portrait! I went for the slipcased edition and it is gorgeous, but the £25 version is almost as gorgeous. I still have to get back to it before the end of the year.
Yeah, I think they set up the independent publishers section and moved some things around within the past couple of years. Hope you make it back to Waterstones and Foyles! I could get lost in them for ages! 📚
I read The Escape Artist this month, it was excellent! Tough to read because of the topic, but excellent. Otherlands sounds very interesting, I’ll add it to my want to read list. Babel is also on my list, I look forward to your thoughts!
Waterstone's at Piccadilly is really huge, but they probably do not need us talking so much about them in opposite to so many small independent bookstores. Waterstone's have acquired Blackwell' s recently and get bigger all the time. All that does not mean though that they do not highlight important genres, topics or books. So, I understand your enthusiasm about visiting the shop.
i love how you praise waterstones as a place to browse. its such a genuinely good compliment, but i feel like you are implying that you would still buy elsewhere...? had me chuckle :)
What beautiful editions ! I have not read any of these. i have no interest in Heartstopper. I have no interest in graphic novels plus I think I"m a bit old for it . Also, Skandar is a no for me . Looks like my TBR shall continue to grow lol 💞
The illustration inside your edition of the marriage portrait is of a Caiman eating a snake in Suriname. It's by Maria Sibylla Merian. She was an early scientific illustrator and had a super interesting life en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maria_Sibylla_Merian
I love waterstones! One of the best parts of living in London
I just finished listening to Lessons in Chemistry today and really enjoyed it.
Babel was my most surprising read this year. I didn't expect to love a book billed as fantasy but it was amazing (if a little didactic in parts).

Itching to read Babel - it sounds super fascinating.

Loved this video and the gorgeous books on show. Thank you.

I love all of your year- end lists!
Thanks! I find it really interesting to go through them and find out more about these books.

The Escape Artist was fantastic.

I also wish Otherlands had had more illustrations, it`s a wonderful book. I have read a few of these already so I am excited to see who wins.
That UK edition of The Marriage Portrait looks fantastic. I think it's much better than the US ed.

Thanks! That’s good to know. Hope you get time to read Otherlands and Babel.

Great video, as usual. But can I ask a question? What's that circular light in your pupils?
Thanks! There little natural light in my library so I have to use a ring light when filming.
Lessons in Chemistry is now being made into a film starring Elizabeth Moss.
