Smelly, potentially toxic milk dumping in Beaver County has neighbors concerned

- After months of excess toxic milk being dumped on land west of Interstate 15, residents of Greenville are worried about ground water contamination. For decades, the hill was a dumping site for whey, a liquid derived from cheese production which is often used as fertilizer. But for months, residents have been documenting trucks dumping large quantities of milk that become toxic on the hill.

I worked at a dairy processing plant many years ago. Milk came in and was packaged. Sometimes it did not sell by the date stamped on the package. We had to manually empty all the containers. We put them in old 5 gallon milk containers. Those would then be taken to a hog farm and fed to the pigs. A much healthier way of getting rid of spoiled milk.
Use in all animal food a cow. will consume a mix of its own product ,just may not be stored for years though
Hi Patric - When we received a residential complaint in July, we ceased utilizing the agricultural field in Beaver County for these activities and sought alternative options.
Most recently, this includes sending the milk to an anaerobic digester that utilizes food waste in Salt Lake City to generate renewable energy.

The fact that we have a Team Rocket grunt of all people calling this out shows how big of an issue this is.
I didn't know there was an over supply of milk causing a need to dump it. That's so sad on so many levels.
The oversupply of milk is the defining situation for the entire dairy industry. Millions of gallons of milk have been dumped since the covid lockdowns. Wasted milk, wasted animal care drugs, wasted alfalfa, wasted water, wasted land - and now a major pollution issue in many states.
I don't believe there is. .. . 👀🤔
There probably isn't. Unfortunate reality of farming is that excess often isn't rewarded. There's always a need for good food (maybe not here or in your/my community, but in other parts of the world or in poorer areas), but the issue is putting out too much can bottom out the price for milk, leaving it unprofitable to make. Basically price drops where it can't cover itself, because on average, people don't drink *that* much milk. You have limited intake of a perishable good. What would've been nice is if for the milk, right before its sell by date, they donated it to shelters or poor communities. That's something they need more than the expired crud-in-a-can that most households donate. Instead they decided it was more profitable, or just easier, to dump it like a bad Captain Planet villain.

With global fertilizer shortages and 400% increases in price one would think this problem could pose a great opportunity for an entrepreneurial minded person.. That waste milk could be directly used as fertilizer or could be converted to nitrogen and sold for a profit opposed to dumped at a financial loss .
Cheaper to dump it than process it into fertilizer.....is there a plant anywhere close that can process it?.....its all about money.....dairy farmers of America are wildly over supplied with milk to be dumping it and not making cheese or milk powder condensed milk ice cream out of it. @@meyokkob458 yeah but they dump it because then they won't be able to make money off it. If there's too much of something people want then people won't be willing to pay much for it, the moment things become scarce (be that engineered scarcity or natural) then people are suddenly willing to pay for it. (that perceived scarcity is why NFTs suddenly got really popular, because of the supposed scarcity) I do wish there was some way for them to reuse the product tho without waste. Such as using it for bait or similar.
@@rabbitguts2518 so true
That’s insane, if they wanted to artificially inflate the cost why don’t they just catch less of them?
@@mandlin4602 I'm assuming because "local" small guys would catch a lot more and sell at a lower price. It's been on many local news channels but it never goes any further than that.
This is so disgusting on so many levels ! This is how we treat our planet nowadays ?? All because of saving a dollar and for laziness??? These milk corporations need to be charged and held accountable for illegally dumping milk on private property and on Land that belonged to the community… They didn’t even have permits to do this …
Thanks to the GOP now the EPA no longer has any power to regulate corporations like this anymore. If you want things to change don’t vote for garbage right wing assholes.
Angers me that those cows suffered so much to have all that just get dumped like that!! Horrific!
Cows don’t usually suffer when making milk????
Absolutely. Horrible.
funny how there is a "food shortage" going on in America yet its becoming a lot more common for companies dumping away fruits and veggies and milk.
This should be highly illegal. Its shouldn't even be Legal for a Company to dump water on the Ground. Everything should have to go to a Water Treatment Facility
I agree
You have no idea on what you're saying. I've spent my life cleaning up after environmentalist's have screwed things up. Just take a look at plastic bottles and bags that was all on the so called environmentalist's fault. I've learned when they get involved it only makes things worse.
Fools
Well I think it should be illegal for stupid people to have kids. Because we just end up with more stupid people
I like your Minecraft building videos
Price gouging anyone? Shortages? And if you really have extra, for the life of me, WHY doesn’t it go to under privileged people for FREE, if you are just destroying it? People and the government can be such jerks.
defund them all
You know the constitution says the minute all the citizens in the country agree on it, were aloud to forcibly remove these f***tards.
The government is paying them to dump it to keep prices high. Just like they paid farmers to destroy corn crops and held up all the freight out in the ocean. They are making sure they get back every penny of those stimulus checks back with interest and all through inflation and the taxes they collect on it.
Costs too much to transport it.
@@JohnDoe-yq8ox It would be a tax write off but no doubt they are being paid by the DOA to dump it.
I can just imagine the smell...I can barely stand smelling spilled milk in car..😝
Wow sad sad!! Good luck guys!!
Wow, that’s unreal. If it’s been going on for years, what are the new changes to milk for this to be happening now ? I hope they find a way to resolve this issue.
They aren't making the whey for fertilizer anymore. That means excess milk.
Sometimes you just gotta take matters into your own hands. I say shoot the POS thats the ceo responsoble for this. And the lawyers state officialls and the rest all involved who are clearly taking money to look the other way. Its time for citiizens of this country to take back their country. Start shooting now. F the questions. Its time for the crooked POS who run this country to die off.
They inject the cows with lots of chemicals like growth hormones, standard practice. There's a new shot they're also now being given (take a wild guess) If you drink cow's milk you're not only participating in incredible animal suffering but setting yourself up for hormonal cancers and other diseases.
Better find a way
According to the press release, they have an excess of milk due to hot weather. I am not sure how that logic works. Perhaps the milk is spoiling and unusable, and so they dump it on Whey Mountain.
My aunt told me about how she thought they were dumping blood infront of her apartments in Maryland. I guess this might actually be what it is cuz she said the smell was awful.
Thats what Is actually thought, thats not milk at all !!

You want a milk monster? Because thats how you get a milk monster.
Why is no one asking WHAT WAS WRONG WITH THE MILK TO BE DUMPED THERE TO START WITH?
KSL, keep us updated on the story.
🤣🤣🤣
People who did that should be arrested it should be against the law because it could hurt the environment
It did hurt the environment 😓
Arresting them would solve nothing. They'd be released in a few weeks, just like every other criminal.
Unfortunately, the damage is already done. If it's been there since the 70's, it's a 90% chance that the water table *IS* contaminated. Cleaning it up will be expensive, and unfortunately, it won't reverse 40+ years of damage.

@@Novastar.SaberCombat Where did you get that "90%" figure? What kind of tests did you perform to get "90%"? Just curious.
Human actions hurt the environment. Humans should be against the law.
Why didnt they use it...whey has value
Can someone explain why it’s blood red if it’s milk? I’m genuinely really curious if anyone can give me that answer I looked it up everywhere but can’t seem to locate an answer.
Yooo I can’t believe they added the Lake of Aeonia, this DLC is awesome
"We appreciate the concerns that have been brought to our attention" Translation: Damnit they caught us and somehow this got escalated to the regulatory level.
"to ensure that we are following all applicable regulations" Translation: We'll be sure to stop doing this as soon as we find somewhere else to dump it.
Whey has a long history as fertilizer and animal feed, it is also the starting component of ricotta and a number of other products humans consume. I have no idea why anyone would dump such a valuable commodity on land not in productive use.
If this dairy is now unable to process all the milk it is purchasing and literally has milk spoiling and needing to be disposed of this is a terrible way to do it.
This plant should be fined basically out of business. The company itself should be asking why for decades it was dumping so much money for no gain.
Were they dumping there first and then resident moved in?
Wow. I need the follow up on this! Also whats the red color??
This could've been such a positive thing. If they had sprayed the land instead of dumping into a stagnant pool, it would've helped the soil.
Now they have a toxic hazard to clean up.
Oh I can promise you it won’t be the dairy company who clears it up. The tax payer will.
Could be facing legal action??? A company that defied major laws for over 4 decades will probably face zero punishment 🤣🤣🤣
But if I was dumping milk without a permit I'd be in jail....
& you know this is happening all over America right now 🤷🏾♂️
Major laws, ,you mean EPA regulations that are loaded with agricultural exemptions.
Right💯💯 In the meantime it makes ya wonder where they dumping all that milk now???? 🤮🤔👀😐
Mikey boy looking a lil stoooooooooooned, thanks for the vid bruh
Looks like someone had a wood chipper set up by the water and got rid of people. Why is it red tho?

Not that I know of
They could have done so many things to prevent so much milk getting wasted, if they have too much then they could have donated it to schools or homeless shelters. But if it’s gone bad then why? Why did they let it get that way? If they can’t deal with it then don’t produce so much.
