Considering both Ava and Nikolas have murdered someone in cold blood (Connie/Hayden), they already are the bad guys. The things they have done to people and even each other are just as bad as what Esme has done. Nikolas gaslighted Ava and drugged her to make Ava believe that KiKi was haunting her and saying she belonged in hell and then threatened Avery. Ava switched out Morgan's psychiatric medication so that he became manic and that led to him getting blown up. And both of them have never paid for their crimes.
