Thank you for these great tips! Taking my first ever cruise in December. Now while I'm yet to be on a ship, I grew up on boats. My tip for on the water is thus: If you have a hat/cap/light weight head gear, its a MUST to make a tether for it. Use a lanyard or even a clean shoe lace. One end attached to the head gear, the other to your clothes. If your hat blows off in the wind, you won't lose it overboard!!

I've never cruised and I came across your vlogs on RUclips, because of your enthusiasm and extensive information I've decided to take my first cruise this year at the age of 72, I'm going to start small with Fred Olsen on a tour of the Scotish Islands and Lochs, I will let you know how I get on.

Tip for the Safe: Put one of you travel shoes into the safe (you will find it hard to leave the ship with only 1 shoe on ;>))))))

    My tips regarding luggage:
    1. This is the time to use soft side luggage if you have it, so you’re sure it will fit under the bed after you unpack. You will need every square inch if space in your cabin.
    2. Use a TSA approved luggage lock. Your luggage will be unattended on some cruises when they leave it outside your cabin door, and it will give you a lot of peace of mind if it’s locked.

19:43 #38 Never let your children order off the "Children's Menu" you have paid good money for them to be on board. They can try the lobster, like it or not like it, but if they don't like it the staff will immediately get a replacement meal. This is cheaper than finding out when at home at an expensive restaurant.

In addition to #24, it might be good to check for bedbugs. My cabin on NCL Breakaway had a nasty bedbug infestation we didn't find until the middle of the third night. It was horrible and I wish we would have discovered it at the beginning of the cruise.

You bet shops are expensive... on my last cruise i discovered i forgot a belt for formal clothing. Never wear those pants without a belt. So last minute to the shop, i've paid around 90€ / 77£ / 100$ for it. Did'nt find a cheaper belt. I'm sure i'll remind it next year. on the other hand... I found my shampoo for dandrift on board so i bought 2 bottles for the price i would only have 1 bottle at home. So i guess it varies from one product to another. sigarettes where cheaper as well.

I've been on 23 cruises and already have 3 more booked. Whenever someone asks me for tips, I tell them 2 things:
    1. Don't try to do everything on board. Many first time cruisers are so busy trying to do all the activities listed that they forget to relax. Pick out the two or three things you really don't want to miss and play the rest by ear. If you want to sit in the bar and have a drink, sit and watch the sea go by, or even take a nap in your cabin, great, it's your vacation.
    2. Don't be afraid to try something new. Take a dance class, pick out a song to sing at karaoke, learn how to fold a towel animal, take a cooking class, whatever. You might just discover something you really like.

I have been wanting to go on a cruise for sometime and now, here I go! September is a ways off and the app the line recommends isn't working well for me, so I will be calling to get it all straightened out before embarkation day.

What a great selection of useful tips!
I'd add: Before you sail, research your ship to see which restaurants and eateries are open on embark day BESIDES the buffet (and the MDR). The buffet is usually a madhouse because they always tell you "go to the buffet for lunch, up on the Lido Deck"...but on some ships, there are other options that tend to be uncrowded.
For us, on Carnival Magic and on the Vista the Italian and Asian specialty restaurants were open for lunch and had FREE pasta bars and stir-fry. Crowded buffet, open tables scarce...and just up a flight of stairs was an oasis with almost no-one else there. We almost felt guilty. :)

We got with TUI, #39 we used to do the buffet the first night, but the last few cruises we have use the main dining room on the first night of cruise. We have done table sharing me and my parents, ended up with someone Nan and her two Grandchildren both adults , also we have shared a table with someone who we met on a cruise a few year earlier (we did not plan to go on the cruise ) but usually on cruises we have bumped onto people we seen on previous cruises.

A few points I didn't hear. One, we always get the mid ship cabin near the lower decks with a window as there is no garrenty that there will be calm seas is there. Two, the few times we had a balcony we ended up just checking to see what the temperature was and never really used it. Plus balconies are on the upper decks where the ocean motion is felt more. Three, we did the Hop On Hop Off buses where they were available going the whole circuit with out getting off deciding what we wanted to see planning the stops after that. We found that booking them through the internet before we left it was much cheaper. Four, I don't know what other cruise companies have as we have only used Holland America Lines these last five years, but they have what is called the Orange Club option. It cost only $600 for the both of us to get and this is what you get. When dinning at the main dinning room, you get a different menu with the regular fair but additional choices like lobster and steak. Plus added deserts/desert wines. What we really got it for was a free upgrade to our cabin as the only cabins that were left were at the bow with an ocean crossing cruise. We got out mid ship cabin on the third deck. We also got free medical and I used it with a kidney stone that they took great care of me. Other than some paperwork, it was covered. We got priority embarkation, de embarkation and getting ashore with tenders. I think there was something else but I forgot what..

find out which cruise line has excursions which allow you to skip line at long line popular museums like uffizi accademia vatican alhambra alcazar rijksmuseum louvre orsay mezquita; find out if you can walk off the ship into the city rather than the boring port, if the city is three hours One way from port: berlin milan seville london paris cordoba granada florence vatican rome brussels

Hi Emma. I grew up on boats as child, we had river boats, speed boats and sea going boats. This changed as I got older and finances changed but I've always loved being at sea just never had the chance to go on a cruise. I've visited the Norwegian fjords on a holiday and an tempted by a fjord cruise.
My concern is that I'm very much a "take me as you find me" type person. I dislike dressing up and find the whole "show" of fine dining to be a little pretentious. Is there a cruise line that is casual and down to earth? Anytime I see dress codes I avoid them like the plague as I find the conversation tends to be people tooting their own horns. Is it just that cruises aren't for me?
The other option I have is private charter of small sailing boats around the Greek islands where you're expected to muck in with the sailing duties and come out of it with a day skipper license at the end of the 2 week charter. This is very much me however I do also like relaxing holidays so a down to earth cruise line would also be great!

    • @EmmaCruises
