An interesting detail is that (i think) before fighting mary, you can see James that instead looking straightforward, he sees at the side like if he is evading our sight
i think the red paper idea is great, cuz i dont think its us looking at him as a 4th wall break but james staring at this reflection. Red is used so much throughout the game for key characters/moments to help james remember so it being used here makes sense. Not just as a gameplay aspect but lore as well
Good take i mean Terminator 2 Judgment Day is a badass movie I wouldn't mind feeling like I'm T800 I'm honestly more excited about the new Silent Hill games I kind of want them to make newer content but I'm also interested in the older games being remade somehow for newer consoles either that or be ported
I interpreted it a bit differently. I thought that James is looking at himself through reflective surfaces. The game even starts similarly, with him looking at himself in the mirror above the sink. And this white paper is also only visible on reflective surfaces, like on the car, on the water in the well, etc. Kind of like when you look at yourself in the mirror sometimes and briefly reflect on the things that have happened. That's why Maria also reacts to James at one point, because James briefly loses himself in thought during the saving process. EDIT: And this small detail-after James finds out what really happened, he also avoids eye contact with himself and, at a certain save point, or rather, mirror, he turns his gaze away from himself.
I like to think its the game hinting at us James' has more to him that meets the eye. His blank expression and the deep red turns a broken, defeated man into a wolf in sheeps clothing
The red paper symbolizes a lot about James and what he’s mentally going through during the game. I recommend looking it up there’s a lot of cool info about it.
SH2 remake is everything the original devs at the time wanted but couldn’t due to limitation of the tech at the time. I am glad Bloober team worked so well and hard to bring this game to life once again.
To add to this I think the nature of a remake really suits bloopers strengths. They’re incredible at building atmosphere and horror among all the little details but they tend to fall flat when it comes to their original narrative. With a remake they get a well made script from which they can build their flavor of horror off. God I hope we get a SH3&4 remake
I think its a cool touch, honestly I think it opens up possibilities of being able to play other scenarios and see other characters faces in the save like maria.
This game dives into mental health. James is seen in the beginning of the game observing his hands and when looks into the mirror is when the psychotic breakdown happens. The game kicks off with what his mind believes and when he’s saving the game he enters in a state of catatonia.
i think james mentioned when u first encounter the save menu aka the red square is that he mentioned his mind is like being groped as if someone is controlling him and u can see that james is looking directly at the camera which is us "the player" meaning that we are the one who is groping into his mind since we are controlling him
Everything looks good to me only thing im concerned about is the new soundtrack cause the original one was perfect hopefully theres a option to switch between the 2
At the beginning of the original game, James is looking into a square mirror, disassociating and its that moment that he represses everything that just happened. All the red squares are reflective, and they also act as away for James to further repress the memory - to feel "safe". The remake shows it more clearly that the red squares are reflective
I also like when James uses the red square for the first time he comments how someone is poking in his brain... which is literraly what the player is doing
I can't help but laugh every time I see his face. He looks so fucking goofy in this game and like some of the camera angles are really just weird ones and it just makes it funnier the funny part is if you save with Maria while she's following James you can get her in the background as well staring into the camera which honestly makes it better that that's all in real time
To me, it felt kind of meta like now the player is even more part of the story and maybe us with our controllers are the ones groping around in James skull. I also think it's cool that Maria comments on James stopping in front of one now. That was so weird.
I prefer static. This looks like they wanted to change that up when it was way more unsettling that James is just staring right at you v him staring at the square.
