  • Landscape photography has some amount of copying. But there's photo immitation and there's straight up theft. Don't be this type of photographer.
    Visit: www.squarespac...
    My Camera Gear: bit.ly/BvSGear
All types of photography face copying and imitation. But landscape photography is especially susceptible because, well, landscapes don't move. But it's one thing to go out and look for a photo composition someone else did once and another to go up to someone and steal their photo. I call these types of photographers "vultures", other photographers call it "comp stomping".
Either way, if you want to be a good landscape photographer, you need to learn to find the great compositions yourself. Sticking your camera on top of another person's camera only works so often.

I remember when you photographed that place in previous trips. That is quite incredible! That was quite rude of that other photographer to try to get right below you to take the same photo as you. One idea you could do if that happens again is that you always could fart near the rude photographer - that would have the person leave really fast, haha!

Beautiful photos as always. I do think he should have waited until you were done to make his shot. I've had people show up at a waterfall after me and shoot the same shot I just worked on after I'm finished. I wasn't upset at all. Admittedly the area you were in probably has less obvious compositions and the one you found was certainly great but he has every bit as much of a right to shoot that as you do. The dude just needs to wait his turn IMO.

The vulture activity is why I like being alone. One so nobody does it to me. Two so I don't accidentally do it to someone without knowing.

You are bringing up a good point of hordes of photographers descending on a particular famous location, making the 1000th photo of the same object. I find it tough to deal with it, because I like to work a location in peace and without any other photographers. However, this is impossible for famous locations. Therefore, I resort to finding locations that are not well known and usually very desolate.

The last time I was at Mesa Arch in Utah, I got there VERY early (around 330am) to shoot the rising Milky Way and also to ensure that I had a good spot for sunrise. Just before sunrise, a tour bus pulled up and it got VERY crowded. Some guy who showed up late like the spot I was at and there was no room for him to set up a tripod so he stretched out his arm and tried to use my shoulder for support. Yup he was so close that he actually leaned on me for support. He soon decided that there might be better places to set up. (I wonder if my years of playing intra-mural hockey had anything to do with his suddenly sore ribs. 🤔 "Hogarth. Two minutes for elbowing." 😂)

Great video Brendan and as someone pointed out, you are way more polite than I think I would have been with respect to the individual who set up on your heels. For someone not to see the encroachment as a problem is to be the same person that likes to bud in at a line up or cut you off while driving and then get all psycho if someone does it to them. Disrespectful of personal space right now is also something that I am noticing all too often.

No owns the spot of land they shoot on (normally) Brendan so if someone comes over to where I've shot or I go over to where they have then it's a free world is my philosophy. However, it's common courtesy to at least ait until the other person has gotten out of the way if you are going to shoot as close to someone as he was to you. Maybe being a hobbyist makes me more philosophical on this sort of thing. Nice framing of those trees. Merry Christmas.

You guys had plenty of room to spread out there. So I get it. Sometimes compositions or shooting areas can be limited and groups have no choices but to be very close. I am the sad one that went over the comments, and Brendan’s replies made a couple of things more clear.
This guy literally checked out the comp on Brendan’s LCD, switched lenses and mounted his tripod uncomfortable close to Brendan.
It even looks like this guy was a member of the same group.
I would suggest some communication and even education might have helped here more than what happened now.
Imagine, I am in that place tomorrow morning and I do find those trees …. I might have a go myself and will have a great shot, but nowhere near as perfect as yours. I think none of us need to feel bad about that. What happened on that day you were there is just Over The Top.

It takes practise, and lots of time learning how to compose. Then someone can just walk up, set their lens up between your legs and probably go on to post and share that photo, claiming to have created it themselves. My approach to photographers like that is to keep walking around my camera and making it impossible to get the picture. Be unpredictable until the light has changed or you get bored of waiting. Good job on the lens change! My next move would have been to move even closer so you put prints etc in the sand, and make it impossible for him to take the shot (go for the shot with the 2 trees). Then stand in the middle of the composition and shoot another direction.... basically my approach "F that guy!"

I see a difference here. You are hosting a group. You are teaching them. You are getting paid by them. If someone needs help with composition, they might want to see what you are choosing to see. Maybe just ask for that photographer to wait until you are finished and you would help them to understand the composition. After all, these people are paying to learn. There are things they need.

Nope. Not on mine anyways. I encourage people to find their own creativity. It's the only way to learn. I'll then guide them through the things they find and help them improve them.
If a workshop is, "stand next to me and do what i do" you're not learning anything and not actually on a workshop.
      At least that's my opinion.

@@BrendanvanSon the shot that I treasure most from our Nepal trip was the boats on the lake at Pokhara… a shot I found (others found it too) but ‘my shot’ was as a result of being encouraged to find my own composition after 15 days of encouragement to not simply copy another person… be inspired by others, don’t simply copy.

Maaaan that shot at 8:45 is amazing! I love it so much. Namibia looks like a place I want to shoot in the future, such iconic spots.
    Damn that 10:45 😍😍😍

I had a tripod penetration a few times in Iceland and in California with some rude fellow Asians. Not even saying excuse me. Kinnda like something common to them.

By your logic everyone in the photo pit are stealing from each other then. Don't tell others what not to do. Mind your own business.

2 totally different scenarios. This is a wide open space with hundreds of trees. The pit is 5m x 5m.
But yeah, if someone in the pit is following another photographer around looking at their frame and then making the exact same one, they are at the very least being a jerk.

I genuinely thought the guy was part of your group , i cant believe the nerve of some people , i might of asked him if he needed me out the way, passive aggressive ! Despite that you got some great images especially the last one at 14:06 probably my favourite of this bunch, great work as ever, take care !

Well I guess I have a different take/view than most. You don't own the location or the idea for that shot. Yes he appears to have gotten a little close but your statement/inference about "stealing" your photo says your issue went beyond just his proximity. Particularly given how you spoke quite passionately about finding that comp, working the scene etc - or maybe it was more frustration. Anyway very good chance you're not the first person to take that shot or something close to it. Would you have been completely OK if he waited for you to move on and then took the exact same comp? I've travelled 1000's of miles plenty of times over the years to get only one opportunity at a location. While I'd never muscle in close enough to disrupt or inconvenience another photographer, I have no compunction setting up a similar shot to another photographer - even if I didn't originally see that shot. Just my 2 cents

At least it wasn't someone leading a workshop and spending all the time shooting for themselves and a vlog, that's really low :-) Beautiful area though.

Come on don’t make it look like it is a crime to humanity, you are above all an educator, explain your point without having to calm down, it will give people that have less patience than you to snap and think it is right.
Did he prevent you from taking your shot? As long as he is not in front of it, it is not a big deal, you shouldn’t even see it like a threat. I have encounter many people like that and I take it like a compliment.
    Please don’t be that guy.
I guess lack of sleep is causing you to be a bit short. You don’t seem to me that kind of person.

Ever been to dead vlei ? it's a gigantic spot with thousaaaaaands of photo opportunities, going up to someone's ass and shooting the same frame while they are still shooting theirs is straight up disrespectful even just as personal space goes, not even photo related.
