- After nearly a decade since he announced his retirement (again), Hayao Miyazaki is back with his next movie, The Boy and the Heron. This review will take a look at Miyazaki’s film and see if The Boy and the Heron is another masterpiece or if we should be scared that he has become an unstoppable force.

The Boy and the Heron Review | Hayao Miyazaki Cannot Be Stopped!
#TheBoyAndTheHeron #StudioGhibli #AniMat
I actually like the first act, it is the closest to a horror film we would ever get from Ghibli.
I thought the mannerisms in movement and gait were quite remarkable...a masterpiece in rendering character in anime
@@mikeevans4585 my favorite is the first time Mahito confronts the Heron, its subtle but pronounced shapeshifting animation is just, man, peak craft that shouldn't exist, I can only call it supernatural realism.
There's this joke that if Miyazaki died, his ghost will haught Studio Ghibli so he'll can work on another film.
*When not if
@x-rex7236
"If Miyazaki died"
I says.
Pretty sure this man would defy the Grim Reaper since the latter’s probably a big fan of his work.
He's gonna upload his mind and make more movies in the next 50 years I guarantee.
I bet that's his next movie idea.
Can't say I expected Robert Pattinson to play a heron. His voice is almost unrecognizable in that role
As someone who's not the biggest fan of some animated movies that rely way too much on famous celebrities, can this guy get more voice acting roles? I was blown away by his voice performance and I've yet to see this film.
Miyazaki is a master of his craft, and one of the greatest names in animation ever. Truely a genius of storytelling and characterization. And this movie is one of his best.
Really is one of his Best? I haven't see it yet because here in Perú it will be released in January, and i was worried because many of the reactions i've read says that it was disappointing. I couldn't believe it, because we're talking about Hayao Miyazaki. He never does a movie ay least he knows he is gonna do it right.
@@recetasfaciles2816 Its a great film. I'm not sure I would put it up there as one of his best, but its certainly one of his more profound works and so it requires more thought and digestion which is why I think some people responded more negatively to it. Don't expect to walk out of the theater understanding every aspect of the movie, and more likely than not you will have a lot of unanswered questions. While some may see this as poor writing, it makes trying to piece everything together afterwards an interesting and fun challenge. Without spoiling anything, to me the main themes of the movie were developed through the juxtaposition of maturity and immaturity as well as rejection and acceptance.
@@senerio2124 interesting. Thank you for the advice. I'm looking forward to see it
@@senerio2124 this is why famous authurs will write poopoo on purpose to see people wrack their brains to praise it lmao everything is deep if you try hard enough.
This Miyazaki never stops from making his masterpieces
He's the Stanely Kubrick of the Japanese animation world.
This film is not really anyone's masterpiece, the studio made better written films before. This movie stands in the same merits as 2011's Up On Poppy Hill as a decent watch.
@@danielgudinojuarez6729 Well no. The directing is the most important aspect of a film. Miyazaki doesn't write scripts for his films, he is a true filmmaker.
I'm so glad we got classic 2D Hand drawn style of this again -unlike the forgotten CGI Movie no one remembers or CARE about!-
We'll see how long this "Last movie" of his remains final ;)
Finally he gave an animated film the animat seal of approval since nimona
It honestly feels like a luxury for me to see a brand new Miyazaki film in theaters again, especially after watching The Wind Rises ten years ago and believing it to be his last one. And while I did enjoy this film, this one is by far his best film since Howl’s Moving Castle and one I could see myself rewatching for many years to come. And if this actually ended up being his last film this time, I’d gladly accept it.
I got to see the film yesterday and that was a great experience to enjoy! This was one of my first ghibli films I’ve seen since Ponyo, and it turned out really well with a great adventure, beautiful animation, and interesting characters. I actually saw the Japanese version in theaters and just like the dub, they did a great job! I will say it’s one of my favorite animated films on this year
❤️💖 I am happy and glad 😊 😃 that the Boy and the Heron made a lot of money 💰 and made a great opening at the box office!
This goes to show that hand drawn animation 👌🏻 is still strong and animation fans still support and loved hand drawn animation. Take my advice folks, if you are tired of seeing CGI animated films and wanted to see 2d hand drawn animation in the big screen, then go see 👀 it and check your local movie theaters if they shown the Boy and the Heron. I am going to see it! 😃😀😄😁😊😉 👍🏻 💖❤️
Oh Heck Yeah!
I hate to say this, but it looks like AniMatt might not get around to doing all his 2023 reviews before uploading his recap of the year, so we won't know the full rankings before it comes out.
Miyazaki 'quits' movie-making the same way some people 'quit' Facebook. Dramatic explanation about how they're never coming back ever. A month later, up pops a post. But it's totally the last one, they're really leaving now. Honest.
The Boy and the Heron 9/10
Nimona 9/10
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse 9/10
Elemental 8/10
Wish 8/10
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem 7/10
The Super Mario Bros. Movie 7/10
Under the Boardwalk 7/10
Leo 6.5/10
PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie 6/10
Miraculous: Ladybug and Cat Noir, The Movie 5.5/10
Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken 5/10
The Magician’s Elephant 5/10
The Monkey King 5/10
Trolls Band Together 4/10
Is that how you think AniMat will rank those top 3 in his best list in that order and if so why out of curiosity?
@@samfeldstein4498 I am putting in alphabetic order as well as in ranking. For the Top Best & Worst of 2023, it's with Animat.
He could put The Boy and the Heron at the top of THE best movie, or Nimona. It depends on him.
Hayao Miyazaki also said that Ponyo was going to be his last movie
It's amazing despite he's a gi san now Miyazaki still has it in him by making amazing movies as his earlier movies.
Back here after this movie won best animated feature
I hope Ghibli still can make great 2D animated movies in the future
*AND THE OSCAR FOR BEST ANIMATED PICTURE GOES TOOOOOOOOO...!*
The boy and the heron! (The crowd cheers but The characters from other animated movies Gasp in shock and Nimona sets burns the Dolby theater with her fire breath.)
I originally made plans to see this movie in theatres with my brother's girlfriend as my first time seeing a Ghibli and Miyazaki film on the big screen. Unfortunately, this turned out to be a limited release and my local theatre isn't big enough for those. Now whenever I see a trailer of this film on the RUclips ads, a part of me feels like I'm being mocked. However, I will see this movie someway, whether it be on streaming, or on home video, I'd even be willing to go out of town to see it in a bigger theatre (though not letting that be the only thing we do in the big city of course). Anyway, it's good that Miyazaki still hasn't lost his magic. Maybe a little but not all of it.
Ghibli films on the big screen are a real treat. we are lucky enough in my town to have an independent 100 year old theater that specializes in showing the complete works of many different directors like Terry Gilliam or Scorcese.
They have featured Miyasaki, Isao Takahata and Studio Ghibli around once a year.
They also have a Ghibli character chalk drawing contest on the pavement out front.
UPDATE: I finally saw the film at my local theatre during a one-day-only screening. Granted it was the original Japanese version with Eng. subtitles instead of the English dub, but let's not be picky. Anyway, I don't think I'll call it my favourite Studio Ghibli film and admittedly I got a little sleepy-eyed during a good chunk of the film, but I still enjoyed it regardless. Then again, I flew back from Mexico the previous day, so the sleepy-eyes may be more the fault of jet lag. Maybe next time, I should check out the English dub.
More ghibli, less wish!!!!
I just came back from watching this movie in the theater with my dad (we watched the English Dub) man it was such a great movie and it is probably up there with Howl’s Moving Castle, Spirited Away, and Princess Mononoke as my personal favorite Studio Ghibli films. The Heron Man was definitely the highlight for me especially Robert Pattison’s voice acting like MY GOD can he really voice act despite being his first voice acting role, like give this man more voice acting roles PLEASE!! Overall this movie was such a treat and I’m so happy Miyazaki is back to doing movies again and I wish him along with the rest of the studio good luck on their future projects!
I think Miyazaki just found a way to cheat a vacation. Good on him.
I can't wait to watch this film
1:05 - wait, did he really say all that? Including the PLS HELP I’M SCARED! Part? Or is ED just foolin around?
I kept avoiding the trailers until I watched the movie! Magnificent !!!
12:31 I thought she’s a boy!!!😱😱😱
The character Kiriko, may not be either a boy or a girl.
Kiriko is from the other world and is a pirate and a caretaker of the Warawara. She is more like a spirit.
At the end of the story she accompanies Lady Himi back to her place and time in Japan and that explains why she is there living in the residence when Mahito arrives.
Miyasaki and Studio Ghibli introduce many such kinds of characters in their films.
If Miyazaki is able to for his next feature, can he hire James Baxter to be an additional animator for it, please!?
Never gonna happen, that idea is amazing on paper. But Japan is on the other side of the world
Anything is possible.
@@danielgudinojuarez6729 Well, he did work on Wolfwalkers and that was made in Ireland.
I tried commenting on your channel directly but it didn't work. It's not much but I came here to say Merry Christmas and Happy new year Animat. keep up the reviews and animation lookbacks in the new year
1:10 I swear he's going to going be like his best friend Paku-san AKA Isao Takahata who pretty much died kind of the same way: announced his retirement near entirely after making his swan song masterpiece the Tale of the princess Kaguya in 2013 and was ready to direct a 20 minute segment for the movie modest heroes in 2018 but lung cancer literally killed him and any chance of that happening. Then again both Isao Takata and Hayao Miyazaki but especially Takahata for his bad habit of working anybody who worked under him nearly to death literally have been called the Stanley Kubricks of the anime industry so it wouldn't surprise me if Hayao Miyazaki were to suddenly die while working on a project or of heart failure in his sleep as this is pretty much how Stanley Kubrick died
I don't get it. Despite its flaws, why did you rank this movie so highly if you considered it one of Miyazaki's weakest works since Howl's Moving Castle ?
I wish this movie featured a cameo from a past character or something
It would've been cute if Sophie from Howl's Moving Castle (as an old lady) sent a postcard to the old ladies at the residence. Maybe the audience couldve seen it if they looked carefully.
Or Kiki Delivery service bakery good, was seen somewhere in the background.
To me there still were references but they were minor... I noticed stained glass on the doors throughout the hallway and thought of Howl's film. A large ocean wave... Reminds me of Ponyo.. the climbing up segment reminded me of Castle in the Sky. Lastly the parakeets had Totoro's belly pattern.
@@ourfamilyaccount If it was supposedly a final movie, and I was Miyazaki, I would try to have made sure to say goodbye to my creations by giving some sort of closure to a specific handful of them. Even Baron from whisper of the heart never got an ending. Even though Miyazaki didnt make him, he fits all too well in the magic world of the uncle, too.
@@Sadeness99 Good point
I really want to see this movie so darn Badly!
I saw this Gem of a film the same day I saw Godzilla Minus One, damn that was a good double feature
Will you review Chicken Run Dawn of the Nugget next?
If you an actor and they called you to work in Ghibli, you are blessed by every god of every religion
Not Miyazaki's best? You've got a point. But I'd sooner watch one of his sub-par efforts than the theoretic best of some other people...
Myazaki should have stopped after the wind rises, the boy and the heron was absolute rubbish.
That's your opinion
After watching several of his previous works on the big screen during annual Studio Ghibli Fests ever since 2018, I’m happy to finally see a new Hayao Miyazaki film! Not only do I think it’s the best animated film of 2023, but one of the best of the 2020 decade, as well as a breath of fresh air from the American CGI market with its beautiful hand-drawn animation, even if it’s from a foreign studio. I hope we get more of these films in that medium like these and bank on “The Boy and the Heron’ to win that Oscar for Best Animated Feature, even if most of you know that it’s going to be “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse”.
I loved the movie too it's a beautiful well crafted movie from a legendary artist and studio that I've not seen the likes of in a long time. 2D animation lives on in Japan and across the globe and How do you live the original name for the movie is hard proof hand drawn has its place in the world still in the age of CGI. I want the movie to win best animated feature giving the director another Oscar after earning two in the 2 decades if it isn't Spider verse or Nimona.
The 2020 decade is proving to be a renaissance for 2D animation, not only this film but also other 2D works like 2D fully handdrawn animated shorts created by former Disney animators like Andrew Chesworth with “The Brave Locomotive” and James Lopez with “Hullaballoo” which where short films that were developed for decades! They are all living proof that 2D animation can still be alive and well in today’s market.
Tbf spider-verse deserves win it just as much as boy and the heron, both completely go against the grain of modern computer animation, and both tell amazing stories
I’m hoping that the films like this and Godzilla Minus One will have a great impact on the filmmaking industry because quite a few of them have been rather lackluster lately, according to most.
Frankly, if you really pay attention, Miyazaki actually brings "homages" to every films he's done in this one film: from CASTLE IN THE SKY to WIND RISES, he places a little nod to each film, whether it's just referral (the opening prologue homaging the earthquake terror from WIND RISES to the climbing scenes (echoing similar action beats from CASTLE IN THE SKY).
The warawara remind me a lot of the kodama from princess Mononoke, the way Himi runs down the stairs is just how Chihiro runs, the way Himi and Mahito open the door reminds me of Howl’s moving castle.
He also pays special homage to his deceased partner Isao Takahata, in the character design and themes, that are especially reminiscent of "Grave of the Fireflies" and "The Tale of Princess Kaguya".
And you are correct that he adds a small (and sometimes not so small) tribute to his past films and characters that he loves.
@@xPrincessJellyfishx Yeah, but they also remind me of how they represented "souls" in Pixar's SOUL
Well done, Miyazaki. Even after you've announced your retirement, it's great to see you haven't lost your touch with making some great movies.
Wait, did AniMat give Miyazaki the AniMat Seal of Approval after all this time? Well, that was unexpected, but nice.
Approval.
he always has.
I saw it in theaters. The showtime for the english dub was only at 11pm and once 11 rolled around we had to sit through around 30 minutes of trailers. I literally shouted at the screen "Show us the movie!" Right at the end of the last commercial, everyone else snickered and when the Ghibli logo came on screen I heard someone comment "It listened!". It was 2 am by the time we got home.
My theater took 9 minutes past the listed start time just to quit playing regular ads, it repeated most of them too.
@@mattwolf7698 they showed like three different trailers for the same movie, "Migration".
This was first time actually watching a new Hayao Miyazaki film in theaters and didn’t disappoint at all. The characters are interesting, the animation is incredible, and voice cast is stacked. Although I will say it may require some rewatching and some time to think, It was an amazing experience. But I can’t believe Miyazaki is back directing his 12th feature film at the age of 83. That’s pretty amazing. But they don’t call him the never ending man for nothing.
Also, In terms of animated films, did he directed more movies than other animators?
Apparently and I only got this from tv tropes so if you want clarification go there but Isao Takahata directed the same number of movies that Miyazaki directed but his aren't as well known or as popular
You should check out Miyazaki's other films; like Castle in the Sky, Porco Rosso, Kiki's Delivery Service or Howl's Moving Castle
❤️💖 Wow! It's been almost ten years that Hayao Miyazaki almost retired and released his final animated film the Wind Rises. I personally loved his films and his directorial debut.
Don't get me wrong. I loved Miyazaki. He is my personal favorite and greatest animation directors. But he doesn't know when he choose to retired or not. I feel like Studio Ghibli should hired new directors to direct original animated films to continued the legacy of Studio Ghibli and their animation similar to how Disney and Pixar hired new directors to direct original animated films while the old animation directors act like mentors. Just like how the Nine Old Men become mentor animation teachers for new generation animators and directors that will later developed greatest animated films in the Disney Renaissance.
Overall, it is nice and amazing 👏🏻 to see Hayao Miyazaki returned! 😃😀😄😁😊😉 👍🏻 💖❤️
Favorite Studio Ghibli film? Mine is Castle in the Sky.
Miyazaki gonna take over the world from Disney XD
2:52 Grave of the Fireflies didn't lighten up though.
Me: sounds like he didn't do as good as he used to to
My Piplup: If I would have watched it I would've gave it somewhere between 4-6
Yep. Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli are definitely back baby! Eat your heart out “Earwig and the Witch” and Goro Miyazaki!
There should be a Ghibli theme park :)
There is one right now, may not have that many rides but it's something special
There's one in Japan. I'd like to visit it sometime.
I bet that when he becomes a head in a jar he will continue to work forever.
Not that I'm complaining though. But he does deserve to rest.
The movie is based on a book by Genzaburo Yoshino
Really Cool!
This movie actually deserves a 10/10! While Turning Red deserves a 3-4/10 and the Animat Seal of garbage, The Boy and th Heron teaches a amazing message about putting the greater common good above your own personal fulfillments. Turning Red teaches the opposite. Embracing the more problematic aspects of change as a positive feature? NO! We do our best to get rid of them! I also hear you bully others who don’t angrier with you. I want you to please make an apology to those you bullied. Understand?
As much as he hates the term, Miyazaki truly IS becoming the Japanese Walt Disney - I truly think he's going to end the same way. He's unable to pass his role on to anyone else just as Walt was. And when he leaves us there'll be no clear successor to him. And just like at Disney, the studio will fall into the hands of corporate leadership.
Watched the film with my family and we all loved it! Highly recommended!🙂
We Got Across The Spider Verse, We Got Nimona And Now This!
So it comes to this question, does "How Do You Live" stand tall as another of Studio Ghibli's master works? Personally no, yet does it stand well on its own merits? Mostly, yet in the end it's great to see the comeback of director Hayao Miyazaki and the Studio Ghibli folks before award seasons come into fruition. Feel like this is a rental at best so there's no rush to go see it 🙂🙂🙂
Hey animat I wrote a letter to Don Bluth what can you say about that
I’m going to check out the film next weekend with my brother so I can’t wait to see it. Oh, and in case you’re wondering, we’re planning on seeing the English Dub of the film.
How do you live or The boy and the heron which name you use is a cinematic piece of art that it's beautifully crafted hand drawn animation along with the world it features being a mix of fantasy and the world we know that only this artist can gives us. The story unfolding at the pace it takes I didn't any fuse about it I went along and was experiencing the story with the main character and I liked it and got what was going on thinking about it. The acting from the Sub and Dub is great and Robert Pattenson as the grey heron is a match I didn't expect to like I do now. If Nimona, Spider verse or TMNT Mutant mayhem don't get the Oscar I'll love to see Studio Ghibli wins again for a fantastic picture and I'm so glad that I got to see a movie by this man in theaters the best way of watching it. 🎨 🎥 🇯🇵 🐦 👦 😊 👍
Seen this last week on opening week and we'll, fun film.
Like your score, it's a 9/10 from me.
Of course, who knows, this wouldn't be his "last" film, at all.
Wonderful!
Pattison was great
16:02
Mahito wasn’t an expressive character was exactly the good thing about him and the story. It is a masterpiece
Well he’s .very hard
Ha-ya-o. Impress us by pronouncing his name correctly.
What if Miyazaki wont die?
If he did then he could become a cyborg and still animate
I'm kinda surprised you don't say anything about thé ending.
I didn't mind thé slow build up at thé beginning, it kept me intriged untill thé juice bits.
I really disliked thé ending.
They don't do anything with it, and it ENDS so abbruptly. After thé movie I had to explain thé a few People in thé theater what just happend.
Flawed but still worth a watch. I at least didn't hate it like Wish.
I admit that I forgot this movie was coming out so I guess it will be the competing against Spider-Man for the Oscar and in case anyone was gong to ask, yes a Hayao Miyazaki movie has won the Oscar for best animated feature before with Spirited Away.
The Boy and The Heron is so boring until fall asleep..should be 4,5/10.
Lol
The only Ghibli movie that made me bored was Earthsea
@@SonicSpyroHeelerImo The only bad ghibli film was Earwig
Totally agree with u about the first act . Its pretty slow but had its meaning . It made the second half super intense tho if u think about it. And i get the worlds being opposite but wish we got a lil bit more of the king parrot history and why he did u kno😢
