Playmobil: The Movie is one of the biggest disasters in both animation and movie history. The only reputation that it has is being called a rip-off of The Lego Movie. But is there more to this than a failed attempt to copy a more successful film? If we look upon what went into the making of the movie and how director Lino DiSalvo and the team at ON animation created this, maybe we’ll find something that stands out as a tribute to the Playmobil toys…or why it became a colossal bomb.

Never has a rip-off of the Lego Movie made me so mad before. I appreciate the inclusion of Princess Peach, but other than that, the toy didn't need to come to America
I’m glad that audio glitch was taken care of.
What audio glitch?
@@maddalonefarmsat about the 35 minute mark, there was a massive eardrum explosion that lasted for a few minutes
@@maddalonefarms The first time this video was uploaded, around 35:33, there was what sounded like some piece of orchestral music being blasted very loudly for about 50 seconds.
I was working when the original upload happened so I couldn’t watch it live though I had heard that there was an audio glitch so that it was taken down.
As for this film, I remembered seeing posters for this film and it didn’t look that interesting to me. Though what I found interesting is that this film is about a pair of siblings getting sucked into a new world and have to find each other again. Similar to what happened in the Super Mario movie and both star Anya Taylor-Joy.
I have to admit after seeing this on Patreon before being uploaded to RUclips, I do feel bad for Lino DiSalvo considering this was the first ever animated feature film he directed and he really was passionate about the subject matter and wanted to stay true to the universal and playful theme of the Playmobil toy brand, but the unfortunate circumstances surrounding the film such as the film changing distributors who barely did any marketing for the film, being delayed 4 times, being released at a crowded weekend with more crowd-appealing films like Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and Frozen 2 resulting in the film bombing at the box-office and at a bad time when audiences were experiencing fatigue with toy-based films and of course, the unfavorable comparisons to The Lego Movie, resulted in all that passion being for nothing. I really do hope Lino DiSalvo’s second animated film does better than Playmobil because the poor dude deserves much better than to be known as the guy who directed the “Lego Movie-knockoff.”
Probably copyright the only good thing about the flim is at least Anna Taylor Joy was better in the Super mario bros movie
No there was bass boosted shit in one of the interview segments he put in by accident 💀
@@dumpydude5073 oh I was wondering what that was
Nah It was an Audio problem during one section of the interview that why it was taken down
@@DanielLave25280 oh ok
She is always the saving grace for evey bad movie shes in. Just look at new mutants what a piece shit movie, that even deadpool and wolverine ignore in the end credits, but she was pretty cool as magik
After watching the History of Playmobil the Movie: the Lego Movie ripoff video 📹 with AniMat, there is something that I didn't that this movie have similarities to another movie than the Lego Movie. Most people see this as a Lego Movie ripoff. There is one movie that it did ripoff that not many people know. This is a ripoff of Labyrinth. I personally see this as ripoff of the Labyrinth. The story feels like a ripoff of Labyrinth. You know the classic film directed by Jim Henson's 1986 film Labyrinth.
Think about it, basically the story about the protagonist as the big sister who doesn't get along with her little brother. But she and him gets transported into this different magical world and the protagonists little brother gets kidnapped by the villain. She struggles to survive and adapt this new environment that she isn't familiar with she would later team up a bunch of new characters along the journey to go and rescued her little brother from the villain. In the end, she defeats the villain and rescued her little brother in time and she reconciled her relationship with him and she becomes a better person. Wow, this is basically Labyrinth but done wrong.
It's like Labyrinth expect suck out all its charm and uniqueness, make the story predictable, make the characters unlikable, make the songs 🎵 bland and have the villain suck out all his charm and uniqueness and make him more childish and annoying and make all the characters into toys instead of unique strange looking fairy tale creatures and make the world building dull 😑 and boring to look at.
How dare of you ripoff Labyrinth, filmmakers! I would rather watched Labyrinth than this! 😠😡🤬👿
The creators did say they went and watched a bunch of 80s movies to get inspiration for the films heart. So it’s not out of the realm of possibility that Labyrinth might’ve been one of the movies in their marathon.
Oh yeah
I need to be honest, was I the only one who pulled a “Leonardo DiCaprio pointing at the screen” moment when Just2good was revealed as the special guest? So cool that she got to bring her perspective onto Playmobile and this movie!
Also awesome video as always Animat!

Wow, I cannot believed it's been five years since the Playmobil the Movie released since 2019.
Happy Un-5th Anniversary, Playmobil the Movie!
While this movie is bad, I do love the animation for it. It's pretty well done and looks good. It's not realistic like the LEGO Movie but it's still well done
Speaking of Arctic Dogs (which I personally find a bit overhated by the way) I'd love to see you do a History of that film video as well
Fun fact, there is not that much info on the production of Arctic Dogs. It was always meant for a straight to dvd release.
Oh yeah, would love to see him talk about Missing Link. A Laika film that came out in 2019 which flopped hard when it came out as it was overshadowed by Captain Marvel and Shazam when it came out and it was pulled in theatres for 2 weeks after it was released to not try to compete with Endgame.
An Animat & Just2Good crossover was not on my... life bingo card, but here we are.
I hope the upcoming pharrel Williams biopoc Piece by Piece would be successful.
And imagine a part 2 to The 10 biggest animated box office bombs where this movie is in it, along with Artic Dogs, Ruby Gillman, Onward, and Strange World.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think it also has one of the worse 2nd weekend drops in history: over -78% on the domestic side. Yikes!
Can we just take a moment to be surprised that Daniel Radcliffe's voice strongly resembles Ewan McGregor's 😳😃
The more I think about it, the more I realise that The Lego Movie kind of became the Shrek of it’s time. They were both popular and acclaimed films that spawned hit franchises but influenced animation and cinema more for worse than for better in which they inspired several films that tried and failed to emulate their style with only one good exception. (Hoodwinked and Barbie respectively)
And in both cases there was a year where an instalment in said franchise was released but failed and caused audiences to lose interest as well as another terrible knock off that ultimately became the final nail in the coffin for the trend that franchise started.
In 2007, Shrek the Third came out and caused the decline of Shrek’s popularity and Happily N’ever After was released in the same year and ended the fairy tale spoof genre on an abysmal note for the time. The same thing ultimately happened in 2019 where in the same year The Lego Movie 2 came out and flopped, both Uglydolls and Playmobil became critical and box office disasters and are the reason why we don’t see many animated films based on toy brands anymore.
Insert overused ‘if I had a nickel’ joke here.
There's one contributing factor that you forgot to mention about why this movie failed at the box office (Albiet, not the SOLE reason).
Probably due to the film's poor reception at Annecy, STX reduced the price of EVERY domestic ticket to $5 at a time where the standard price at the time was at least 3x that ammount.
Production History videos that we should get on 2020's films
* Extinct-Adam DeVine's failed toy commercial that was quickly forgotten as it was hated by critics
* Rumbles-Terry Crews' Monsters' Inc rip-off you considered a guilty pleasure.
* Marmaduke 2022-It's infamous reputation says it all.
* Paws of Fury-I bet the reason it is mean-spirited is because of the success of The Emoji Movie. It even the same message as that one.
* Rally Road Racers-John Cleese's failed toy commercial that made Oogieloves levels of low numbers at the box-office. There must be a good reason it failedTHAT hard.
I’m shocked that they have Anya Taylor Joy as Marla before she got played Princess Peach in the Super Mario Movie from Illumination, Chris Pratt as Mario and emmet and Charlie Day as Benny and Luigi in a Lego movie ripoff
Coincidence? I THINK NOT!!!!
And on Memorial Day weekend, Chris Pratt was Garfield and Anya Taylor Joy as Furiosa.
@@Starwarsfanboy0928 yea
Personally, I have no hatred for Anya Taylor Joy. She's very hard working, but voice acting is not her best suit!!
I’ll give playmobil the movie this, there’s no toilet humor.
Fairly low bar to clear.
27:09 Bro
Not even on Troll in Central Park or Gumby Movie levels
Fun fact: STX had nearly every theater in the US price every ticket to the film at $5 in an attempt to attract people (obviously it didn’t work).
Wow, that explains why when I went to see Ruby Gillman about a year ago, the cashier told me to pay 5 dollars than the usual 15 bucks!!! But yeah, if a Dreamworks or STX is so terrible they want to make your viewing experience worthless!!!!!
28:45 Don’t forget to mention “Spies In Disguise” also came out on December 2019, and yet because of that, it underperformed harder than DreamWorks’ “Mr. Peabody & Sherman”.
Ouch! What’s even worse is that blue sky studios shut down in 2021. Luckily, Nimona Managed to be saved by Netflix & Annapurna pictures.

1. Oh hey Its back up (We all know it was the audio during one part that must slipped though)
2. I have no comment about the movie itself since I have not seen it myself But from what I heard about it was: If you take The Lego Movie
and then you make it Playmobil themed and make a story too much like The Lego Movie
And PRESTO!!!! You get the Playmobil Movie
To repeat what I said in the first upload:
I see a lot of contrasting the quality between this and Mario as examples of times Anya was in an animated film, but you can also make a similar type of contrast between this and Furiousa when it comes to films where Anya wasn’t glammed up/“being sexy”
@@DocZFlux Oh yeah, Furiosa was possibly the best performance I had seen from Anya Taylor-Joy since I saw her in The Menu.
Well for someone like anya thats hard, unless guillermo they toro cast her as a creature with a shit load of make up on with no eyes that speak spanish like in pans laberyth.
Thanks for the fix 👍
thanks for having me on, loved the channel for so many years!!!
Super 4 is lowkey nostalgic for me
From what was described in the making of portion and by the creators on the influences of the film, Playmobil the movie doesn’t seem like it was intentionally setting out to capitalise on the Lego Movie’s success at all. It shares some surface level comparisons, sure, but when you learn about from how the director researched the film by observing how collectors and kids interact with the toys and the inspiration he got from films from his own childhood from the 80s, it’s clear the parallels to The Lego movie weren’t intentional but simply two creators making different calculations to come to similar conclusions as it were. That bit of context makes Playmobil the movie’s labelling as a “Lego movie rippoff” a lot sadder.
It really is a shame something these creators put so much heart and earnesty into get trashed for sharing themes with The Lego Movie. The film may not be perfect by any means, but I do have to wonder if, had the Lego movie not been a thing, would this movie get anywhere near as much flack as it got?
I have never seen the Playmobil movie myself, I saw a lot of the bad reviews back when it was first released and, like others, I didn’t go see it since I brushed it off as yet another film trying to rip off Lego movie’s formula. But learning the context behind the creative decisions, I now low key want to give it a watch and see if the bad press was truly deserved. Maybe this is one of those films that deserves a critical re-evaluation by a fresh pair of eyes.
I remembered growing up, the local toy store that my mom always took me and my sister to (Kaleidoscope Toys in Round Rock, Texas) had an entire section dedicated to Playmobil. We’d usually buy at least one or two sets and they were fun to play with! (Although, we still preferred Legos.😅)
When I first heard about the movie, my initial reaction was “Huh, I didn’t think Playmobil was still popular..."🤨
The most that I’ve ever saw of it was just your review, and after learning about its production, I honestly view this more as a tragic story.
While it did have a talented director & voice cast, it just couldn’t escape the unavoidable similarities to The Lego Movie or truly understand why that became such a great animated film, and the numerous delays/lack of interest in toy-based movies was the final nail on the coffin.
With the rough few days I’ve been having, another great editorial video was just what I needed to help me feel better.
So, thank you, AniMat & just2good!🧡💙
(My mom, who’s already a Covid-19 long-hauler has been sick, and we just found out that she tested positive…AGAIN!!!😫)
12:46 - 14:26 Wow I cannot believed that Lino Disalvo directed this movie?! This is the same man who is behind the head of animation of Disney's Frozen! One of the most beautiful 😍 visual effects on a Disney animated movie.
How did go from this animated masterpiece to this garbage?! How did he go down hill?!
I’m very happy you fixed the audio problem. As I said last time, it’s so cool that you and just2good team up for this awesome history video. It’s a really wild story of how the Playmobil movie started, what’s been happening, and how playmobil is doing these days.
Wait until they find out what Sonic: Project Revenge is based on (go play this in SHC 2024)
The only movies based on toys that have been released after the Lego movie hype died are Transformers one and that Pharrell Williams biopic.
To be fair, Transformers is a big name toy brand to be made in feature films so it's no surprising that people went to go see it anyway
Playmobil deserves better than this movie.
Especially when it’s a toy that reminds people of Lego no matter what. (Like the Heathcliff/Garfield comparisons)
I can't forgive how little the characters resemble the toys they're based on. The way the characters move is just too stretchy, and the face change completely robbed the toy's iconic identity. It's a shame.
hopefully there’s no Mega Blocks movie I have no clue what are they gonna make of it.
The History of DreamWorks Animation Studios + - Animation Lookback
No more earrape :(
Ah what's next? A Minec-
Oh wait, nevermind.
Have you gotten a chance to play EM: Rebrushed yet? Or are you waiting until you've beaten it to review it?
I feel like the only worse time the Playmobil movie would of been released is if it was pushed back another three months. Which at that point they would of just abandoned the idea of a wide release and just throw it to streaming.
On a semi-related note, I have a 95% hunch that release date of Frozen 2 forced Paramount to push the first Sonic movie back and change the design for Sonic. (That and also a healthy dose of Sega saying "I told you so")
27:11 Oh, I thought you were going to mention A Troll in Central Park for a moment.
I find it one of the most hilarious ironies in animation that according to imdb the co-director of Arctic Dogs Dimos Vyrsellas worked on the animation for the 2009 Playmobil movie and ironically that movie got its worst box office record broken by the Playmobil movie 10 years later
I might get a lot of beef, but I feel giving the film to On Animation Studios was terrible idea from the very beginning of production. They are a smaller studio who are not unionized and their executive management are exactly like Skydance animation who are basically clueless at running a movie. There's a reason why you don't see people talking about the little prince or that miraculous ladybug movie in a positive light, it's because those films are poorly executed and have mixed messaging that nearly ruins your viewing experience. Look, I'm not the biggest fan of Playmobil but wow it really shows how it's movie is shameful at ripping off the Lego movie!!
The Little Prince movie is actually really good, and I love the stop motion moments.
8:13 funny enough, mcd's just recently did a Playmobile promo few months ago, it was an all animal series with an inviromental freindly theme.
The sound glitch got fixed!!
In terms of AniMat’s history videos, we had “The Emoji Movie” in 2018 and Warner Bros.’ “Lego Movie” franchise. With “Playmobil: The Movie” in 2024, this would complete a trilogy of videos about the short trend of animated films failed to capitalize on the toy brand. Who would have thought of it?
Bruh
Three more weeks until your 15th anniversary of your channel, plus when are you going to do the history of Nimona video
That would be saved for animation look back: blue sky Studios.
Say on what you about Frozen 2, at least it is way more watchable and enjoyable 😉 that this Lego Movie/Labyrinth ripoff!
Ironically, the actor who played the main villain actually enjoyed the role.
Oh good, the sounds of death have been banished.
The out of context Twitter feed posted the audio glitch, apparently.

Good Review, but *I* just want to see "AniMat's *Classic* Reviews: Batman Vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles"! PRONTO!
Playmobil is a toy that holds a lot of sentimental nostalgia to me because it was what initially introduced me to construction toys & it was what my brother & I collected back in our younger years (especially knights & pirates), so when the first European trailer dropped, I was willing to give it the benefit of the doubt because I liked the idea of live-action people being transported into a toy world. So to finally watch the movie & consider it a mediocre disappointment is kinda soul-crushing for me.

Does anyone else find it weird that this movie came out the same year as the LEGO Movie’s sequel?
A Playmobil Movie 🎬 could've been good if it's trying to be its own thing instead being a Lego Movie copycat clone. Wow. And I thought Disney musical clones of the 90s and Shrek/DreamWorks comedy knockoffs were bad enough.

I was just wondering when you might plan on adding another episode to the Disney animation look back series.
