  • Here is a link to a band I would buy! I would just cut it in half and then tie the ends so I have a small knot at the end. amzn.to/2Wa7yEA
    If that band is not available here is another one: amzn.to/2S9xeyU

      I started at age 45. Between life and COVID and some hip issue not related to judo, I just got my blue belt (8 years). The journey isn’t over and so far so good! Take your time! If you’re not 6 years old and training toward an Olympic goal, use judo for what it is: a great self-development tool with added benefits of self-defense application. Good luck!!

    Do you think regular hip airplane (as a warmup for example) in your strength training is a great way to indirectly improve your uchimata? Since the whole purpose of hip airplane is to strengthen the hip stabilizing muscles (as well as ankle through calf) and hamstring and help you control them better (also helps if you have lacking core and thoracic mobility if you include the rotation to it). Doing uchimata to finish almost looks like doing the hip airplane to begin with.

    @Travis Stevens what bands do you recommend? What do you think about the gi grip handles for uchikomi bands? Mount the bands at waist height?

    Can you tell which height is the ideal to put-setup the elastic bands?Thanks for the great videos!

    This is SO awesome. 26 years ago when I did judo, I used to always drop my head before the initial pull. I thought this was what everyone did. I practiced that way for YEARS. I had a VHS tape with one of my matches, and I noticed my head went down. It looked funny, but I didn't know how to fix it, or whether I needed to fix it.

    Fast-forward to today. I'm too heavy to put all my weight on my son (we do BJJ) during quarantine, so instead we started doing judo. We were practicing uchikomi while my daughter was taking video, and I noticed that I'm still dropping my head. Coach Travis, it looks like you're lowering your level with your knees, and your head is up. I'm guessing you probably get better thrust, a better element of surprise, and greater speed. Is there anything else I left out? I think you answered my 26-year-old question!
    Thanks so much!
    Edit: I figured at least some of it. I was bending at the waist, not at the knee. It's just a slight bend of the knees, right? I'm guessing it also helps with getting closer to your opponent?

    • @TravisStevensgrappling
      @TravisStevensgrappling  4 года назад +6

      You are right you should be keeping your head up. But I do that to make sure I can see my opponent. If I'm looking at his feet I'm more likely to lose the gripping battle.
      And yes a slight knee bend is key!

      @@TravisStevensgrappling Thanks so much, Coach Travis!
      I did lots of repetitions of the first exercise today with the uchikomi band tied to a tree. My son and I later practiced the same movement with my head held up, and...behold, I could see my the grips at the same time! :)
      My lower back was feeling the burn, and I'm probably going to begin feeling it even more tomorrow. It's a good first step towards learning to do it correctly.
      Thanks again.

    Travis , awesome video, can you also use these excercise evolutions to help get lower in your rotations for turn throws? As a bit of a taller dude and still new to training, i find myself above ukes belt alot in my turns. Also do you have any reccomendations as far as the mount height of the ring used to hold the band?

    Thank you for these videos Sensei Travis, they are very helpful. I have recently obtained your Takedown Blueprint set as a BJJ player my stand up has always been the area that I feel needs the most work. Apart from grip fighting what takedown (s) would you suggest focusing initial study on? I wanted to pick one or two high % throws and study and drill them as much as possible. Thank you for your time.

    • @TravisStevensgrappling
      @TravisStevensgrappling  4 года назад

      It really does depend on what type of game you want to play on bottom. But you could start with a foot sweep and a Taio.

      @@TravisStevensgrappling Thank you! I will get started studying and making notes. I will also use your solo drills in the interim to work the movement patterns. Then start drilling once the gyms start to reopen.

    What are some drills/exercises you do to keep your shoulders and hips mobile and agile? I lift a lot as part of my routine and feel that I my my hips/shoulders get tight and have to warm up a lot. Even then my hips seem slow and tight when doing sweeps or ne waza. Thanks again for another awesome video!
