- Here is a link to a band I would buy! I would just cut it in half and then tie the ends so I have a small knot at the end. amzn.to/2Wa7yEA
If that band is not available here is another one: amzn.to/2S9xeyU
Uchikomi Bands are something I have used throughout my entire career as a Judoka! It's a great tool to really help with your cardio or weight loss. It can also be a great teaching tool for beginner level judoka. The video shows some of my favorite patterns along with some things to avoid doing.

Just recently started Judo as a purple belt in BJJ. Thanks for the inspiration!
How’s it going
Thank you so much for these video. They've been super helpful during the whole pandemic!
Beautiful demonstration and explanation ! I recently started Judo and this has helped with my Uchikomi .
Excellent video, Thanks for helping all judokas in the World.
Thanks. I'm glad you like it. I'm trying my best.
You the man Travis!!!!
Nice video. Thank you !

Thanks for sharing all of these videos with your movements I've learned alot
I'm glad you have been able to learn! Thats why I do it.
More more more please, Sensei.. Thanks.
Thank you again. Great content and a great benefit for Judo.
My pleasure! I'm glad you think this really does help judo!
This is wonderful... Thank you! 🙏🙏🙏
You're so welcome!
Love your tutorials. Thanks Travis stay blessed ✊🏼
Thanks, you too!
I have been wanting to study and train judo for years but life sometimes has other plans. I will be, hopefully, starting my journey next week. I am so thankful for these videos. I'll be doing these as often as I can. Thank you for all that you do Travis.
I started at age 45. Between life and COVID and some hip issue not related to judo, I just got my blue belt (8 years). The journey isn’t over and so far so good! Take your time! If you’re not 6 years old and training toward an Olympic goal, use judo for what it is: a great self-development tool with added benefits of self-defense application. Good luck!!
Simply brilliantly explained, thank you so much Travis! A real pleasure watching your videos.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Awesome stuff, I like these videos! Would you recommend focussing on speed, strength or technique with uchi komi (or a combination)? And does this differ with band vs a real uke?
Great tutorial as always. Really useful.
Glad you think so! And thanks for leaving a comment I appreciate it.
Really good and usefull!
Glad you think so!
Thank you Travis for helping everyone. Awesome dude and content as always.
I'm glad you enjoy it. And thanks for watching and leaving a comment I love to hear from everyone.
Did my best to do these exercises. I really benefited from this video. Thank you, Jim
Thats awesome. I'm glad it helped.
Thank you!!!
You're welcome!
Great one sensei Kesa gatame waiting Oss
Perfect thing to do now that all bjj is canceled. Might as well practice my stand up game. Bless you Travis, this helped a lot
I'm so glad it helped Ayoub!
Thanks as always you are really helping us get through this hard time. Can you do a clip on solo Sumi please
I can try yes.
Great video
Thanks!
Do you think regular hip airplane (as a warmup for example) in your strength training is a great way to indirectly improve your uchimata? Since the whole purpose of hip airplane is to strengthen the hip stabilizing muscles (as well as ankle through calf) and hamstring and help you control them better (also helps if you have lacking core and thoracic mobility if you include the rotation to it). Doing uchimata to finish almost looks like doing the hip airplane to begin with.
@Travis Stevens what bands do you recommend? What do you think about the gi grip handles for uchikomi bands? Mount the bands at waist height?
Can you tell which height is the ideal to put-setup the elastic bands? Thanks for the great videos!
This is SO awesome. 26 years ago when I did judo, I used to always drop my head before the initial pull. I thought this was what everyone did. I practiced that way for YEARS. I had a VHS tape with one of my matches, and I noticed my head went down. It looked funny, but I didn't know how to fix it, or whether I needed to fix it.
Fast-forward to today. I'm too heavy to put all my weight on my son (we do BJJ) during quarantine, so instead we started doing judo. We were practicing uchikomi while my daughter was taking video, and I noticed that I'm still dropping my head. Coach Travis, it looks like you're lowering your level with your knees, and your head is up. I'm guessing you probably get better thrust, a better element of surprise, and greater speed. Is there anything else I left out? I think you answered my 26-year-old question!
Thanks so much!
Edit: I figured at least some of it. I was bending at the waist, not at the knee. It's just a slight bend of the knees, right? I'm guessing it also helps with getting closer to your opponent?
You are right you should be keeping your head up. But I do that to make sure I can see my opponent. If I'm looking at his feet I'm more likely to lose the gripping battle.
And yes a slight knee bend is key!
@@TravisStevensgrappling Thanks so much, Coach Travis!
I did lots of repetitions of the first exercise today with the uchikomi band tied to a tree. My son and I later practiced the same movement with my head held up, and...behold, I could see my the grips at the same time! :)
My lower back was feeling the burn, and I'm probably going to begin feeling it even more tomorrow. It's a good first step towards learning to do it correctly.
Thanks again.
Travis' Best videos...please bring back ilias on your videos
Travis , awesome video, can you also use these excercise evolutions to help get lower in your rotations for turn throws? As a bit of a taller dude and still new to training, i find myself above ukes belt alot in my turns. Also do you have any reccomendations as far as the mount height of the ring used to hold the band?
I'm 6'5", and I have the same issue regarding being above uke's belt at times.
Hi! this was very helpful , but how many times do you recommend doing this? like reps.
Thank you for these videos Sensei Travis, they are very helpful. I have recently obtained your Takedown Blueprint set as a BJJ player my stand up has always been the area that I feel needs the most work. Apart from grip fighting what takedown (s) would you suggest focusing initial study on? I wanted to pick one or two high % throws and study and drill them as much as possible. Thank you for your time.
It really does depend on what type of game you want to play on bottom. But you could start with a foot sweep and a Taio.
@@TravisStevensgrappling Thank you! I will get started studying and making notes. I will also use your solo drills in the interim to work the movement patterns. Then start drilling once the gyms start to reopen.
Nice
Hi, amazing videos! Do you aim to increase the resistance with uchi komi bands?
No not at all. I keep it the same at all times. Its a tool not the end all be all.
Thank you for showing these! The band you linked to is not available at the moment (probably because everybody rushed to buy it after seeing this video!). What is the length of the bands you would recommend?
I'll have to take another look to see if I can find one. I'm working with FUJI right now to develop one just for grapplers!
Try this exercises with the Dopamineo Bands and you’ll feel the difference 💪
Amazing videos even for bjj guys
What are some drills/exercises you do to keep your shoulders and hips mobile and agile? I lift a lot as part of my routine and feel that I my my hips/shoulders get tight and have to warm up a lot. Even then my hips seem slow and tight when doing sweeps or ne waza. Thanks again for another awesome video!
You should check out my DVD Movement For Grappling. It goes over all that mobility stuff.
@@TravisStevensgrappling in the cart now.
Thanks!
Where can we buy all this material so we can train from our garage?
Great stuff!!Which bands do you recommend?
I would recommend a 20-30lb band. You can pick them up at just about any sporting goods place but here is one I found online that I like. I would just cut it down the middle and tie a knot on the end. amzn.to/2VGJ8B9
Thanks champ.....do you prefer the anchor above waist level or ground level..
Right at the belly button level is best for me anyways
Do you recommend those bands with fake gi grips on the end or is it not necessary?
Can we see a sneak preview of your new mastering seoi nage video... I’m thinking of getting it from judo fanatics
Yeah. I'll release a technique from it for you! Later on this week.
Travis Stevens brilliant thanks
bands cleared my elbow and snapped on my ribs for technique 2, hurt bad lol
Which level of resistance band should we aim for?
Nvm he answered this. If falling back go lighter.
❤
Harai goshi, which technique will develope it?
Stick to the Uchimata version in the video. Harai and Uchimata practice a lot of the same principles.
Gee, I wish the camera guy for Mastering Osoto Gari was half as good as the one you are using here.
Thank you Travis. How do you suggest to train o uchi gari ? Perhaps giving the back to the bands ?
it's not something I would focus on while using a band. I would just practice body positioning and movement.
Where can we get uchikomi bands?
I found some on Amazon that I would get. Here is a link: amzn.to/2VGJ8B9 I would just cut them in half and tie them at the end like I did. They're cheap and will last a long time.
Here is another band I would get and cut to have two ends. amzn.to/2S9xeyU
That suggested band is not available. Next suggestion?
Give me a bit I’ll find another one and leave it in the comment
Here is another band I would get and cut amzn.to/2S9xeyU
If I was getting a band I would get the red one as 10-30 pounds is enough for me to get a great workout in.
Ronda Rousey did such a superb job at showing MMA what these kind of techniques for the ladies thankz for sharing judo is beautiful 🙏💗
Glad you enjoyed it Toa!
