Peggy Sue with a George Formby twist, cool.
Nice, I've always preferred John (the songs, not him as a person), but I do love Temporary Secretary!
You have a DX7 tattoo. I hope you don't have a 'I love an 80s gated snare' secreted somewhere?
Hey Justin, I don't know if you take requests but after watching the video on Crawlers (who are a new favourite for me now, thank you) I was wondering if you would analyse some more lesser known bands such as Fangclub or Mother's Cake. They're both incredible bands with great song writing and I feel they deserve more attention. Cheers, Jon
Justin I once met you before a Darkness gig and you shook my hand. Strongest grip ever. Did that happen because of your guitar playing or did you get your grip super strong to maximize your skills? What came first the grip or the shred?
It's hard to wrap your head around what a living legend Paul McCartney is and I feel the world sometimes just takes him for granted.
100% agree, amazing how many people seem to be amazed by him on Get Back!
That is very true.. People don`t appreciate what an incredible legend he really is.. It may be because Paul is so down to earth as a person..
@@yellyman5483 I totally disagree.
People endlessly talk about him and how amazingly talented he is. And it’s all true, of course - he is a very special talent.
As for being down-to-Earth…Seems to me Paul has a very, very high opinion of himself. I’m not saying he shouldn’t, and I totally understand that when people tell you you’re a genius for sixty years straight it’s going to have an effect on you, but still…he definitely thinks he’s the shit, and he gets off on the adulation.
It must be so weird to be him....to BE Paul McCartney. You're less a human than an archetype.
Just imagine living in a world you had a HUGE hand in creating. Being a person who's music literally shaped and formed the mental and physical construct of the very world you exist within.
He's had such an astonishingly prolific life. I've always respected his love of music. He could have quit AGES ago, but never did....and indeed just kept trying new things. Dabbling in whatever feels fun to try out.
He's a global treasure for sure. And it's sad to realize he almost certainly won't be around that much longer. I mean, humans only live so long....and his time is running short. It sucks, but yeah.... :/
oh come on folks. he‘s just a human who is simply chosen by you to stand on a pedestal being your hero. from a more realistic point of view little paul got influenced by his musical environment at an early stage, had some real bad experience when his mother has died very early, delved into his own world and got really good in what he‘s been doing because he was doing it at the right time with the right people for already a fair amount of time. and because it’s popular music which he was very good at you know him through media. he‘s just human because he‘s human
“When Winter Comes” on McCartney III is really lovely too.
People too easily discount those early Beatle songs because they seem simplistic. But you have to realize the surprises in those songs. Clever clever lads.
Justin whatever you do, don’t allow silly words in this comment section to sway how you respond and initially review anything, the majority of us love your honest opinions and the way you subtly and very cleverly deliver them. That is what makes these videos. I wouldn’t even consider those who take this seriously enough to say any of what may make you hesitate in future videos. Keep doing this because for fellow musicians and fans these videos can really make our day. Thanks again. Luke.
Justin is on my short list for verbal attacking
Well said!
I don't think he gives a shit.
Calico Skies is my favourite Sir Paul track. On the surface, simple love song loveliness, with all those layers underneath - odd rhythm changes with the lyrics here and there worked in the way only he can. Great stuff.
I agree that is a good one it goes under the radar. On the flaming pie album. ‘Songs we were singing’ is another good one from that album.
If you’ve not seen it McCartney 3, 2, 1 on Disney + is fantastic. Well worth a watch
3,2,1 McCartney with Rick Rubin one of the best insights into Paul's work in a long time.
My absalute number one macca song is "Arrow through me" a funky chilled yacht rock masterpieces, great chord progression great vocals and when those horns hit oh its just golden.
I would love to listen to a singer-songwriter type of album made by Justin.
ditto
Uncle Albert is a fine example of the many multi section songs that Sir Paul has produced. I also love "Back seat of my car" and more recently "Get Enough" really hits the spot
Get Enough is gorgeous!
John used to be my favourite Beatle. The reasons were obvious: he used to think outside of the box while Paul used everything inside the box to create something new.
When the boys disbanded amd I listened to John's solo material, I still loved his stuff, but it was obvious that without Paul and George Martin, John was more pedestrian than groundbreaking.
Paul kept writing amazing songs through so many years.
Perfect chord progressions, unbelievable vocal performances, great human being.
John and Paul were my foster dads in my troubled childhood.
I'm very glad you're a Beatle guy. You're awesome.
Wish we'd have gotten to see John's music progress through the years like the other fellas. In my opinion none of them passed The Beatles on their own, that combination was just one of a kind. I'm going to be 35 this year just for reference, the stuff is timeless!
Great synopsis, totally agree. 😊
Plastic Ono,
(Lennon’s 1st solo record)
was / is amazing... unreal....excellent!!!
I'd not go so far calling Lennon a pedestrian, but I see where you're aiming at. In my point of view Macca was and is from another planet when it comes to work-ethic and living a lufe being a professional musician in general. (especially after Epstein were no more). Lennon probably, especially when joining forces with Yoko Ono, visioned himself as more bohemian type of artist, where Macca's more of the enterpreneuer type.
Obviously we can only guess what would have Lennon done in 80s and 90s if he wasnt brutally murdered. If what I've read is true, he was just about to return from his 5 year hiatus being a full-time family man when those unfortunate chain of events took place.
I hate to say...I agree... love John, but he is more simplistic as you say in the same way Cobain was no Bowie when it came to Chord use.
Took me until I became a die hard Beatles fan recently and began learning some of their songs on guitar that I realized some of my favorite riffs/guitar parts were written by Paul, and not John or George. Paperback Writer, Taxman solo, Drive my car main riff/solo, ticket to ride guitar fills, list goes on and on.
Sometimes I forget that Paul started on guitar years before switching to bass, he’s a very good guitar player.
I had Ram downloaded on Spotify when I holidayed in the Maldives, so I guess you can say it’s my desert island record. Played Ram on on my uke the entire stay.
It’s such a great album :)
I will defend 'Give My Regards To Broad Street' to my dying breath. The bass on that version of 'Silly Love Songs' slaps.
Agreed!
I love ' Junk', 'Martha my dear'... and there's a clip of Paul jamming on Helter Skelter on acoustic, it's killer... his rhythmic playing is phenomenal.. Paul doesn't get enough credit for his acoustic guitar playing, he's better than most acoustic players I've heard, other than James Taylor
Martha My Dear 🙌 yeessss mate
Wings holds such a tender place in my heart. Some of those songs will wring tears right out of me; such simple perfection in so many ways. My parents had the soundtrack album for Live and Let Die (we adore Bond in all his permutations) and the original completely eclipses the GnR version, in my opinion. The artwork on that album was also delightful...on the subject of fine artwork; *great* shirt.
Nice to see Temporary Secretary getting some appreciation. It's not for everyone, but it's a brilliant oddity. I absolutely agree that No More Lonely Nights is one of his finest ballads. Like you, I do feel somewhat bemused when people cite Chaos and Creation as some kind of resurgence. I think it's a very good album, but it's too variable to be a stone-cold classic. You're right though: Jenny Wren is a highlight. Both Live and Let Die and Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey are masterpieces, albeit slightly flawed ones. But it's those flaws that make them wonderful, so there's that, I suppose. Nice selection!
Paul is GOD, no one in the history of music has written more beautiful melodies, he is crazily underrated as a bass player and vocalist, duets with Stevie Wonder Michael Jackson and George Michael show really truelly how good of a singer be is..... Great video man.
Great choices, but man I swear temporary secretary is cursed.
Catchy asf though
It's pure insanity.
look who's here
How so?
Your channel is just a constant stream of treats, Justin. Absolutely loved this - the song choices, the setting, the quips, the lot. Big fan.
I once went to see Grandmaster Flash do an DJ set, he opened with Wings ‘Somebody’s Knocking at the Door’ - not a remix or a hip hop version, just the normal 7” 😬😆
The songs name is Let ‘em in
I knew Paul Mccartney before I knew he was a Beatle. Been listening to him from probably 3 or 4 yrs old (thanks to my dad). A friend I played in a band with and wrote tunes with used to say I'm hardwired Paul Mccartney. As a fan of The Darkness and Paul Mccartney I loved this. Great choices 👌. It's a big catalogue to choose from.
McCartney 2 and Chaos and Creation in the backyard are two fantastic albums, and just purchased them on record. Amazing musician .. The British version of Prince I say!
Justin: "there's not a lot of really sexy stuff"
Andy: "the British prince!"
🤔
As a nine-year-old I became mesmerized with the cover to the album Wings Greatest that my uncle always had out by his turntable.. Once I listened to it, there was no turning back. His melodies and song structures are incomparable. It was only a couple years later when I backtracked and discovered The Beatles (I was 11 with no social media…lol). His breath of work is so wide ranging and magnificent, his melodies infectious. Brilliant!
Paul’s double tracked lead vocals on Penny Lane and Live and Let Die are the quintessential “McCartney Pop Vocal Sound”. Almost deifies description…❤️
It took me years to enjoy McCartney and indeed the beetles....i was Led zep, sabbath, rush priest etc. But when i eventually listened to the white album (after i heard live and let Die) my brain opened up into a new world...I suddenly realised that they where and he was THAT good.
There are so many great songs to choose from Sir Paul, you could do a top 30 list quite easily.
'Rode All Night' and 'On the Way' are 2 of my favourites. Absolutely love the sound of the guitar for On the Way. Bad ass tone played very loud. Incredible stuff.
wow! all the songs you picked are my favorites, too. i didn't think anyone else thought that "no more lonely nights" was as great a song as i think it is.
This is fast becoming my favourite RUclips channel!
I listened to Egypt Station a great deal as I spent a few months in Spain cycling the same cost over and over and listening through my headphones. It is deceptively deep and melancholic. He's a man that knows he isn't long for the world. He doesn't face his mortality head-on in the album but it is clear he understands he is reaching that station on his journey.
I couldn’t pick five Macca songs, as I’d stress over the ones I left out… his songwriting is that good.
Dude, same.
Your impersonation of George Formby doing an impersonation of Buddy Holly is flippin' brilliant.
Love McCartney and his solo work!
I was there at the 02 arena in 2015 for the first ever Temporary Secretary live performance. When those opening bars played out...wow! I felt the shock and huge surprise from the fellow hardcore Macca fans in the audiance. Utterly fantastic!
But Chaos & Creation a "forgettable album"? Whaaat? This is sacriledge surely! 😂
I just found this jewel of a channel...Yeeees! Alright, my whole weekend is booked, I have a lot to catch up! Thank you Justin!
Jenny Wren is a great tune! I think Paul Mcartneys strongest suit is writing musically advanced or unusual harmonies and melodies that sound completely natural and comfortable even to people with no musical background.
Hey Justin! So happy you made a playlist and shout-out for the genius of Sir Paul. I will discuss/argue with anyone about how amazing and varied his post Beatles outpost was and remains. Good choices too!
I love your intro Justin - the diminished chord at the end promises mystery and intrigue!
I love the faces version of ‘maybe I’m amazed’..Ronnie Lane sings the first bit and then you get Rod in his pomp..definitely amazing..check out the live version on RUclips.
Yes, Yes and Yes 👍
Mine are:
-Take It Away
-Ballroom Dancing
-Monkberry Moon Delight
-Arrow Through Me
-Goodnight Tonight
Great list, especially arrow through me what a jam.
Ballroom Dancing very nice song I liked to sing it in childhood and I was later very surprised it was not popular at all.
No More Lonely Nights is simply amazing. Great singing, incredible lyrics! Didn't know David Gilmour done the solo! Thanks for this one! :)
Also yes to ‘No More Lonely Nights’ one of his most underrated
Great video Justin. Loving the channel. Keep it up, you wonderful person.
This man needs complete freedom to review annything he wants. This man is a genius and a breath of fresh air on this platform. Thanks for the great videos.
You’re getting so productive on this channel, thanks for all the company, I hope to be able to attend a date in Ireland… 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻
Always loved Paul, seen him twice come on stage as a surprise at other artists’ gigs, and both times I lost my shit 😂 will check out the playlist for sure as you’ve mentioned a few songs I’m not familiar with. Keep it up Jus 👌❤️
I’ve never seen Paul McCartney come on stage, and I’m quite happy for that to continue. I hope he just sticks to playing and singing on stage.
Love how much content you are putting out man! Good stuff. Can't wait to see The Darkness in Seattle in March
Very good list Justin, you hit the nail on the head on No More Lonely Nights. I’ve always felt that way too, and on my own personal mixtapes I faded it out as soon as the solo starts at the end.
Duuuuude I LOVE Temporary Secretary! Everyone I show it to think I’m nuts but it’s so rad and innovative to me.
I thought the major
was a lady
suffer-a-jette JET
DO DO DO DO DO DO DO DO DO
Glad you put in temporary secretary, he talked about this period on Adam Buxtons podcast, love that album and you gotta agree that "Check my machine" is like a precursor to some Gorillaz sounds
Great video! It's been a while since I listened to post-Beatles McCartney. You've inspired a deep dive. Thank you good sir, keep up the stellar work!
My favourite song of alltime is "the long and winding road". It plays in my head the most out of any song that has. And it hits me in the chest every time. Just a brilliant song.
Maybe it also reminds me of my dad,
After get back documentary came out, I loved it even more.
Great episode!
Great video, I'm a big Macca fan and the more I watch JHRA, the more I'm finding a new found appreciation for the man with a satorial tendency for catsuits.
Nice list! My favorite solo McCartney/Wings songs are Let Me Roll It, Wanderlust, Calico Skies, Man We Was Lonely and Band on the Run.
Wanderlust ♥️♥️♥️♥️
Oh my goodness. I'm so happy you selected 'no more lonely nights'. I too have a great fondness for the track.
Hooray.
Yep, I concur. Sadly I think people will only wake up to how much of a massive genius Paul was when he’s gone (and that’s taking into account people already saying he’s a genius…but he’s a bigger genius than they think. Make sense? Good.)
Great video!! I wish you'd do a similar video about John's solo stuff
I love Paul McCartney. Mostly his Beatles stuff tbh, but some excellent solo stuff too, and as a bassist he's one of my idols. Always good to see your thoughts Justin 👍
Really love these videos cheers dude
I've not heard Temporary Secretary before, sounds like a mashup of the Beatles and the Knight Rider theme. Quirky and cool, I like it :)
Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey is a wonderfully eccentric song. Great choice!
Temporary secretary is a banger. Heard somewhere that the arrpegiated line is actually a bassline just sped up
It's definitely a synth, Paul messing around with early synth settings
Great picks. I love "coming up". It might be my favourite. Thanks Justin.
100% agree that the Wings version of Live and let die is the best. 👍
Staggering that you bring up "no More Lonely Nights" - no one ever gives it any love. That opening line "I could wait another day", and the sad sounding bridge about something "Until you tell me so" are breath taking. And I actually like the outro solo - mainly because Paul is so clever to go up a half step for it.
I've wanted to watch your show for awhile now. Then just jumped in when you decided to talk about Paul McCartney. I like it.
I have so many favorites. Currently, “With a Little Luck” is on heavy rotation. It takes me back to a simpler time in my life the 1970s. I love the fact he’s your favorite Beatle. It’s much hipper and expected for musicians to say they prefer John. You can’t lose with either choice of course, but I lean Paul myself. I started with Wings and worked backwards into his catalogue. Come to think of it, I can see a how you connect with Uncle Albert Admiral Halsey. Paul uses his voice in ways that reminds me of the Darkness. Cheers man. I hope to see you in Chicago soon once this covid shit show is over.
Is it not pretty crazy to think that we lived in the time of the Beatles? Or even the time when some of the Beatles are still alive? The Beatles music is NEVER going away, hundreds of years from now perhaps they'll even talk about this period as Beatleaen times like Shakespearean times. I can see them still being held in such high regard as Mozart or Da Vinci are now.
Another great video. I’m reading the ‘massive’ Paul McCartney lyrics book I got for Christmas (highly recommended) and the stories behind some of the songs are amazing. A great read. Any chance you could do a playlist of his best Beatles tracks?
Omg somebody that shares my opinion on chaos and creation and my Favorite Paul McCartney song ever NMLN ❤️❤️❤️ also love your picks, great content I subscribed
Good choices Justin - even one in there I don't think I've heard! cheers.
This has easily become my favorite RUclips channel
Thank you for this, I already knew most these tracks but no more lonely nights was a great addition to my likes songs list!!
Totally agree RE: Jenny Wren It was one of those songs that started me reappreciating McCartney just in time for a decade of great music!
Thank you Justin, everybody loves Sir Paul and yes, he's the best Beatle, period! ❤️
No More Lonely Nights - just about as good as it gets. I even love the huge solo - but I take your point JH! 👍🏻👍🏻🤘🏻
Mr. Hawkins sir...thank you for love is only a feeling.that song stuck in my mind and guides me for years.brilliant song.rock on sir.
yahhhhhh ... love PM's stuff ..... aside "the feeling" miss you * ) nice one Justin .
2 great songs from Macca for me are Some people never know and Tomorrow both from Wings Wild Life.
Underrated album. Side 1 is pure filler but side 2 is great
@@NNnn-zc2bm the only filler is Mumbo and bip bop. Side 1 also has Love is Strange and Wild Life which are both great
Paul mccartney is undoubtedly the greatest songwriter of all time. He's almost otherworldly with his ability to write instantly brilliant and recognisable songs. Even his bass playing is insane. I can't adequately verbalise how incredible he is.
You're absolutely right!
Justin Hawkins rides again, again? Well, I'm bloody glad he does - informative, articulate and reasoned content with a whiff of humour is verrrrrrrrrrry hard to find these days. Ride again and ride on Sir, ride hard and unabashed. ❤️🏍️🎸
Interesting selections. I have fond memories of all of them. Ram is one of my all time favorite albums. I really like that jacket!
Love the "Odes to Influences" videos. Mine(open to revision daily):
1. Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey
2. Band on the Run
3. Junior's Farm
4. Helen Wheels
5. Let Me Roll It
Helen Wheels...
Back is the day, John and Paul used to get off trying to see how close they could get to writing one chord songs.
I think 'Helen" was a, "look at what I've done, John", song.
Let me roll it is great, same with band on the run and live and let die. I love how the latter two change tempo and tack, quite unconventional songs. The main riff in let me roll it is great, played by him I believe.
Really enjoyed your insight and point of view ..all good stuff..
Live and Let Die... both versions are great actually, each in its own way... they're both awesome. I love them both equally, understanding their differences.
As soon as you said No More Lonely Nights I bought into this video and your channel. Brilliant track and I agree - shame about the solo. Possibly his best ever composition.
Great list! For me Maybe I’m Amazed was an absolute pinnacle for Paul. That song has it all.
7:37 Same way I feel about the original version of The Man Who Sold the World. The Nirvana version is a great example of the ideal straightforward cover, but it’s a song that’s written to have a psychedelic madness. The original goes hand in hand with another track called “All the Madmen”, which I don’t think Nirvana would have covered.
Great video, but regarding "No More Lonely Nights", I've felt that that the Gilmour guitar solo to be the highlight, if not the climax the song! A great musical collaboration :-)
I'm glad you chose Temporary Secretary. It's one of my favourites too. I loved it as soon as I heard it because it was so different.
Love the channel! Would love to hear your thoughts on The Kinks
Great selection Justin and you are 100% correct about Live and Let Die. You are right about guitar solos also. Serve the song. Ringo and George did that brilliantly hundreds of times.
Great list! Paul’s always been my favorite Beatle as well. I will push back and say Chaos and Creation, if anything, is a bit underrated as a whole. Thought Nigel Godrich was a good fit, and was able to slide Paul back into a more "Beatle-esque" sound. Agree with you full heartedly about Paul’s "Live and Let Die" being the definitive version. Suggesting otherwise is insane, but when have critics ever been right about solo Part McCartney? Some of my favorites are "Nineteen Hundred Eighty Five," "Let Me Roll It," and the ever funky "Arrow Through Me." Great songs from a true genius of song craft. Cheers!
Yes. 1985 is absolutely incredible.
Enjoyed that, cheers 👍
Weird, i just heard temporary secretary for the first time this morning and listened to almost all of these songs actually.
I really love your videos.
Good picks Justin, they're pretty much my favourite of Paul's, particularly Jenny Wren
