    I'm convinced Seiko intentionally refuses to put movements into their watches which match the quality of their designs. And you know what? It's a brilliant strategy.
    The low end movements with good design and finishing are perfect for a first watch, and they've really got that market well secured. Have a roughly $500 budget for a first watch? Look no further than any of the zillion Seikos at that price point.
    Then later when you start venturing into the 4 figure price range, guess what, Seiko is back! Now with the same low end movements, but spending the entire rest of the budget for unique designs and better finishing that rival vastly more expensive watches without spending money on silly things like accuracy. You don't care about movement tech right? You just want a cooler watch. Seiko has you covered. You are here now with this save the ocean skin diver.
    Ok, then you start inevitably caring about movement tech and you grow apart from your good friend Seiko. Those are now "starter watches" you say. You're more sophisticated and talk about things like chronometer certifications and swan neck regulators with a completely straight face and don't even think you sound like a snob. You tell yourself your design tastes have also elevated past Seiko. You lust after 5 figure watches. It's ok. Seiko isn't mad. Not even disappointed. It's just there, waiting for you to realize...
    Wait what's that? Seiko actually does have high end movements that have a letter that's not R in them? This pleases your new snobbery greatly. "I'm not a Seiko fan. No no, I'm a fan of high horology. I just didn't know that Seiko made high end movements", you tell yourself. But alas, this too wanes, and so you sell your Marine Master and have a final chuckle about how it came with cuff links. As if. Now you're on the wait-list for a Rolex and after 6 months you start asking yourself if you even actually want the Rolex or if you just want the idea of it. That inner watch nerd comes knocking again, but it's too late, Seiko can't answer the call.
    Wait... Who's that? Grand... Seiko? Oh, gosh, umm yeah you're right, it _is_ a better finished watch with a better movement to boot at half the price. Well this is awkward. I hope my Rolex AD doesn't get too mad when I show up in my new snowflake to cancel my order.
    Also, King Seiko exists for those who really want to lean into maximum design without spending any money on movement. Oh but wait they have limited editions of _those_ with high end movements too. You cannot escape Seiko. You can only resist, and we all have limited willpower.

      Will use your comment for content creation. Yes I fully agree with you how there is a mismatch between watch and movement used. I own a new King Seiko Kikkoumon dial and I was disappointed that it did not use a 6L movement.

      That is a nice story to tell yourself for buying, what in the end is, just a piece of jewellery. Because a watch that doesn't keep time accurately, is a useless jewellery that instead of an engineering little wonder which turns kinetic energy to precise timekeeping it just carriss a junk load of metal parts inside, that are completely useless. Having a watch that lose thirty seconds up to one minute a day is just garbage, no matter how beautiful it is. It is really a shame and quite disgraceful and disrespectful to create watches that can't keep time precisely. It makes you realise that the Swiss are centuries ahead because they make WATCHES and NOT JEWELLERY

      And, as stated in this video, there are no QC issues on this model.

    I have three 62mas references in my collection. The SPB143, SPB239 and the black SPB253, the case shape ad the color variants Seiko releases just makes me get one everytime. Thought about the SPB297 too but ended up picking up the MM200 SPB299. I don't have any complaints about QC since I get my Seiko from an AD and look for it personally before I pickup one plus QC has been good on the higher end Seikos these days. If you have mixed feelings about 6R, then just get it regulated after you buy. All my 6r Seikos run within -/+5 seconds a day and keeps time very well.

    I splurged for the SLA version of the 62MAS - slightly smaller case, fancier movement, fancier detailing, but from any distance greater than my eye to my wrist, pretty much indistinguishable from an SPB - and it's as close as I've ever come to thinking, "I could hang with this watch forever."

    • @tfergieman
      @tfergieman Год назад +2

      SLA017? I have one as well! It’s an AMAZING piece. My first “expensive” watch. There was so much hubbub about it being overpriced when it released. I think it’s actually a value proposition, when you compare it to it’s peers (with any level of provenance). If I had to choose only one watch for the rest of my life, the SLA would easily be it. My appreciation for it heightened after purchasing my first Rolex (new Explorer). Yes, the Rolex has a ton of charm, character, history etc., but the SLA is just on a whole different level IMO. Considering it was released in 2017, and now that the trend is toward smaller watches, it is the perfect size (39mm) that will stand the test of time. Enough babbling on…..Seiko is amazing!

    • @MeestroDavid
      @MeestroDavid Год назад +1

      @@tfergieman I went with the SLA043-I couldn't resist the color of the dial and especially the bright-blue seconds hand. I did, however, pick up the bracelet from the SLA017, which fits perfectly, is so simple to swap on and off, and made it even more versatile. 100% with you on the Rolex comparison, too-when I had the chance to get one at my local AD, I happened to be wearing the SLA. I compared the two and had a complete moment of clarity (so rare in this silly hobby) that the Rolex felt like a step down in terms of its design, history, durability, and degree of hands-on watchmaking the Grand-Seiko-built SLAs represent.

    • @tfergieman
      @tfergieman Год назад

      @@MeestroDavid 043 is great and that blue seconds hand has *almost* given me the push to pick one up multiple times! Great choice. Pick up an Uncle Seiko 19mm waffle strap, it provides the perfect balance of vintage appeal and modern materials and flex. It’s also not a lint magnet and not a mile long like the factory waffle. Also, what do you think about the SLA025 (or variations of it)? Been withholding for about 5 years…man I love that watch. I wish it had a bracelet option…

    • @MeestroDavid
      @MeestroDavid Год назад

      @@tfergieman The 025 is gorgeous but larger than I'm comfortable wearing. The under-40mm case of the 017/043 was a major selling point for me and, if I could change anything at all, I'd make it a little slimmer. Related, I tried on the SBP313 (and related) and it was by far the most comfortable Seiko I'd ever slipped on. I had to exercise a lot of self-control not buying that one, but I feel like it would always be an either/or decision to wear that or the SLA and it would always lose.

    I don’t love Seiko. I’ve tried. Honestly, I have. I’ve owned 6 or 7 over the last 20 years, all of them attractive and interesting enough for me to spend my hard-earned cash on, but nope, I flipped them all. Despite some great designs, like the 62mas and 6105 Willard, the brand just doesn’t speak to me. Seiko makes me feel…nothing…like the Tin Man. So yeah, I guess I have no heart. 😂

    Question, from someone new to Seiko but living their offerings: Do you need to use Seiko "fat" (2.5 mm diameter) springbars when you use other straps? (Also, thanks for reviewing a watch I'm trying *not* to buy! Lol.)

    • @YoureTerrific
      @YoureTerrific  Год назад +4

      You can use any thickness of spring bar, as long as it’s the right length.
      Perhaps the inverse of some other things?

      You can use any springbars of the correct width. I've got a watch with fat springbar holes (doesn't that sound dirty) that works just fine with normal springbars. They actually work better with pass through straps.
      That being said, the narrower tips hotdoggin' down the hallway does accelerate wear in the lug holes, though we're talking about a timeframe measured in years, decades even.

    • @Nightfury0695
      @Nightfury0695 Год назад +1

      You already got your answer but another thing to consider is the springbar tip width, the Seiko 2.5mm fat bars usually have 1.1mm tip opposed to a more common 0.9mm tip. So you may feel a little wiggle if you use 0.9mm but that is normal. Get 1.8mm springbars if you want to use leather straps or any other straps, more durable. For nato, just use the springbars that come with watch.

    Best Seiko watches are the ones $500 or less. Anything over is meh. My first mechanical watch the SKX173 will always be with me and I think it’s the perfect example of what Seiko does best. I’ve tried on a whole herd of Grand Seikos, limited editions…and none of them give me that weird warm fuzzy feeling of a luxury or exclusive watch. Again, Seiko is best at its mid to lower levels
