*Article 356* of the Indian Constitution is titled "Provisions in case of failure of constitutional machinery in States," commonly referred to as President's Rule. This article is part of the emergency provisions of the Indian Constitution and allows the President of India to assume direct control of a state's governance under certain circumstances.
Here are the key aspects of Article 356:
    **Invocation Conditions:**
    - Article 356 can be invoked when the President, on receipt of a report from the Governor of a state or otherwise, is convinced that a situation has arisen in which the government of the state cannot be carried on following the provisions of the Constitution.
    **Effects of President's Rule:**
    - Upon the imposition of President's Rule, the state government is temporarily dismissed, and the Governor, on behalf of the President, assumes the administration's responsibilities. The legislative assembly of the state may be dissolved or may remain in suspended animation.
    - The Parliament assumes the power to make laws on behalf of the state legislature.
    - The President governs the state through the Governor and can declare that the powers of the Legislature shall be exercisable by or under the authority of Parliament.
    **Duration:**
    - Initially, President's Rule is imposed for six months, but it can be extended with the approval of both the Lok Sabha (the lower house) and the Rajya Sabha (the upper house) of Parliament in six-month increments. However, it cannot exceed a total period of three years.
    **Judicial Review:**
    - SC has held that the invocation of Article 356 is subject to judicial review. The court can strike down the imposition of President's Rule if it deems the action to be mala fide or based on extraneous considerations.
    **Usage:**
    - Article 356 has been used in various instances by the central government when a state government is destabilized by internal conflicts, corruption, or other governance issues making the administration as per the Constitution untenable.
This article is sometimes criticized for its potential misuse in political scenarios, where the central government might use it to undermine state governments led by opposition parties. After several contentious applications of this article, the Supreme Court has established guidelines to prevent its arbitrary use.
