And this is proof you don't need two massive disposable CGI armies to have an epic fight. Make the fight relevant. Make the characters matter. Quality will triumph over quantity, every time.

Wow, first time I noticed the deathcount here:
Conan 6 (not counting Thorgrim), Subotai 10! Everybody was concentrating on the big guy while the little sneaky bastard killed the most

    • @vgnlda
      @vgnlda 9 лет назад +58

Exactly, the little archer won by a mile and wasn't even helped by spike traps and goddesses like Conan was. However Conan killed the bosses, so maybe he was awarded bonus points for that. Subotai even managed to save the princess at the end, though. ALL HAIL SUBOTAI, OUR NEW KING.

1:56 one of the best buildups to a battle i've ever seen in a movie, such a simple yet amazing shot of them coming over the hill and the music just makes it so epic. It's been one of my favourite movie moments ever since I was a kid, and it still is now. My jaw dropped when i first saw this scene, it really makes you feel like it all comes down to this last battle, especially right after his prayer to Crom, the scene just screams that shit's about to go down! :)

The ending of this scene is what the film's message is, THE RIDDLE OF STEEL: First he is told by his father to seek out the metals(iron) left by Crom, forge mighty swords and conquer the world, Trust no one. Then he is told by Doom that it is not the steel (Iron) but the strength in his body and the power over others that is the riddle of steel, which both are incorrect.
Finally in this scene, The riddle of steel is found, it is not the sword nor physical strength but MENTAL strength. WILL POWER and being absolutely relentlessly determined in a goal which you will see to the end. Conan's being revenge for his family and village. Now he just has to cut the head off the snake and be done with it. Such a great film!!

Really clever moves from Subotai and Conan .Went to the high ground , used the terrain and stones to hide their movements and attack unexpectedly , forced their enemies on tight spaces to make their horses a detriment and and their numbers meaningless and used longer weapons to deal with mounted enemies from a safe distance .

For me 6:12 Valeria's supernatural return was one of the best scenes.
You would think she's a savage woman, but at the end you see that for the acts that she did in her life she was rewarded by God and became "the immortal" in all of her glory and fame. That scene also brings "magic" in "sword and magic" world of Conan.

I don't give a damn about the scene where Conan punches the camel, satanic gobshites the whole lot of them. And this scene, from the prayer up until that mocking "BAAAAAHHHH!" and the blades rising up into the sky... Pure diamond.

The story is nothing special but well written, the sets are inspired, the acting is rarely competent but always spirited, and the direction provides the bravado to make it work.
But above all, this is a prime example of how the music makes a movie! If you listen to the soundtrack by itself, it is like something written by Wagner (with a little bit of Ravel thrown in there).
What bogged down the 2011 Conan movie more than anything was the generic score. It had no memorable themes, no pathos and none of the operatic qualities of Basil Poledouris's score. Without pathos, the violence in the movie just became ugly instead of epic. You walked out of the theatre feeling soiled. You walked out of the 1981 Conan movie feeling like a man.
I hope they realize this and get a great composer for the new King Conan movie.

You are right, but as a history fanatic one Thing that fascinates me is that the setting of this story (although it takes place in a fantasy Age) is very close of how 'eurasia', the world between ukraine and kazakhstan, must have looked in the migration period and the time of the eastern goths and huns. They definetly used real history as an inspiration

What to say about it???...The MUSIC? The PICTURE? The REALISTIC ACTION (without the modern "ouaou" FXs)?... The SIMPLE & FEW lines of the BRUTAL characters? The CASTING?...

Arnold should do a "Conan The King" movie, with Subotai, The Wizard and the black woman from Conan the Destroyer

6:13 One of the most powerful scenes in this masterpiece. In her prayer, she (Valeria, Conan's love) asked to return from her death to fight by his side: "All the gods, they cannot sever us. If I were dead and you were still fighting for life, I'd come back from the darkness. Back from the pit of hell to fight at your side." Crom granted it. ruclips.net/video/gko_q6rrqOo/видео.html

You'd think the leader of a powerful cult that can kidnap a kings daughter could find more muscle than those few men. The king could have just sent his army to kill Doom instead of a hired assassin.

He has a greater army but they can't be assembled with ease . Which is logical , at that time the normal garrison for a strong hold would be between 50 and 100 guard . Thinking that " only " about 30 are mounted is reasonable . The challenge here was caught them with a quick mounted raid before they reach king osric , not assemble a powerful but slow army which they just can run off .
