And this is proof you don't need two massive disposable CGI armies to have an epic fight. Make the fight relevant. Make the characters matter. Quality will triumph over quantity, every time.
Wow, first time I noticed the deathcount here: Conan 6 (not counting Thorgrim), Subotai 10! Everybody was concentrating on the big guy while the little sneaky bastard killed the most
Exactly, the little archer won by a mile and wasn't even helped by spike traps and goddesses like Conan was. However Conan killed the bosses, so maybe he was awarded bonus points for that. Subotai even managed to save the princess at the end, though. ALL HAIL SUBOTAI, OUR NEW KING.
***** That's how you do it in D&D:Big guy agro and sneaky guy deal the pain. And the wizard drop...or cast a spell onceor...whatev. (yes i know, i know)
Crom, I have never prayed to you before. I have no tongue for it. No one, not even you, will remember if we were good men or bad. Why we fought, and why we died. All that matters is that today, two stood against many. Valor pleases you, so grant me this one request. Grant me revenge! And if you do not listen, the HELL with you!
Grant me revenge! And if you do not listen, the HELL with you! loved this dialogue. he is a real man and won't even care if gods don't help him. but he will fight.
1:56 one of the best buildups to a battle i've ever seen in a movie, such a simple yet amazing shot of them coming over the hill and the music just makes it so epic. It's been one of my favourite movie moments ever since I was a kid, and it still is now. My jaw dropped when i first saw this scene, it really makes you feel like it all comes down to this last battle, especially right after his prayer to Crom, the scene just screams that shit's about to go down! :)
such a tremendous film back when films didn't have hidden agendas. Films these days, the magic's gone. Oh and that bloody glorious music is beyond exceptional
The ending of this scene is what the film's message is, THE RIDDLE OF STEEL: First he is told by his father to seek out the metals(iron) left by Crom, forge mighty swords and conquer the world, Trust no one. Then he is told by Doom that it is not the steel (Iron) but the strength in his body and the power over others that is the riddle of steel, which both are incorrect. Finally in this scene, The riddle of steel is found, it is not the sword nor physical strength but MENTAL strength. WILL POWER and being absolutely relentlessly determined in a goal which you will see to the end. Conan's being revenge for his family and village. Now he just has to cut the head off the snake and be done with it. Such a great film!!
james rabbit This story was never meant to be like a real Conan story, Milius even admitted this himself! He merely used the Conan universe as an INSPIRATION to create a dramatic plot.
james rabbit what? what do you mean story of this movie makes no Sense??? Dude look at Middle East fundamentalist beliver Isis terorirst killing people to go haven to get 72 virgins. For me this movie shows how disgusting is all religions are.. religions are made by guy like Dooms to control stupid non educated people !!!
Really clever moves from Subotai and Conan .Went to the high ground , used the terrain and stones to hide their movements and attack unexpectedly , forced their enemies on tight spaces to make their horses a detriment and and their numbers meaningless and used longer weapons to deal with mounted enemies from a safe distance .
All time favourite sword and sorcery movie, the fights are brutal, score sets a storm coursing through your blood, scenery and sets are awesome, dialogue is great, james Earl is class as always, it's a powerful performance as Thulsa Doom, the wardrobes are sensational, the armour is so well done, and the chronicler is a legend! "I did it!!! With my spear!!! Eeeaaaauuhh!!!"
@sanjay puranik Thats why Conan used his wit and prepared many traps. After that he prayed to Crom, even though he had nk tounge for it, to grant him one request; to grant him revenge! And if he wasnt listening, then Crom could go to hell!
i dont know if its intentional. but the way conans father spoke to conan about trusting the steel in the beginning. its really symbolic that conan cuts that sword in half, like the sword betrayed the rider of doom on purpose.
For me 6:12 Valeria's supernatural return was one of the best scenes. You would think she's a savage woman, but at the end you see that for the acts that she did in her life she was rewarded by God and became "the immortal" in all of her glory and fame. That scene also brings "magic" in "sword and magic" world of Conan.
greatest battle speech of all time. Short and sweet, but incredibly powerfull and to the point: "open your eyes and see how these 2 puny humans defy death and if it pleases you help us"

lol i dont know how many times i have seen this but just now noticed that at 4:00 Subotai is out of arrows and bluffs two horsemen to fall in order to avoid non existing arrow... this movie is really an art piece, Peter Jackson should have learned from this...
the sword of rexor was his father's sword and the moment he broke it and kill rexor he honored the memory of his father by swing it over his head, also metaphore to how conan supress his father sword and achive his vengence and finish tulsa doom by his father sword and thrown the sword away after his gaoal achive. GREAT SCENE
Nice catch. Also, the stance and moves he used while defeating Rexor were the ones he learned at the gladiator academy. He earned back his birthright by becoming stronger and learning skills to defeat the people who stole it from him. It's a very symbolic scene on so many levels.
His valkyrya girlfriend saving Arnie´s butt The badass pray to Crom The understanding of the riddle of the steel These 3 strong scenes in about 9 minutes gave me chills
+MrPinbert They didn't want to pay him what he was owed. He said fuck it and bailed. In his place a wide range of dumb goofy characters came into company. One of the reason why the sequel sucked balls.
OTBWY Yeah the sequel would have improved quite a bit if they had Subotai again. I hope Arnold will now finally do King Conan before it's too late so this story can be wrapped up. I remember being disappointed that he never goes to safe Valeria in the sequel.
It's the sheer, pure and primordial element of this movie that will alway strike a nerve. Yes, they were not actors (barring J.E.J.)... Yes, the trip-wires meant that horses got seriously hurt... I don't give a damn about the scene where Conan punches the camel, satanic gobshites the whole lot of them. And this scene, from the prayer up until that mocking "BAAAAAHHHH!" and the blades rising up into the sky... Pure diamond.
That glorious battle soundtrack is my ringtone. Reminds me every day of the epicness and sheer power of this scene and the whole film for that matter. Masterful.
this film is an example of how important is a sound track for a movie it never gets dated even if the coreography and other effects does hollywood seems to have forgotten this
The story is nothing special but well written, the sets are inspired, the acting is rarely competent but always spirited, and the direction provides the bravado to make it work. But above all, this is a prime example of how the music makes a movie! If you listen to the soundtrack by itself, it is like something written by Wagner (with a little bit of Ravel thrown in there). What bogged down the 2011 Conan movie more than anything was the generic score. It had no memorable themes, no pathos and none of the operatic qualities of Basil Poledouris's score. Without pathos, the violence in the movie just became ugly instead of epic. You walked out of the theatre feeling soiled. You walked out of the 1981 Conan movie feeling like a man. I hope they realize this and get a great composer for the new King Conan movie.
You are right, but as a history fanatic one Thing that fascinates me is that the setting of this story (although it takes place in a fantasy Age) is very close of how 'eurasia', the world between ukraine and kazakhstan, must have looked in the migration period and the time of the eastern goths and huns. They definetly used real history as an inspiration
Yup. Theres a time about our history that is rarely discussed or mentioned. The Caucasian migrations both the early and later hunic&turkic ones. There is so much never dwelled on like the rise of the Khazars or the movement of tribes through Europe prior to the dark ages or before the Roman empire.
Crom! I have never prayed to you before. I have no tongue for it. No one, not even you, will remember if we were good men or bad. Why we fought, or why we died. 6:13 One of the most powerful scenes in this masterpiece. In her prayer, she (Valeria, Conan's love) asked to return from her death to fight by his side: "All the gods, they cannot sever us. If I were dead and you were still fighting for life, I'd come back from the darkness. Back from the pit of hell to fight at your side." Crom granted it. ruclips.net/video/gko_q6rrqOo/видео.html
Your description was wrong "Conan getting his revenge - Praying to CROM to appease him and getting his wish to avange his family - one of the best scenes of the movie" one the best scenes of ANY movie
You'd think the leader of a powerful cult that can kidnap a kings daughter could find more muscle than those few men. The king could have just sent his army to kill Doom instead of a hired assassin.
He has a greater army but they can't be assembled with ease . Which is logical , at that time the normal garrison for a strong hold would be between 50 and 100 guard . Thinking that " only " about 30 are mounted is reasonable . The challenge here was caught them with a quick mounted raid before they reach king osric , not assemble a powerful but slow army which they just can run off .
And this is proof you don't need two massive disposable CGI armies to have an epic fight. Make the fight relevant. Make the characters matter. Quality will triumph over quantity, every time.

The mix between imagery and music is so good. The final sword duel could perfectly be part of an opera.

The two goons who get it bad off Arnie (spike through chest and moustachio) always remind of Bruce Dickinson and Lemmy Killmister

How can a film be so manly and so poetic at the same time?
Never noticed Conan kneeling in the left corner at 4:28 before. Awesome scene!
The best soundtrack EVER !
Conan the Barbarian is such a great movie.
Arnold should do a "Conan The King" movie, with Subotai, The Wizard and the black woman from Conan the Destroyer
I am so excited for King Conan. I would have never thought it would come out and I really hope they do it justice.
Great stunt work! Fine movie all round. Wish Arnie had more through the 80s and 90s.
6:24 Valeria the Valkyrie.
One of the greatest movie due to the music
such a shame people will never make movies like this ever again. :/ one of few fantasy movies where i actually felt the magic
Kind of reminds me of Sergio Leone's work. Epic showdown.
Epicness at is finest
"Grant me reveeenge!"
Love the way he says that.
That axe he uses looks awesome, one look at it and you know you about to have a bad day.
Epic music, from a fellow-country man! I placed these tracks in... Skyrim, during battles!!!!

"Do you want to live forever?"
10 times better than LOTR trilogy in terms of badassery and epicness and with less money
"If you do not listen... then HELL with you!" Epic prayer!
Its a great scene but some part of me wish that James Earl Jones quote that line someday, with his voice it should be EPIC.
What I love is how the sword fight itself is actually a bit crap but the build-up, music and fucking Valkyrie appearing, everything just makes it totally epic
that battle-axe...... oO epic
