In Finland we typically say Karelia when we mean the Finnish Karelia and East Karelia (or these days we might say Republic of Karelia, but part of it is Finnish Karelia) when we mean the Karelia that is in Russia and has never been part of Finland.

      I assume it's because it's old news footage, and Swedish is our second official language. So the news would have been narrated in Finnish, and then subtitled in Swedish.

      Finns then knew Russian culture very well, whether "high" or "low". Many Finns still understood Russian and had access to Soviet propaganda -- but unlike Soviet citizens they were free to read between the lines. The Finns knew what was going on in the Soviet Union, including kindred Estonia.
