  • Four members of the Traditional Cowboy Arts Association unveil and discuss the museum-quality pieces they created for Cowboy Crossings. The annual event was held October 12-13 at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

    Come on people, don't you realize that a bit is a pain compliance device.

      No its actually not. Time and patience creates a willing partner no cruelty needed

      There is no horsemanship in the use of a bit. Most anyone can ride using a bit.

      sonseere10 I watch a guy who didn't understand the Spanish Spade pull my horse over because he applied too much pressure...LAST TIME I ever lent my horse to someone who doesn't understand the mechanics of the bit.... thank god my horse wasn't seriously hurt..

      squawcreekkid------I am relieved that your horse was not injured. That is the sort of thing that happens with many horse owners. They don't understand release of pressure on the reins when the horse gives the correct response. They may use the reins for balance at the expense of the horse.
      There is such a small margin of error when using a spade bit. Even in the hands of a skilled horseman, too much pressure may be applied in certain circumstances.

      Charlie-----A bit is a pain compliance device, no matter how soft one's hands are.

    Let's not glorify bits and spurs. They are not needed to properly communicate with the horse.
