As a photographer the A7iii is really the dream but something I love about the A7iii for video is the fact that it has proxy which allows you to record in 720p and 4K so that you’re able to edit a 720p file first, import the 4K when you’re done and then export in 4K! It’s a very nifty feature!
Oh wow, I did not even know about this feature. Of course, you can proxy any files from any camera in editing, but that seems cool that it removes that step entirely. I'll have to try it out, thanks for the comment!
jdinn32 it will have 2 files one in 720 and one on k4 from the same footage. So you can edit your video on 720 which will make it easy for your computer to process. Then you can import your 4K video to replace it. Now I’m just speculating about it because I haven’t done it, but I think that’s what she’s saying. But I wonder was the toll like will this make the camera overheated or eat memory fast?

Finally, my favorite lens is the lumix 12-35mm f2.8 on the GH5 and I pair the GH4 with the lumix 35-100mm f2.8.

Great video buddy! Thank you for sharing! Subscribed! I have a GH5 and love using it! Favorite feature probably is the IBIS for me! Wish it had a sensor like one found in the Black Magic Pocket 4k camera though, that combination would be better!
Wow! A really honest review....Thank you, that helped me to choose which camera... I’m really big on still shots and I choose the A7. Having said that and as much as I prefer the GH5 body I just can’t thank you enough.
Bro spot on with this review.. when you said you missing the flip out screen I was like, “yessss”. I can’t stand that screen on the Sony. Both awesome cameras.
Thanks, considering both cameras atm, as I have been shooting stills with an old 5D Classic and vids on my iPhone, but would really like to jump to a single camera for all. So torn! Thanks for the great vid!
Got to use both and the a7ii is just not there. People don’t understand how much IBIS on Panasonic is superior over sony’s. Autofocus and low light wins for sony, but thats not entirely needed when shooting videos. Specially with a f0.95 lens. The dual SD Cards cant even use UHSII and the price right now is cheaper on gh5
Connor...good info. I'm eyeing up the Sony A7 III myself....but the main reason is because of it's 120FPS (in 1080p). It's just something I want in my next camera....Be safe on that OneWheel..got that guy myself. If you love the OneWheel then you've gotten get the Skydio 2 for filming and riding. It's a great combo! Again, great info. in this video..thx!
Hey! The 120 on the A7III is nice. The GH5 also has that feature and I actually think the image quality in 1080 120p is better on the GH5. Love the onewheel! Been eyeing that drone for awhile. Would be a fun addition to the videos. Thanks for stopping by, glad you enjoyed!
When the GH5 first came out, I fell in love with it. Then the A73 came out and I fell in love with it. I've used both of them but have not purchased either. I plan to wait for the A74, but if I had to pick between the 2 (A73 vs GH5) I'd have to go with the A73 and the choice is simple to me. Full Sensor, Auto Focus, Footage Quality, and the much smaller body.
@@ConnorRickey Well, to start improved image stabilization. Brighter display with articulating screen & hopefully it will remain at the 2k price point while the A73 drops a few hundred. If the spec jump isn't big then I may still jump on the A73 just at a cheaper price point. To my understanding the A74 should be out sometime this year, fingers crossed...
@@jaymeez Would be awesome to get those features. 4K 60 would be amazing, too. We'll see if they release it this year with the pandemic going on. Fingers crossed!
@@ConnorRickey I knew I forgot about something (4k 60) Btw rumor has it they left out the articulating screen on the A73 due to it adding too much bulk to the body design. If the new A74 gets bulky them I'm almost for sure going with the A73 (or maybe even a GH-6) :)
jaymeez I could see that! Because the GH5 is definitely bulkier than the A7iii. But by so little. I’ll take some bulk in exchange! You should see how bulky my cinema rig is 😂
What lens are you using to record yourself at minute 3.30 - I don't like the way it renders the background. What lens are you using for the dog take at 4.31? Looks amazing! Also the lady at the bridge looks great at minute 4.40!
hey man i bought the GH5 but the body only. what lens would you suggest i purchase, what lens are you using in this video?? Great video btw you swayed my decision into buying!
Yup. You got my subscription. Great work! I do own a GH5 and besides all that pros u mentioned, i think the battery time would totally kills the A7iii.
Hi Conner, I'm glad I found your channel. Because you are also a mountain biker who makes movies. I am looking for a camera to make MTB edits. would you recommend here rather the GH% or the A7iii? I mean both have disadvantages in front of us, but just because of all the movement that is in a MTB edit, probably the GH5 would be better. What do you think?
Great vid; I've been spending the last few months reading/watching reviews comparing the 2 cameras. I'm looking mainly for video capabilities for leisurely filming and to practice editing (I work in post production), as well as filming stock footage. I'm leaning towards the GH5 at the moment.
Thank you for sharing! Awesome information. We are travelers and we were using iPhones for a while for our RUclips channel. We are looking to start to use a camera now for our travel videos. The touch screen is a big feature as you mention for us. I think gh5 has a big advantage with that.
I owned a GH4 and bought the GH5 a couple of years ago and then last year I sold the GH4 and that actually half covered the cost of a new G9. So I have a Video-Centric camera and a Photo-Centric camera. Being semi professional it is important to keep costs down and those cameras are extremely competitively priced plus they can share lenses and I added V-log to both so blending in B-Cam footage isn’t a problem! Low light isn’t really an issue with wide aperture prime lenses!
Great review! We are currently looking to upgrade our old HC-V770 camcorder and, with a budget of less than £1000, GH5 & Sony A64000 seem to be the main contenders. They are both around £850 (body + a few batteries and an accessory), while A73 is £1200, so a big price difference. The main use of the camera would be creating promo clips for a music business, band/vocalist performances at bars and other venues (often with poor lighting), maybe an occasional music video and also family/hobby cinematography. Ideally, it would be capable of doing better still images than a Huawei P30 Pro for Instagram shots and alike. Should I got for Lumix GH5 or Sony A64000 for the above? Perhaps something else in the same price range? Or save up for A73 or similar? Thanks
Thanks! That's a tricky question. Yes the GH5 won't have as good of low light, but with the Sigma 18-35mm 1.8 that's not a huge issue (but the metabones adapter costs $300). The GH5 will be superior in every other way. Better internal stabilization (A6400 footage will be shaky handheld unless you have a stabilized lens), slow motion is better quality on the GH5 (4K60), battery life will be better, and overall use is easier IMO. Photos will definitely be better than the P30 Pro even on the GH5. If you're able to save a little more for the A7 III, that could also be a good option. You'd get most of the features mentioned above plus better lowlight and photos. Feel free to check out the Kit link in the description of this video for more gear inspiration! Hope this helps.
Hey Connor ! Great video on all the information. If I am using the camera mainly for documentary work with settings in nature or even inside places. Would you recommend the GH5 over the Sony a7iii? Or is it better to have full frame for professional documentary projects/films !? Especially in 2020. Thank you
Sorry for my delayed response here! Well first off... settings in nature, then indoor places, are two very different settings. For nature/outdoors, GH5 all the way. The stabilizer (IBIS) is also great for run-and-gun documentary shooting in the GH5. However you'll be able to more easily achieve nice bokeh (background blur) on the fullframe A7III and get better lowlight performance. You can't really go wrong either way but if you're mainly using it for video I'd say GH5!
312SES Rock the sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 with a metabones adapter. When stopped down to f/2 or so, low light isn’t bad. However you will have a pretty shallow DOF and not as sharp of an image.
Hard to say my friend, as that depends on what you need it for. However, the A7III is great for that. Check out the Sigma 18-35mm video I just posted on my channel, also look into the panasonic 12-35mm 2.8.
What camera should I buy if I want handheld stabilization, low light, high quality slow motion. Photos are not important at all to me. Focus should be good.
Oh man. That’s a tough one! Hard to name a camera that has it all. But I’d say the Sony a7siii is going to come as close to that as possible. For a cheaper option maybe check out the Fuji XT-4 however lowlight and slow motion won’t be as good. But still not bad
@@ConnorRickey thanks for the quick reply! I just subbed to you, you put out really great content for only having 6k followers! I was looking for something like the Panasonic GH5 but many reviews say the camera is bad in low light... Also My budged range is from 500-1500 dollars brand new.. Im shooting a music video where I need almost all specs, while I also want to use the camera for vlogging, so no interest in photos at all.. if I made it any easier to answer my question please let me know🙌🏻🙌🏻 keep up the good work!
I want a camera that has the video capabilities of the GH5 and the image capabilities of the Sony. I love love love my GH5 cameras. Thanks for sharing this!.
Hmm, which one do you think might be better for wedding videography? I heard that Sony a7iii has great low light settings which I'm thinking would be useful for filming first dances etc plus I won't always have control over lighting... But I love how smooth you've shown hand held GH5 shots like damn...
As a Gh5 user the better all around camera is the A7III, I love my GH5 so much literally. The 4K 60 is amazing and the quality of the camera is beautiful.. If you are strictly Video or a videographer more than you are a photographer get the GH5. But otherwise get the A7III. The stills on the gh5 are okay and in lowlight in the gh5 is suspect. I do love my GH5 but if i could i would get a A7III
May I ask you why the GH5 is better for videographers? I"m looking for a camera who is mostly for filmmaking but also be able to shoot some beautiful pictures. I find it hard to make a decision.
Great timing. We love our 3 trusted A7IIIs, but miss higher framerates. Have been looking into getting the GH5 for a dedicated FPS camera. How do you find the quality of the 1080p 240fps vs the 1080p 120fps on the A7iii?
To be totally honest, I never use 240 on the GH5. Highest I'll go is 120, so I can't really speak to that. I use the Sony FS700 for high frame rate shooting since I can do 240p in 2K and 120 in 4K using an Atamos Shogun recorder. However, I like the 120 quality in the GH5 over the 120 on A7iii. Looks cleaner IMO.
Thank you so much boss, am upcoming filmmaker, I would to get an advise from you that, as am starting my journey of Filming short movies, between, lumix gh5, Canon eos r and Sony a7iii which camera can I go for, and why should I go for that. My budget is ok on those threes cameras, am in South Africa
Can't really go wrong with any of those options! If you're shooting mostly video I'd go with the GH5. If you will be shooting photos AND video, go A7iii
hello connor.i'm a cinematographer from Cameroon.i currently use the GH5 for most of my music videos and I can tell you just on point.its a great camera for videos with a perfect auto focus.
GH5s has better lowlight, that's for sure. But you lose the IBIS. I haven't done a comparison myself yet, but you might want to look up "GH5 vs GH5s" to learn the differences. The Sigma 18-35mm 1.8 is a great lens.
Great vid, earned a sub What a tough choice to make. Trying to decide between these two, most of my camera work is outdoors where I'm carrying gear whilst riding my mountain bike. The I need the A73 in ght GH5 body I think! Would you be comfortable buying the A73 to spend its life getting abused on MTB trails?
Hey man. I have a sony a6400 but its very shakey and had bad roller shutter. Ideally Id like to film MTB and RC helicopters. I am very interested in the GH5 but worry a bit about auto focus. What camera would you suggest? Many thanks
I still think the GH5 would be great for you. If you get native glass, autofocus will be OK (of course not the best, you can’t have it all for that price point). I own the a7siii and it’s incredible. It truly is the best of all worlds in 1 body, but it comes with a cost. You might want to look into the Lumix S5 or Sony a7C. Hope this helps!
I’ve had a g7 for about 4-5 years and am sticking with LUMIX (mainly film/ narrative) very excited for that ibis as much as I love balancing a gimbal and being scared of a light drizzle. Also with the price gonna grab Air2. Quick question. As far as a killer lens would you go with the 12-35 2.8 or mainly primes? OR throw on a speed booster 18-35 sig.?
Sounds like a good plan! Regarding the lenses, it's hard for me to advise you there since it's such a personal preference. For me, I literally only use primes when shooting interviews. For my style of shooting, primes just don't work most the time. I love the 18-35 1.8. Gives you that extra stop compared to the 12-35 2.8. But then again, you have a wider lens with the 12-35. So, just depends on your style and needs. I wish a 12-35 1.8 existed! Hope this helps!
So I should just get a GH5 to continue to shoot music videos instead of wait or other close options. I shoot with a Osmo pocket and a Canon 7D, so anything should be a upgrade at this point. Anyone thinks I should just get a Blackmagic 4k?
Possibly. Depends on what you need. I still use the GH5. Just because there are newer, "better," cameras out there, doesn't mean the GH5 is now "bad." For the $$ - it's an insane value. Hope this helps!
I am a G85, GH4, GH5, and GH5S video shooter and for me, one thing you did not mention that is a pro is the price of the M43 lens they are cheaper and smaller as well.

Great video buddy! Thank you for sharing! Subscribed! I have a GH5 and love using it! Favorite feature probably is the IBIS for me! Wish it had a sensor like one found in the Black Magic Pocket 4k camera though, that combination would be better!
Agreed! Wish we could have it all!
Wow! A really honest review....Thank you, that helped me to choose which camera... I’m really big on still shots and I choose the A7. Having said that and as much as I prefer the GH5 body I just can’t thank you enough.
Glad to hear it! 🙌
Great video!!! I subscribed.
Would the a7c be a good option considering it has a flip out screen and records 4k 60?
Glad you enjoyed! Yep the A7C is awesome!
A7c does NOT record 4k60....
Thanks for the honesty, bro. Subscribed!
No worries! Thanks for the sub!
Bro spot on with this review.. when you said you missing the flip out screen I was like, “yessss”. I can’t stand that screen on the Sony. Both awesome cameras.
Chris Canning Thanks! Yup, can’t live without that flip out screen 😂
I have the a7iii The flip out is cool if you vlog but I VERY rarely finding myself NEEDING it
Thanks, considering both cameras atm, as I have been shooting stills with an old 5D Classic and vids on my iPhone, but would really like to jump to a single camera for all. So torn!
Thanks for the great vid!
Hey, it's a tough decision! You may want to check out the Fuji xt3 or xt4, could be good options for you as well. Thanks for watching!
Great review mate !
Thanks Gabriel!
What lens would you recommend for the g5 👀 top 3
Great video btw
When the GH5 first came out, I fell in love with it. Then the A73 came out and I fell in love with it. I've used both of them but have not purchased either. I plan to wait for the A74, but if I had to pick between the 2 (A73 vs GH5) I'd have to go with the A73 and the choice is simple to me. Full Sensor, Auto Focus, Footage Quality, and the much smaller body.
I feel you, it's a hard choice between the two! Which features are you looking for in the A74?
You should see how bulky my cinema rig is 😂
Great comparison! Just subscribed. Thanks for putting this together.
Appreciate that, glad you enjoyed!
What lens are you using to record yourself at minute 3.30 - I don't like the way it renders the background. What lens are you using for the dog take at 4.31? Looks amazing! Also the lady at the bridge looks great at minute 4.40!
If you use 3:30 instead of 3.30 people can actually click on the timecode just fyi
glad I'm not the only one with this exact question
It's a tough one!
@@ConnorRickey yeah, I ended up getting the Sony a7 iii tho and I have no regrets! i’m in love with it!
@@zacharytaylor2331 Awesome! Congrats!
What camera was the video shot on? (the talking head bits)
3:33 what camera were you using to make this video?
A7iii!
This was super helpful TY
Great video man! I like your style. I love my GH5!
hey man i bought the GH5 but the body only. what lens would you suggest i purchase, what lens are you using in this video?? Great video btw you swayed my decision into buying!
Depends! For an all-arounder I love the sigma 18-35mm 1.8.
Yup. You got my subscription. Great work! I do own a GH5 and besides all that pros u mentioned, i think the battery time would totally kills the A7iii.
I have both cameras and I agree with everything said here
Hi Conner,
I'm glad I found your channel. Because you are also a mountain biker who makes movies. I am looking for a camera to make MTB edits. would you recommend here rather the GH% or the A7iii?
I mean both have disadvantages in front of us, but just because of all the movement that is in a MTB edit, probably the GH5 would be better. What do you think?
loved it!! about to buy the gh5
Great vid; I've been spending the last few months reading/watching reviews comparing the 2 cameras. I'm looking mainly for video capabilities for leisurely filming and to practice editing (I work in post production), as well as filming stock footage. I'm leaning towards the GH5 at the moment.
Luke GH5 would be a great option, yes! But you can’t go wrong with either. Thanks for stopping by!
Really well done video 👍
Thanks Will! Glad you enjoyed
Doesn't the GH5 have the same issue with the electronic focus? (ramping up depending on how fast you spin it)
Your shooting beautiful video i like it very much sir :)
Glad you enjoyed!
Thank you for sharing! Awesome information. We are travelers and we were using iPhones for a while for our RUclips channel. We are looking to start to use a camera now for our travel videos. The touch screen is a big feature as you mention for us. I think gh5 has a big advantage with that.
What’s the difference between gh5s and gh5?
Gh5s gives up IBIS in order to give you a little more options with video. Slightly better DR too.
How do you get around the challenges of night filming with the GH5 - apart from using the Sony...
312SES Rock the sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 with a metabones adapter. When stopped down to f/2 or so, low light isn’t bad. However you will have a pretty shallow DOF and not as sharp of an image.
whats the best camera currently for photo and video? also what are the best lens to purchase for gh5 if you wanted to take good photography
Hard to say my friend, as that depends on what you need it for. However, the A7III is great for that. Check out the Sigma 18-35mm video I just posted on my channel, also look into the panasonic 12-35mm 2.8.
@@ConnorRickey so only one lens needed for the gh5 for video and photography? 12-35?
@@ConnorRickey also I would rather have great lowlight preference over auto focus! And I should note full frame is a priority aswell
@@Zentivated The A7III will be great for you in that case. Cheers man!
@@ConnorRickey thanks man!!
I have both and they are incredible as a Pair. No matter what I need I got the solution. Love Both.
Jonathan Wayne Andress True that!
Yep... I agree with you :-)
You got my subs bro👍. Very well explained with great real practical video not just a specs review like some other channels do.
Appreciate that!
I want a camera that has the video capabilities of the GH5 and the image capabilities of the Sony. I love love love my GH5 cameras. Thanks for sharing this!.
Jay Jayasuriya, perhaps the canon EOS R 5 will have that
Jay Jayasuriya Check out the Fuji XT4! Haven’t used one yet but it looks promising.
@@ConnorRickey oh ok cool
@@PeacefulMoments1844 ... and it's a perfect heater as well.
Hmm, which one do you think might be better for wedding videography? I heard that Sony a7iii has great low light settings which I'm thinking would be useful for filming first dances etc plus I won't always have control over lighting... But I love how smooth you've shown hand held GH5 shots like damn...
hello how about eos R compare to a7iii and gh5?
EOS R has better skin tone color and autofocus. Other than that, the gh5 and a7iii have way more features.
Great review 👍
Good job
Thanks !
With GH5 I have heard that ISO is pretty damn good too.Especially comparing to GH4 or G85
What kind of len works best for close shots? I'm super new to this and dont know alot about cameras. Trying to get into it
Can't recommend the sigma 18-35mm enough
I like your way to Review the things . Great job.
Appreciate it, glad you enjoyed!
Should i go for gs5 ?
If you mean GH5, go for it :)
One of my favorite features about the GH5 must be the 1080p 180fps
Nice feature to have!
@@MartinBissonnette 180!
hello connor.i'm a cinematographer from Cameroon.i currently use the GH5 for most of my music videos and I can tell you just on point.its a great camera for videos with a perfect auto focus.
Nice! My friend was living in Cameroon until she was forced to return to the U.S. due to COVID-19.
Do you have the old model or new model?
Awesome Work ✌️
Thanks!
What about GH5S? What if i want to buy gh5s so which lense should i buy with it. I am learning filmmaking.
GH5s has better lowlight, that's for sure. But you lose the IBIS. I haven't done a comparison myself yet, but you might want to look up "GH5 vs GH5s" to learn the differences. The Sigma 18-35mm 1.8 is a great lens.
@@ConnorRickey thank you so much
Thanks for the video!!! How can you compare the stabilization between de gH5 and the Sony 7RIII?
GH5 is far better.
Great vid, earned a sub
What a tough choice to make. Trying to decide between these two, most of my camera work is outdoors where I'm carrying gear whilst riding my mountain bike. The I need the A73 in ght GH5 body I think! Would you be comfortable buying the A73 to spend its life getting abused on MTB trails?
Sorry for the delay. Yeah you should be fine. Since this video came out, though, check out the A7C!
I want to shoot real estate and interior videos professionally. Which one should I go for? A73 or gh5?
Also - if you’re torn between cameras - rent a couple. You can rent a Gh5 and/or a7c on Lensrentals.com.
For the g7, what color profiles and things have you tried that you liked. The settings in it too
@@lovefirst6157 I'll have to make a video about this soon!
What's up, Thank you for reviewing the Panasonic GH5 and Sony A7III. But on this one i'm going for the panasonic GH5.
You're welcome! You'll enjoy the GH5, let me know if you have any questions when you get it.
nice vid. i have /use all gh5 / g7 , and sony a7 / a7r for video and photo respectively.
subbed.
Which camera do u use in this videos?
So I should just get a GH5 to continue to shoot music videos instead of wait or other close options. I shoot with a Osmo pocket and a Canon 7D, so anything should be a upgrade at this point. Anyone thinks I should just get a Blackmagic 4k?
the dynamic range though, a7iii is a hollywood level already
Great video. Subbed buddy
Appreciate it!
Autofocus and ISO make Sony king 👑
But to much autofocus & iso make some video not aesthetic
Can I do videography with a GH4 with a standard kitlens?
Of course! You can do videography on anything. Learn the basics before investing in an expensive camera.
Is it still worth it even though there are rumors of micro 4/3s dying are?
This is true! I've mentioned this in some of my updated GH5 videos :)
I have a question mate. I have a canon 80D camera and I always shoot mushy footage out of it why? Even though I tweak with options. Why this happens?
Because the 80D doesn’t shoot great video my man. Time for an upgrade 🙌
