  • A radio made by a vacuum cleaner company? Here it is, a Goblin Time Spot. I couldn't resist this unusual radio when I saw it. It's in rough shape but I think I can bring it back. This week I'll rewind the clock coil and make some dial glasses.

    Great clock and radio fix ! Why would you care if the 'ratings drop off' for case restorations ? I'd like to see it for one, and I'm certain I'm not alone - don't pander to people with a short attention span Dave - it's their loss.

    The case is the most sexy part of the radio. Maybe if you payed into that sexy angle the ratings wont drop off as much. Maybe make jokes, do music, wolf whistles, and play into the twin round domes angle. After all you are dressing up the sexy goblin for a good time.

I Actually enjoy it all very much as it reminds me of my youth and training back at technical school in the sixties. The final exam for my first year had only one question. Hi Vern, thank you. The mould is made from scrap wood and is disposable, I will not keep it. The downside of this idea is there is no dome in the lens. I wondered about applying a bit of air pressure under the plastic during forming to make a very slight dome 🙂

    Amazing problem solving skills. 👏 You have expended your machine park. That laser cutter is quite powerful. I like you improving on the original design using modern technologies. In another radio If I were you I would use a solid state voltage regulator or a constant current source to improve the original design. If a tube radio requires less maintenance it would be used much longer. Good luck you do great projects. Also case restoration shouldn't reduce your rating. You do great job there.

    Really enjoyable watch, seeing you solve the issues with the clock and the method of making those replacement dial covers. Nice gag with the hot pie. Reminds me of my early days as a technician in a calibration lab. @1977. We had a small calibrated oven for testing components and equipment at different temperatures. It went upto 200 degrees centigrade and as young men we found another use for it, heating our pies for lunch. Until one day some VIP's visited the lab with the MD while 4 were on the go. None of us could get near it during the visit and the aroma went from a mouth watering one to one approaching charcoal as they left. The MD casually offered his guests lunch at the nearby canteen as he gave us a look that clearly said it would be hot for us too on his return. We never did get the marks off the base of the oven. It was salad days after that.

    • @DavidTipton101
      @DavidTipton101  16 часов назад

      What gag? that was my lunch 😄 Haha... burnt pies during a VIP visit, it sound like something from a sitcom with the employees glancing as the oven all the time. That reminds me, we got a huge new oven delivered to our department back in the 70s. It was 10 feet tall, round in shape and painted green. It was just before Christmas. I was in charge of the Christmas break up party for about 50 or so people so I thought of heating a few hundred sausage rolls in the new oven. It worked great and heated the rolls to perfection. Management found out and when I returned after Christmas I got a right a right bollocking. We didn't have sausage rolls the next year, it was back to salads and cold meat 🙄

    You're only going to breeze over the case resto ?! That's my favorite part. 😭
    Fantastic job on the lenses, I've been procrastinating about doing the same thing for a pair of tail light lenses on
    a vintage car using 3mm acrylic but yeah, I keep chickening out trying it.
    Also, back in the day, with motor driven "digital" clocks in cars, the synchronous motor was kept in check by a small
    piece of spring steel on a very light spring which would keep the pawl from running in reverse.
    They used a truck load of electronics to produce the AC signal for the motor because LED displays were still a way off.
    Vacuum Flouro displays soon arrived though which looked fantastic in '70s cars.
    LED displays were available, I remember the Apollo command module and Lunar module used LED displays.
    Okay...long post. Shutting up now.

    Early radios with clocks have always interested me, getting anyone to fix the clock movements in the US is very difficult as most horologists will kick you out of their shop the second you say the word "electric." I have some Westinghouse WR-8 movements that "tick" because the electric motor is basically just replacing the winders of an actual clockwork movement. So a traditional clock repair guy should have no problems servicing it as long as the motor is still okay, but they won't even give it a try. Over here in '31-32 grandfather clock radios were a big fad and I've owned almost a dozen of them over the years. The tricky part is that most are so primitive they can't self start, so if you have a big wall of them on display and the power goes out, you have to move the big heavy clumsy things off the wall to reach behind and restart them.

    • @DavidTipton101
      @DavidTipton101  День назад

      It does seem a bit odd the repairers won't have a go at electric clocks. Maybe past experience or not wanting to play with mains power is a reason. No self start, haha... you must dread power outages 🙂

    Wow ! That was quite incredible Dave, even for you. Only downside; I have to conclude I'll never be as good a radio restorer as you after watching this. I was on the edge of my seat when you removed the top plate on the clock fearing springs and gears were going to fly off, but the plastic molding scenes calmed me down lol. I also agree 100% with noakeswalker, the cabinet work is something i'm always looking forward to and to use a theatre term, it is the catharsis of a complex restoration. Always ! I think you don't realize you are know for your incredible cabinet work (namely) in our growing radio community. But hey, i respect your view here, do it as you please, i'll be watching either way. Hello Raymond. I avoided pulling the clock completely apart initially but that's what happened in the end when I replaced the kicker plate. It was very easy and I became quite comfortable pulling it apart after a few times when testing the new plate for fit. I will pull them apart fully in future to do a proper clean. I will still show the cabinet restore but only the major points, It get's boring even for me to do the same thing over and over. Thanks Raymond 👍🙂

    Once again, David goes above and beyond the call of duty! Forming your own replacement dial lenses? Holy cow, that was amazing! I find your Chinese coil winder fascinating. I attempted to build a dual stepper motor powered and arduino-controlled winder some years back, but solving all the problems with it was turning into an avocation all on its own. I wouldn't buy one of those Chinese ones due to the lack of good documentation, and I'm sure others feel the same. How long did it take you to figure out how to use it on your own?

    • @DavidTipton101
      @DavidTipton101  2 дня назад +1

      Thanks Jason. I also built a multi stepper motor winder myself but like you I was spending too much time on it and decided to get the Chinese one. There is English documentation for the winder. I think I left a link for it on the first video I did using the new winder. It is available on the internet as well. It was tricky to understand how to set it up but it is pretty straightforward and I can go back and set it up after a few months have passed when I haven't used it. There are couple of videos showing how to use it as well. I linked them in the same video 👍🙂

    Cool, Fantastic that you have found a foolproof way to make those screens, love watching the experiments into formation of lenses for radios and clocks. that always used to be a deal killer for me, if the screen was discolored i didn't get the unit. Now, however perhaps I can expand my buying; of course that all depends on my bank book which has been shrinking drastically now that food prices have nearly doubled thanks to politics here in the USA.

    Dave your skills have skyrocketed in the last couple of years and the new toys have certainly added to your capabilities. I work on vintage televisions from the post-war period and in more and more of these TV's vertical output and horizontal blocking transformers are going open due to heat, varnish breakdown and general wear and use. I would love to explore rewinding and your "adventures" in rewinding coils of all types is very inspiring.

    Dear David, if you (at 14:50 ) want to measure the inside diameter of something with a vernier calliper you can simply use the two hands sticking out at the other side of the calliper…. Keep up the good work, I really enjoy your channel!

    • @DavidTipton101
      @DavidTipton101  День назад

      Of course, I didn't want to do that because measuring the inside of a circle with callipers can be inaccurate. It was easier and more accurate to measure the outside and deduct the thickness of the plastic. Thanks @guusk.4913 👍🙂

    Adding turns baffled me for a moment (because more turns are associated with higher voltages in a transformer and your clock was stalling at lower voltages). But I can't argue with results. Maybe, can I theorize, there was a problem with the whole thing heating up too much from overcurrent (you may have used a better, lower resistance grade of copper wire?) and it was binding such that only the torque associated with a higher voltage was enough to overcome the binding. In such a case a series resistor might, counterintuitively given the voltage problem, also be able to cut the current down enough to avert the overheating. But good that you got it operating in any case.

    • @DavidTipton101
      @DavidTipton101  17 часов назад

      Hi Seeking, I totally agree with you, I didn't know if I should add or subtract turns. I don't think the issue is heat related, the coil does not get hot at all, it's quite cool. The wire I used was exactly the some diameter and the same resistance within a close tolerance, I measured and compared lengths of the new and old wire but I left it out of the video. The clock is running fine and has been for weeks now. It did stop once which I mention in the next video but it ran OK after that stoppage. I am hoping someone has a coil they can measure or information that can help determine what I should have done.

    Great Clockwork, Dave! You made rewinding that coil look easy! I also liked the way you solved the dial face lens replacements. Exactly like what I used to do in my model airplane days, but I didn't have a laser cutter. I used to mold my canopies over a form cut from hard balsa. I will have to do the same again soon for an old Japanese radio I'm working on so I was glad to see your review of the process. And by all means keep up the cabinet work videos! Love to see a case resto. I def watch these.
    Dumb question - do you add turns, or remove them when you want more flux for a clock motor. This has confused me in the past, but I figured at the time (in my head) more turns means the supply voltage gets divided more times, which means less voltage across each individual turn, which implies less current overall. I must admit I found this question very confusing. I also figured out that since the turn ratio of a transformer is the same as the voltage ratio it made sense (in my head) that more turns on the primary means less voltage on the unchanged secondary - also implying there's less core flux internally. Could have this all completely wrong of course, so interested in your thoughts. I know on the setric motor I had, I decided to remove turns, and when I did the measured current increased, and the motor seemed to run better.

    • @DavidTipton101
      @DavidTipton101  День назад +1

      Hello Seiskid, thank you. That is the same question I asked myself, does it need more turns or less. I also asked Google but I didn't find an answer. The motor had plenty of grunt (relatively) when I used my finger to stop it after I added the extra turns. The new wire is the same resistance and diameter as the old wire. If I knew what the total resistance of a good coil was I could match it 🤔🙂

  • @richb419
    @richb419 4 дня назад

    Hi David, the way I have wound unknown number of windings on a spool was, I weighed the part before removing the wire then measured the wire then wound until the weight matched. not perfect but worked well.
    Nice job on the clock face window, where I worked the plastics department used a similar method. they dried the plastic in an oven to remove any moisture then mounted the piece, so the edges were secure then heated in an oven and formed. similar to what you have done except they used a vacuum to pull the plastic over the mold.
    Rich

    • @DavidTipton101
      @DavidTipton101  2 дня назад +1

      Hi Rich, Yes, weighing it is fine. To be honest I am not sure what we are trying to achieve with the winding. Is it mass or turns. I measured the new wires resistance compared to the old wire and it was very, very close and the diameter was the same so I wound on about the same amount of wire as was on there. I avoid vacuum forming plastic as it requires a spotlessly clean former to shape the plastic. I either use air to dome the plastic or the method I used in the video, I will consider combining both if a I need a slightly domed lens in the future. Thanks Rich 👍🙂
