I've been thinking the same along many of these lines. Others say to serve to get 90% in, that way it is a tough serve to return. Also, a slow, high second shot really gives you time to be set. So if you get a fast hard second short return, you may want to drive it back to them as they approach the net.

Well, that was kinda scary/creepy..
This is almost EXACTLY what I teach many of my students..
"No spinny" at Kitchen, "just get it in" for serves.. etc..
