In the last volume of Andrzej Sapkowski's "The Witcher Saga" there is a nice reference to this term - a young boy who wants to join the army and fight the Nilgaardians tells a dwarf captain in an inn that the war they're about to fight in is The War Able To Put An End To All Wars. And the captain spits, takes a sip of beer and points at a fat lady by the counter: "You see her, boy? She's Evangelina Parr. She's big. Some may even say she's enormous. But, despite her size, she's definitely not a hooker able to put an end to all hookers...
I love this scene. It not only has great acting by Pine, it introduces the Lasso of Truth and its powers, as well as leading naturally into a big exposition dump that informs the entire rest of the story. It also grounds the superhero in the human world by introducing real war horrors. Real stakes. Real heroism. Real drama. Such a good scene.

4:24 What gets me about this scene is the look on Diana’s face when Steve says “Women and children slaughtered!” and he says it’s like the world is going to end. The look in her eyes is shocked, horrified, heartbroken…like her innocence is shattered by hearing about such suffering existing in the world while she’s safe in Themiscyera.

I just noticed something interesting in this scene. The lasso compels Steve to tell the truth, anytime he resist he feels pain. When he starts talking about war, especially when he says the line “It’s like nothing I’ve ever seen” you can tell his in pain, and I suspect it’s because he is unwilling to admit the truth of how afraid he is and how much pain and suffering he has witnessed as a result of the war. It’s a subtle but interesting expression during a critical moment of the film. Chris Pine did an excellent job in this scene.

"The war to end all wars."
Every time I hear that phrase, I feel so sorry for everyone who perished in the First World War. They thought they were giving their lives for a peace that would last generations, only to end about 20 years later.
Well, the Versailles Treaty is to blame for that situation. Germany was left dying and starving. Then the great depression. The nazis were a direct consequence.
Xado87 exactly. Hitler took advantage of a weakened Germany in order for him to gain power.
The treaty of Versailles was way too harsh on germany. France actually wanted it to be even harsher but the British and Americans said no to that. It's not suprising that the german people looked to Hitler as some savior even though that backfired on them
Germany was pushed to its absolute extreme and it's not suprising they broke
AgniKai not to mention Germany took almost the full blunt of it while Austria and other countries against the allies just watched. To bad Germans then didn’t know how bad Hitler was.
"Weapons more deadlier than you could ever imagine"
Atomic bomb: *Laughs in nuclear.
Nukes weren't around back then and what he said was indeed true. Ww1 saw the entry of chemical and biological warfare which was incredibly devastating, that combined with new weapons like machine guns, tanks, airplanes, mortars, Zeppelins, etc. made the war far more deadlier than anything that had happened before.
@@zippyparakeet1074 I know, I was talking about in the future lmao
@@zippyparakeet1074 I read that war is the "catalyst for technological innovation" and it seems to hold up. I would by no means say this innovation is good, as it's responsible for the deaths of countless individuals, but it seems to be a driving force for invention.
We now have weapons even more deadlier than Stevey could ever imagine too
Hiroshima and nagasaki
WW1 tends to get overlooked and overshadowed by WW2, but we cannot forget that not only was this the first war that engulfed the entire planet (hence the name) it's the war that changed warfare. For centuries, it had always been the larger army had the most likely chance of succeeding. Even when it went from the sword and spear to the musket and bayonet, it was still considered having the larger army had the best chance of winning. But WW1 made the use of larger armies obsolete; the weapons were evolving faster than we knew how to fight an counter. And what was worse, we had officers who were so used to how we fought before, (both armies marching out onto the field and taking turns exchanging shots while the other side reloads) and stubbornly believed that the war could still be won that way. Machine gun turrets and mortars could wipe out entire battalions in seconds, and long range artillery could destroy entire trenches.
This was also the first time we had developed tanks, flamethrowers and fighter planes for warfare. But the worst of it was the gas. Imagine peeking over your trench and seeing a thick green or yellow cloud miles long coming at you. One such event was in 1915, the second year of the war, at Osowiec Fortress. The Germans used chlorine and bromine gas in order to kill the Russians who were holding the line so that they could cover the retreat of the Russian army. The Russians had nothing to use to protect themselves from the gas, save for torn shirts and rags to cover their mouths and noses. When the Germans advanced, they expected the Russians to be completely wiped out. What they did not expect was for 100 Russians to slowly and painfully pick themselves up and advance toward them. The gas had killed most of the Russians there; those that got up suffered a far worse fate. The chemicals from the gas mixed with the moisture in their lungs, forming an acidic compound. They were poisoned and melting from the inside out. Their appearance was like that of the walking dead, coughing up large amounts of blood and bits of lung as flesh fell off here and there. This frightened the Germans so much that they retreated without firing a shot, despite having 7,000 men against the 100 Russians. This event was known as the Attack of the Dead Men, and one of the reasons why chemical warfare was forbidden for future use.
Oh yes….
Look up Sabaton, they have a song “Attack of the dead men” commending this.
They have many songs about WW1 and WW2. Plus other battles.
I am not a fan of metal rock…….but Sabaton is now an exception to that rule.
Back then there was no word Zombie back then to describe the living dead.
That was not till after WW2 I think…name came from a movie.
But if that word had existed, the Germans would of been SCREAMING it!
@@equarg Same here. I don't have a preferred music genre, but I do love Sabaton teaching history.
That's amazing, I dint know that. My 10 nephew loves this song. Gotta share this info w him.
I don’t blame them for retreating. If I saw this for the first time without being given context, I would genuinely think the fucking dead were coming back to life.
@@RetroCube That shows how wild and chaotic the first Great War was. No one knew how to fight it. With each new weapon came desperation in tactics, which led to more new weapons and even greater desperation. People truly believed the first World War was going to be the end of the world, and that it was only going to end one way; last man standing.
One such event to help demonstrate the chaotic desperation was December 13th, 1916, also known as White Friday on Mount Marmolada. There was no success in the battle, and more soldiers each day were dying from freezing to death rather than actual combat. Desperate for an advantage, the officers had the idea to launch mortars at the peaks of the mountain in order to bury the other side in an avalanche. Good strategy; except both sides had the same idea. Over 10,000 died on that mountain; most are buried under so much ice and snow we've only been able to recover a dozen or so bodies 100 years later.
To this day, Passchendaele is considered one of the greatest military blunders in history. Over 600,000 died in that battle to claim a mile of territory, which was lost again the next day. A decent amount of those men died not from combat, but from drowning in mud made from heavy rainfall and artillery destroying underground pipes.
The look on the Diana and the young Amazons as they were unable to grasp the sheer magnitude of the war being described to them. And the sorrow in Queen Hippolyta's face who probably is the only one among them who has seen such a scale of death in her lifetime.
Thats some pretty good acting there.

It’s during WW1 (I think) so fetishes didn’t exist yet but I get your point. Who wouldn’t want do be on an island with nothing but beautiful women? I sure as hell would.
(Edit: Ok as many of you have explained fetishes did exist so thank you all for the head up)

Lol thats what I was thinking as well. They only cared when he brought up women
Its because in the Comics, man were seen as the real reason of war and the Amazons sees the children as pure creatures because they cant have kids, they are mold through clay. They feel pity for women because they are molded by their image so they think woman are like them. Also you guys over react Diamna was already on board to stop the war at the beggining the cut scenes were just lacking, you guys interpreted this as man hating, just wow, wow. Dianna cared for the men in the was in the uncrossable path yet you guys think Dianna think about women is just sad. you guys are too drunk in hating Feminist that you mix fake feminist from real femenist. to comment on the comment section going on about germany I just want to say this Sun Tzu said in the art of war, When you surround an army, leave an outlet free. Do not press a desperate foe too hard. When a foe is cornered, they must fight for their lives and will do so with the energy of final fear. If you force them to go down in a blaze of glory they will do so, taking more of your troops than you might otherwise expend. The treaty of versailles pushed Germany in a corner they couldn't escape from and boom we got WWII just saying.

I really liked how he describes the sheer magnitude of the war and how horrible/apocalyptic it looked to people in that time period. Really sets a subtle dark historical feeling in the movie even if it’s about superheroes and stuff.
