Twisted sister would be synonymous with the 80’s having a triple platinum album and of course frontman Dee Snider stuck it to congress and the PMRC. Having sold millions of records during the decade, you’d think frontman Dee Snider would have been rolling in money, well he wasn’t. By the early to mid 90’s with the rise of alternative music, the frontman was broke and he had a great deal of business setbacks and just bad luck. . In today’s video, let’s explore what happened.
Twisted Sister were coming off the success of their third record Stay Hungry, which produced teh two huge hits we’re not gonna take it and i wanna rock. They were about to release their fourth album ‘Come out and play.’ There was big expectations that the album would sell well. Expecting a huge reception to their new album, the band designed an elaborate and expensive stage setup for the tour. Then release day came and the weeks came and went and the album proved to be a commercial disappointment. It went gold, selling a sixth of what its predecessor did. The tour wasn’t much better either. Despite garnering a ton of press coverage, frontman Dee Snider soon realized the press attention had more to do with the PMRC than the band’s music.. Despite playing a few sold out shows in the norhteast, once they left the region, ticket sales plummeted.
Despite touring with dokken they weren’t selling out shows, frequently playing to half sold out venues. Dee would add in his book that the setlists the band chose for the tour were equally bad choosing heavier songs and ditching pop metal songs. He would write in his book ‘they wanted to hear fun, funny songs. Twisted Sister’s core audience was gone.”
. Dee would also go on to theorize in his book that his band represented everything wrongv with rock and parents forbade there kids from attending their shows, only further hurting the band.
.
A month into the tour, the band was bleeding money and had to cut their losses so they scrappe the north american leg of the tour. To shield themselves from humiliation, Dee would admit faking a throat polyp and the band soon found themselves deep in debt. Soon enough atlantic pulled the plug on promoting, despite some bigger crowds in Europe. The final straw for the label MTV banning the video for the third single due to what the network claimed was ‘horrific content.’ Dee would reveal in his book ‘to me that was the final nail in the coffin of our career.’ Dee would reveal the true reality of the band’s finances up until this point writing “when you don;t break until your third or fourth album, you are in debt to your record company for all the recording budgets, videos, tour support, and whatever other bullshit they can charge against your account. That has accumulated over the years, you are in debt baby. One big selling record, only serves to pay it back. You need to sustain your career to make money. “
Dee seems to clarify in his book he didn’t spend money on drugs, alcohol or be ripped off by management or the label. He would even ask the question why didn’t he curb his spending to adjust for his decreased income. Well he writes quite frequently in his book that his ego wouldn’t let him. He still believed that despite this setback the band was going through, it was temporary.
. While twisted sister took a break, Dee set out to record a solo record, that was more pop influenced, initially taking inspiration from bryan adams - he would also nab a spot hosting the pre-cursor to headbangers ball on mtv,- heavy metal mania. But Dee would eventually leave the show after feeling too overexposed and due to the fact that mtv was notoriously cheap and didn’t pay him.His management and label urged him to make his solo record the next Twisted Sister album, which he did.
Twisted Sister would release their fifth studio album Love is For Suckers in 1987 representing a moremade the most money in the band . He would remark in his book “if they insisted that i pay the entire million dollar debt , i would file for bankruptcy and they would get nothing. To this winterland responded , they wanted it all from me. And they didn’t care if i went bankrupt and they got nothing. They wanted t Видеоклипы

Dee still does his weekly House of Hair radio show where he plays 1980s glam metal, speed metal, thrash metal, and hard rock songs.
What's that available through?
@@nathanielzuranski It isn't.
@@nathanielzuranski It is sold to local radio stations. Check the website of FM rock stations in your area, one probably pays for it. My local station plays it Saturday nights 9pm - midnight.
@@nathanielzuranski Their website lists about a couple hundred radio stations in the United States and a few outside the country that broadcast it. (Apparently the Aussies love it.) I sometimes listened to it when I lived near Shreveport, but unfortunately it doesn't air in Dallas.
@@chitlitlahdoes on Sirius I believe,.I've heard it on radio in east.tx on Saturday nights
You always hear all these 80s metal bands blame 90s grunge music for their downfall. That’s BS. What lead to all these 80s bands downfalls was they became victims of their own success. What I mean by that is when they were young and hungry they put out a couple good albums, then the money and success came with all the partying and drugs and girls and that all took priority over the music. They all started pumping out shitty albums and thought people would buy it because they were slapping their band logo on the front of it. People are not stupid, and if you’re putting out bad music, they won’t spend their money on your band, they’ll go elsewhere and find music they like.
Very good points
To add to what I said, yeah grunge music just happened to be there at the time. It was new and something people hadn’t heard before. If it wasn’t grunge music, it would have been some other form of music that grabbed peoples attention.
Thank you for the post!✌🏼😊
Holy shit, Well said
Yeah. Society was starving for something new music-wise right before Grunge hit the scenes
His ego was his biggest issue. Too many bad decisions.
too much maga and not enough common decency and sense.
Why would you say that?
@MarchOrDie He said it himself. Financial disaster too.
@@jonirwin7316 But why would say something mean like that, its not nice bro😔
@@MarchOrDie Dee said it himself.
There was a time back then one would move to Florida for affordability 😊
No state income tax is still bring new Floridians every day
Dee is a trooper! Despite all his/Twisted Sister's setbacks, he always has worked hard, & landed on his feet.❤❤
No mention of "The house that Celine built", as Dee calls it(when she unknowingly bought a Christmas song he wrote)?
How he can live everyday being himself is funny AF!
The man has been through a lot, but he's come out on the other side stronger than ever. Between his radio show and his solo career I'd say he's doing rather well nowadays.
Ironically he will never again be in the position to sign a giant recording contracts and that’s exactly what he needs. In the early days of MTV record companies could get huge exposure and millions of sales promoting videos on that network. They could fabricate bands, offer terrible contracts, squeeze out every cent of profit and then cast them aside. TS and Dee never had a chance
Ironically, fellow Twisted Sister bandmate, Mark Mendoza, must've been happy while watching this video.
Seriously, at one point Mark HATED Dee Snider and, on a Behind The Music episode, Mendoza wanted Dee dead.
Luckily, they're cool now.
The end of the story is too short! “He turned it around”. Need more details 🤣
I mean, he listed off all the things he's doing to make money; voice acting, stage acting, radio hosting, the band got back together to tour. I'm not sure what more you want.
There will be a Part 2. Don’t expect a happy ending to this tale
My all time fave TS album you can’t stop rock & roll every track ❤
I have a friend that is a studio musician in NYC. He did studio work for Ritchie Blackmore and Rainbow. He is 62 now. IDK if its true but he said he went to Dee Snyders' house had a big Pentagram on the floor of his house in Long Island, NY. He said it was made of different colored tiles.
Have you seen his daughter? She doesnt look too witchy now does she? Even the Satanists are embarrassed by Dee. Nobody likes him.
I think he did an MTV Cribs episode at his house in New York. It might be on that.
@@buckodonnghaile4309 Oh really? I wonder if they showed it.This guy that told me is not famous and would have no reason to lie. He said it freaked him out. Thanks for telling me.
I believe it. It's an idiotic thing people do that hurts the resale value of their home. One of many idiotic things that caused Dee's financial downfall.
@@billymac6233the whole deal with the devil is to get rich duh. How the hell do you make it in rock without satanic symbols?
Poor Dee. It really is a long way to the top
If ya wanna rock n roll
And a long way to the bottom, too.

Twisted Blister always SUCKED
One thing Twisted Sisted did that hurt the perception of "Come Out and Play" was having a cover of the Shangri-La's song 'Leader of the Pack' as their lead single. It's a good song, but not something that metalheads would like.
And the video that got banned; Be Chrool to Your Scuel (with a guest appearance by Alice Cooper), some have speculated that MTV banned it in retaliation for Dee testifying before the Senate.
Following that album up with Love is for Suckers wasn't a bright idea either... 😄
@@Chris_Sherwoodso they toured with heavy rock and nobody turned up...then put out a softer album following their pop chart success, and that's a bad idea? Seems their 15 minutes was over either way
Such a great human. Met him and he was nothing but sweet.
Dee loves to believe that Twisted was bigger than Guns and Motley and they are not. Thst said, I’ll always root for him and his hubris.
Dee snider is probably one the coolest down to earth rockers from that generation.
Shit band tho
He trusted the wrong people and didn’t learn any lessons until too late. The industry takes advantage of honest trusting guys. He just wanted to be popular so he could make music and support his family
I chatted with Dee on Twitter at start of Ukraine war, he was very much against it. I thought it was pretty cool he responded. He was recruiting celebrities to join his cause and I suggested Steven Seagal. He actually reached out to him but said he stood with Russia. Exactly, those are the people you need to negotiate with. Oh well.
He was not committed and gave up pretty quickly and went back to selling marked up coffee beans and personal appearances.
I’m surprised he was against it where I live you’re shouted down if you’re not for the war
@@rnrtruestories Clown world lol
There's a couple of scary lookin' troons (well, all of 'em are scary) that have stolen his look. 😵💫😆🤣
When Dee made Strangland it completely changed things. I would see him all around Long Island. He never quit!!
Note to DEE. Get WOKE, Go Broke. lol
Those early TS shows in the NYC club scene supporting the Under the Blade album were some of the best shows I’ve ever seen. SMF!!!
Oh man. Sometimes I feel like this as an indie game studio owner. I try to keep my ego in check when making decisions, but so many hits and not enough recovery time in between. It can be hard. Good to hear he was able to recover and find work through other creative means utilizing his skill and talent. Life, amiright?
Wasn't he also in a horror movie??
Captain Howdy!
@@capitanchunk it was a cyber online horror movie plot
@@backwatersandbackroads it was Strangeland, but the online persona name he used was Captain Howdy

Yeah they were supposed to make a second one but never did 😢
Great video.
The music business never benefits the musician. The musician is always the first to be screwed. Unless your top-notch like Taylor Swift and can fart several hits every album, you can expect to be broke and or in debt and stuck in a can constantly on the road. Which is exactly what took the taste out of my mouth. I'll just keep my music in my room, where it made me the happiest from the beginning.
sooo...you make as much money off of your music as a band on a major label, but they get to tour the world and play in front of thousands on tour and live their dream. You sure you've thought this through?
Man, I wonder if he now resents writing we’re not gonna take it, because now politicians are using it for their campaigns.
Nah, he's now apart of the establishment he was once against
What’s up with the still photo of Robert Plant??😂
where's that?
@@rnrtruestoriesat about 3:21
Wow, I had no idea. I always thought he was more business savvy and successful.
Actually I liked the album "Love is for suckers"... Hot love kicks a*s
In Pete Townshend’s book he said that him and Roger downsized when the band started to make less money but John Entwistle wanted to kept his old mansion and lifestyle so he kept talking Pete into touring again.
He also talked about SpongeBob paying him a shit ton of money to use “I wanna rock”, and how he is forever grateful to them. I’m surprised you didn’t mention it
Strangeland is one of the best low-budget films ever.
Widow Maker was a heavier & better sounding band to me.
He had a huge career for a while as a host for anything rock basically. He was like the 'go-to' guy for that stuff
Good on him for finally turning things around for himself and his family.
when you have two albums in a row that totally suck,,your gonna fail

Dee peaked directly after his Big Adventure cameo.
Arrogance is his downfall, not to be mistaken for confidence
I saw them open for Iorn maiden great show
So did I,in March 1985 at cow palace arena in San Francisco, California
Huge Alice Cooper and Bowie fan here. Problem is partly the weird ass drag image, seriously horrrible
Ok boomer
Jayne County was even weirder
@Beankroft he's not kidding. Even for the garish and androgynous era of hair metal, this might have been too much
Plus funny you call him a boomer when he actually grew up in this era.

Their first two albums kick ass.
Kudos to Dee Dee for being the first Trans lead singer in Metal 🫡

He’s not trans. There’s a huge difference between an 80s rocker and a boy groomer.
i liked the wodowmaker LP
He is in an episode kitchen nightmares, lol
I've never been a fan of Twisted Sister at all i have to say.
i love the broke people as they leave fast food and get into the Ferarri
Dee was in court in 1985 along with Frank Zappa standing up for lyrics.
Now he's a part of the establishment he was once against
Yeah, I remember Dee Snyder being a petulant jackass and Frank Zappa was the intelligent adult in the room.
* Congress
John Denver stood up for it also, good for him for doing it.
@buckodonnghaile4309 Yes he did! They persecuted him for his song, Rocky Mountain High. A reference for smoking pot. That..offended the religious right.
CaptHowdy says hi
They were a legit heavy metal band that got stuck being linked in with the glam metal crowd
uh, they stuck themselves there to have commercial success.
I met him once he was very down to earth even share a life story
Bullshit

"I'll take 'Things that never happened' for 400, Alex"
It really doesn't matter if one is famous and losses all their money, one can parlay their fame to be successful elsewhere.
I had his Widowmaker album back when I was in high school. It was mediocre at best and Dee was long past his prime. I loved Twisted Sister but they eventually became yet another tired nostalgia act
I really liked this band!!!
When I was like 10!
Twisted Blister always sucked a$$
Either way you can't take it with you🎉🎉
U got that laurie ❤❤❤
Dee also has a new record heavy as anything available but no cookie monster on heroine vocals a very nice change.
He always looked like a guy you wouldn’t want to mess with,to me
lol really?
They didn’t want to take it, so his ego did.
RNR true corny stories delivers another banger…Can you milk some more Staley content please 🎉
I would assume the answer is that Twisted Sister only has one popular tune, and it's hard to eek out a lifelong career off of one song.
Two.. like most one hit wonders. But he's gone on and done just that, maybe just not to the private jet and chauffeur driven standard
T.S. was a decent band but at the end of the day, they weren't that good.
But Dee Snider seems like a awesome guy.
It takes a special kind of stupid to lose that much cash.... TWICE !
I’ve never been crazy for Twisted Sister, but Dee has always seemed to be a really cool and intelligent dude. Much respect for his keeping it together throughout those decades of odds against him.
❤
Good.
Seems like a genius
he should have moved out of Long Island lol that money never would have lasted him with his lifestyle.
I've always Loved Twisted Sister, and I have a Great deal of respect for Dee! [Lifelong listener]
Random fact: "1985 - Dee Snider from Twisted Sister gets his car restored in Clyde, NY."
*And somehow, I ended up living in Clyde for almost a decade. =D
Wow
That sucks for Dee twice.
Twisted Sister were always a joke. The solo in We're Not Gonna Take It is 💩.
Yes. Because all rock songs only chart if the guitar solo contains shred.
I declare bankruptcy 12 times a year
Imagine having your hair metal career ending when hair metal was still a thing
DEE. \m/
Poor Dee totally brainwashed 😂😂😂
How is it that he’s now worth 7 million?
They got over saturated. By the time the come out album came out. We were pretty sick of them.
Being a creep doesn’t help much.
Yikes
This is a lot of words and a long video to avoid saying one hit wonders don't get rich.
Bankruptcy is Bankruptcy dude. It's not different. Either chapter 7 or chapter 13. Chapter 11 if u have a biz. No different for poor people-but whatever doesn't make ur balls shrink I guess.
Novelty band,
Dee is a G
Every time I hear Dee bash Paul and Gene of kiss I laugh those guys are both worth a half a billion and Dee well yea your broke guess they are better at the business then you my friend
It's not just KISS. He bashes Metallica, Motley, Scorpions and so many other bands. He's a bitter, jealous old dick.
He must not be doing super great on money because he just sold a bunch of his publishing rights off
He’s not gonna take it!!!
Lay off the drugs, Dee.
They were a novalty band and I am amazed they made any money. They had one single a funny novelty song. The hair and clothes probably look any money they earned. I thought they were trans people
Did you seriously just bleep yourself for saying BS???

Come out n play was a fu ing awful.
Dee always had one of the ton ten voices. But he deserves to go broke dropping the album
Twisted Sister SUX always did and always will even though some of the members were talented. They looked like a bunch of clowns with cheap makeup. What a waste of space in the rock world.
Dee has always been a grifter in my opinion. A few years ago, he made a “metal” record that was promoted all over Liquid Metal. It was anything but…
Say what you want about him, he saved Rock n roll single-handedly in the 80s
WTF...no, he didn't.

Saved ?! Bwaahaha try decaf , he certainly did NOT!!!!! His ridiculous speech in Washington DC about a silly parential label was most absurd. If you respect Dee Snider and his music you need to get an mri, like quickly. A true buffoon.
Let’s be honest his music is not very good
In fairness, Come out and Play and Love Is for Suckers DID have relative success. (Which means, of course, only Dee's relatives bought it....)
