@Brunix_pro Not everything, it is inspired by it, like a beast and human bond but that's really it. If your wondering why it kinda looks the same there are creators and animators that worked on httyd that worked on this movie too.
My personal headcanon about why Red loved Masie so much was because she's had an experience of being cared by a kid. She was like Blue and a kid took care of her and loved her, but at some point something tragic happened that taught her to be cautious of humans. Maybe the kid died young, maybe the kid died of old age and she just had to defend them both from everyone, hence why she knows to be gentle when possible. OR Maybe like whales, she can recognize that Masie is a baby/kid and her maternal instincts have just been consistently kicking in. If so, she might be preggers and waiting to give birth in this film, which explains why she stays on the island
Does anybody notice that Red's pupils dilate every time she looks at Massie? It's truly an amazing detail that the animators put into this film and goes to show that Red really likes this child.
I love that red is a female. I get that sex doesn’t matter when it comes to animals, or anyone for that matter. But there is something very powerful about seeing brutal/strong female characters. It’s refreshing to see them be treated as equal. I get tired of females being portrayed as “fragile” when femininity is anything BUT fragile.
0:42 if this was the first ever shot of red in the movie that would have been amazing. so unexpected and terrifying only for you to eventually love her later on
What I like about Red's design is that compared to the other sea beasts, she has a very simple design, and to me that just indicates a much more dangerous foe given that it's pretty much a case of "what you see is what you get" in the most intimidating way possible since her look tells you that she doesn't need any sort of elaborate gimmicks to be able to just downright destroy you, just pure raw physical might and deceiving intelligence
I immediately recognized red as a female because of those fabulous eyelashes, the smooth scaleless skin, and the very blatant motherly personality. Not to mention that silent sass.
I’m not sure if I love or hate the fact that Red looks so much like Toothless. In one way it’s lazy and gives away the fact that the Beasts are harmless too soon but on the other hand there is a reason why that design works so well
The design is sorta “friend shaped” on my opinion. Another lovable character with the almond shaped head and wide smile is Stitch from Lilo and Stitch. It’s a design I see often with characters that are meant to be scary as well as cute. I think it works well, and any other design wouldn’t have been a great combination of the attitude they tried to give Red.
@@excitableanon2514 my only issue with that is that Toothless and Stitch were both either designed or imagined by the same person/people. As far as I’m aware, Red was designed by a completely different team, which just kind of makes it seem like they’re trying to ride the coattails of Stitch and Toothless’ success.
I disagree, its basic shape language. Toothless and Stitch werent the first character designs to figure out that oval, smooth designs give the viewer an impression of "dangerous but friendly", they were the most popular. The film makers definitely took inspiration from HTTYD but its nowhere near copying.
What I love about her design is that shape at the back of her head; those two big lumps are jaw muscles, that means she has a *tremendously* strong bite. As a person who absolutelly hates when female monsters are mostly presented as round, girly and cute (Looking at you Light Fury, I don't like you >:C) with little to no physical evidence of their strenght it really made me happy to see that on her. Also, _unlike the Light Fury_ her more rounded shape actually makes sense given she's a giant aquatic animal that must reach high speeds while swimming. _I swear I could make a 2 hour long video on how much I hate the Light Fury design and how it doesn't make sense apart from being cute and selling toys_
see, I think the opposite, that the humans were brimming with character in their designs (probably lending mainly to the cartoonish art style) and that the monsters looked kinda generic. my favourites were probably the giant walrus thingy and the crab, but the brickleback and red just seemed too smooth and rounded to me. loved the designs either way, and this was certainly one of my favourite films in a while

Just love the unimpressed/unamused looks Red kept giving Jacob after his failed attempts to catch a fish and when he tried to break the spear. 0:42 The way she disappears into the depths while staring at Jacob and Maysie is really unsettling. Also, did you know the color red drastically becomes less visible the further it is away in the ocean. That means things that are red can be much closer to you before they're visible. I have mixed feelings about this movie. Yes, there’s absolutely no question about whether it was inspired by How to Train Your Dragon or not. You could see where the story was going from a mile away and Red’s expressions are very similar to Toothless. But honestly.. That’s ok! It’s hard to make a good movie completely from scratch and I’m alright with people taking inspiration from other films as long as it’s not a blatant ripoff. I was IMMEDIATELY blown away by the animation as soon as it started. And the voice acting was on par. It felt like the voice actors were grabbed straight out of the 1800’s and you could feel the emotion coming off the characters. Yes the pacing of the movie was a bit weird and it feels like a big part of the story is missing. And there were also some side characters that felt like they were pretty useless to the actual story, but I don’t think it’s right to completely rip into this movie and not give credit where credit is do. Overall I really enjoyed it and it’s a great movie to watch in your spare time.
Honestly I'm super surprised that this movie has gotten this popular since half of the movie is about questioning the narrative of those in power actually looking at the numbers this movie isn't getting as popular as it should because of that narrative Lets fix this
I love this movie! But there was something that bothered me, when Red was shot down with the poisoned arrow, I began to get worried, but then when she was freed she got up like nothing happened and lived to see another day, and I’m like, what? Gwen stated that the poison was strong enough to kill a Sea Beast, so, shouldn’t Red be dead?
I wondered this too, like I’m assuming it’s because they didn’t use all of the poison but she still would have probably have had other adverse effects afterwards?
no. captain crow pulled it out before the poins could fully take effect. he did that so he could kill red in front of the king and queen instead of in the ocean where he fought her first
0:35 oh my god this scene was so terrifying to me. To be so small in a vast ocean where this big beast professionalizes in is terrifying. You wouldn’t be able to get away if she decided she wanted a snack.
The composition of so many shots in this movie was soooo good the way they weren’t afraid to have these shots where she just fills the frame and everything else is kept so small and simple is gorgeous
I kind of wish they had made Red look a little less huggable/look less like Toothless. Just cause both me and my sister kept commenting on how much we wanted to just cuddle with most of the sea beasts while watching this. Mind you Red did have her fair share of intimidating moments, like when she destroyed the Royal ship and just loomed over the ship’s ruins in the smoke.
I enjoy the fact that they went in a lot of effort to show that it’s not a killing machine but a animal defending its territory from humans who are simply expanding outward and not realizing that they are the invaders. Red in the movie never attacks without reason and even when red does it’s mostly just intimidation and often lets her attacker leave alive. The first chunk of the film is set in the humans perspective where they see giant monsters attacking their ships and think that they are the enemy instead of realizing they aren’t supposed to go that far from land. They even show off a way that the monsters help the food chain by bringing fish near the surface for seagulls to eat while also (potentially) having those fish clean up any infections they get.

I loved this movie I was so excited when I watched it I think my only gripe was that red who is amazing felt oddly simple and boring compared to the rest of the monsters, she could have used some markings or more smaller horns to make the giant one on her head stand out less but shes lovely anyway
Thought 1) well that's a very smooth, and rounded, and simple looking creature. Thought 2) ahh, I see they spent the budget on the water effects, suddenly thought 1 makes sense.
It’s sorta realistic to how a giant ocean animal prob would look. Not with crazy scales and giant fangs but instead similar to a whale with smooth skin and teeth close to an orca in design. Still, from a movie perspective they could’ve made her look more menacing.
You have to appreciate how the crab vs. red battle went. The crab knew full well that red would crush it so actively avoided her attacks. The very fact her horn can carve into Stone speaks volumes that she'd Crack the crabs shell like an egg to a pan if she hit it once.

Jacob had to get through to her, anger and vengence was clouding her mind that it caused masie to get hurt. She cares greatly for the child
The best thing about Red is that even without the ability to speak, we can still translate what she thinks just with her eyes, for example in the scene where Jacob is trying to catch the fish with his spear, Red looks at him sideways with a face of pure debauchery, as if she's almost saying "you really can't? It's that simple"
Red is simply my favorite character in the entire movie, and it's on the list of characters I love very much.

@@dragonmaster1334 so that is why red looks like toothless
My personal headcanon about why Red loved Masie so much was because she's had an experience of being cared by a kid. She was like Blue and a kid took care of her and loved her, but at some point something tragic happened that taught her to be cautious of humans. Maybe the kid died young, maybe the kid died of old age and she just had to defend them both from everyone, hence why she knows to be gentle when possible.
OR
Maybe like whales, she can recognize that Masie is a baby/kid and her maternal instincts have just been consistently kicking in. If so, she might be preggers and waiting to give birth in this film, which explains why she stays on the island
I love both those theories! I personally think it might the whale thing, as I see that as more of a possibility imo
I like the second theory better as she also does have some resembelence to a whale
Does anybody notice that Red's pupils dilate every time she looks at Massie? It's truly an amazing detail that the animators put into this film and goes to show that Red really likes this child.
It really does remind me of toothless from httyd! (they are animated by the same person, I think)
I love Red’s design, she’s so simple but so recognisable
4:59 This is epic! The scene, the background, the destruction, the smoke and the beast's growling, all pure epicness.
I doesn't matter at all and there have been strong female characters for the last 5 years

Ever seen a salamander?
_I swear I could make a 2 hour long video on how much I hate the Light Fury design and how it doesn't make sense apart from being cute and selling toys_
she gave me Toothless vibes

Ye

And squishy inside :D
The scene with Red swimming in the kelp forest is beautiful. I love the light and the music that makes it calming.
The human cast was pretty generic, but the monsters were so cool.I wish they were explored more
see, I think the opposite, that the humans were brimming with character in their designs (probably lending mainly to the cartoonish art style) and that the monsters looked kinda generic. my favourites were probably the giant walrus thingy and the crab, but the brickleback and red just seemed too smooth and rounded to me. loved the designs either way, and this was certainly one of my favourite films in a while

Purple crustacean: Wiat wha- *RED BLUSTER THROWS*
