“nudes” is about the early days of infatuation and the confrontational memories that come along with new romance. The song reflects on coping with the jealousy that can appear when new romantic partners mix their memories and past experiences. Feeling poisoned by the knowledge of everyone else that came before you, ruminating to the point of unhealthy obsession - and all the while, fantasizing about being the “one and only,” fixating on being “the best.” Getting tangled up in someones’ past in a way can be a bit embarrassing and self-sabotaging, hindering the forward motion of the relationship.
Musically, I think it’s a combination of despair and hope, longing and suffering, at once. It’s tonally unstable - pathetic to confident, begging to dreaming. It’s cathartic but restrained. Sonically, it wants to explode and spill out everywhere, but it has to stay cool and contained. It’s trying to keep it together. It’s raw but bound by the need to maintain composure.
The song describes a push and pull, we tried to capture that abstractly with my performance. My interactions w/ the microphone cable (an invisible force behind camera thrashing it around) are an illustration of that unpredictability. I wanted to portray the unstable emotional quality of the song’s lyrics. It mirrors the uncertainty of an unstable relationship. From running to crashing, it moves rapidly between best and worst self, creating a visibly fluctuating emotional state. Movement becomes increasingly unrestrained as the song goes on. Towards the end, the camera pulls back to show that I have been standing there alone, performing for hours as daylight fades.
The desert is a place where almost nothing can survive - hostile, uninhabitable - but also really beautiful. There is a conceptual connection there to the song meaning. Living in an uninhabitable mental state, romanticizing it, taking in the view.
Wonderful, I think you putting your thoughts about the song makes the song have more depth.

Oh this song is so.. it reminds me of the battle of trying to not fall in love and the despair that comes with it. Despair because it eventually ends with goodbye because the other person was just looking for a way to escape reality for a moment..

One thing I am impressed with, basically every time, is Luna's masterful use of eye contact. Before finding Luna, I would have considered myself an expert at eye contact uses within social interactions. But Luna turns eye contact into a freaking weapon, that catches you off-guard even after pausing the scene and re-watching it. I have to say, just watching Luna Shadows' videos has inspired me to step my game up, and I now even use the sudden eye snap thing she does. Bravo Luna!

@@username_ara If you are just watching this one song, then what I said would not make any sense. But in many of her songs she does that thing with a sudden head snap and sudden eye contact to try and make you jump. I have also used that trick irl and it works pretty well.
