Creeping Death from this set is a MUST. I have been fortunate enough to see them 11 times, on two continents. I saw them with Jason, and I have seen them with Rob. It's an experience like no other. I've never left a show disappointed. This band has transcended generations now. I took my son to see them last year for his very first concert. They still kicked ass. Average stadium in the USA holds between 50- 100 thousand people this concert had estimated 1.6 million people attend it. Probably like a million people watching this performance.
First of all, the 1.6 million people is a myth because nobody KNOWS how many people came to this free concert because the USSR was already in shambles. Secondly even IF 1.6 million people came to this concert that would not even reach the top 5 of biggest concerts of all time because Rod Stewart or Jean-Michel Jarre played live in front of 3 million plus people...
What are your impressions of the performance itself? J. Newsted: It drew about 130,000 spectators and 15,000 soldiers. And everyone wanted to see what was happening on the stage. The soldiers called to keep order did not know whether they should keep the fans in a tight grip, or start stamping to the beat themselves, or behave quietly so as not to cause trouble to their superiors. In addition, most of the soldiers were the same age as the fans. And by the time AC/DC started playing, most of them had unbuttoned their jackets, taken off their caps, and started waving their arms to the beat exactly like the teenagers around them.
The reason people say “no stairway” is because it’s considered the best rock song of all time. The intro to stairway is what every guitarist wants to learn and usually only learns the first part. It was before Metallica. Enter Sandman is another song every guitarist wants to learn and again usually only learns the intro. Stairway, Sandman, Smoke on the water by Deep Purple, Wish you were here by Pink Floyd… some of the songs a beginner guitarist would learn… but Stairway is on a different level if you learn it all the way through. I’m sure so many people butcher that song playing it in guitar stores.
Seen this a hundred times at least and I get chills when I see you younger people see and hear this for the first time! This was an important time in history! Makes it even better! Really dig your reactions! Metallica is one of my favorite bands. In Wayne's World, the reason Wayne isn't allowed to play Led Zeppelin's "Stairway To Heaven" in the music shop is because the director, Penelope Spheeris, wasn't able to get the rights to use the song in the movie. Either it was too expensive, or the band just wouldn't allow it. So, they had the "No Stairway To Heaven" sign made and turned it into a joke. Many people, particularly other guitarists, try to correct me on this (for a reason I'll explain next), but Penelope Spheeris talks specifically about this in interviews. If you go into a Guitar Center, or similar shop, legendary songs like Stairway are so overplayed that the staff get tired of hearing everyone's crappy renditions of them lol. Guitarists like to overexaggerate and say that certain songs are banned from being played in the store. I think that myth started after they watched Wayne's World because they incorrectly assume why the No Stairway scene was written.
The intro that you commented that it sounded like a western, is actually from the theme song "The Good the Bad and the Ugly. Check out the version by the Danish National Symphony Orchestra.....
I've heard this song a million and a half times over the last 30+ years it's been out lol. In the grand scheme of things, Enter Sandman is an ok Metallica song. Not great, not bad. Keep doing more Metallica songs :)
I was on a greyhound once. Whiling away the hour listening to my CDs. This teenager sitting behind me taps me on the shoulder, and asks "Do you have any Metallica I can borrow?" I whipped open my binder and said "I got almost all of them. Which one you want?" He was flustered for a moment, and said "Do you have that one, you know, Exit Light?" So I pulled out the Black Album and let him listen to it.

First of all, you are so pretty and cute! Luv ya girlie! According to most sources, there were over 50 deaths. Quite likely given the unexpected crowd (1.6 million plus) and insufficient health/emergency/medical care. The soldiers rocking out would have had to arrest anyone even listening to such music a month or two ago or been arrested themselves. And the wall came down.
Has anyone told you the story of Cliff Burton? Cliff was the original bass player for Metallica who was tragically killed in a touring accident when the band's charter bus crashed. You can see Cliff perform live in Metallica's older videos. After Cliff's death, he was replaced by Jason Newsted - that's who you see performing here. Ultimately Newsted left Metallica - I think - over differences between him and lead singer James Hetfield. Hetfield reportedly didn't like that Newsted was involving himself with other side projects. Hetfield believed that 100% of everyone's focus had to be on Metallica. Supposedly Newsted didn't like Hetfield's "controlling" attitude and ultimately left the band. He was replaced by Robert Trujillo - who you will see in newer videos. He's recognizable by his long, thick hair at a time when the others had reached an age where they were all losing theirs. Long-time Metallica fans love Cliff Burton and never miss an opportunity to memorialize him. Sadly, despite his contributions to Metallica - Jason Newsted doesn't seem to get the same affection. Life isn't always fair. Just part of the band's history. Thanks for your reactions.
Also - there is another clip on RUclips from this same concert in Moscow for their song "Harvester of Sorrow" that I actually prefer to this one - because the song has a much darker theme / meaning and the imagery of the crowd seems to reflect this. Remember - this concert was being performed right after the collapse of the Soviet Union - and while this performance of Sandman seems to reflect that newfound optimism for a better future - the Harvester of Sorrow video feels tense and ominous - as if the evil of Soviet Union's past hadn't vanished as easily as we had all hoped. I hope you get a chance to check it out some time.
