Lewisham Urban Opera: the journey to 2022

In 2021 Music and Theatre for All worked with partners in Lewisham to launch their first Urban Opera programme. Collaborating with composer/librettist Gwyneth Herbert and a stellar creative team, participants from all over the Borough and of all ages joined together to create their own story and opera. It was called Our Street. In the meantime MTFA worked with 5 schools (2 primary, 2 secondary and an SEN school) to create 8 separate operas. In 2022, as part of Lewisham's Borough of Culture year, all the operas were performed, individually, to large and diverse audiences. Our Street had its preview on 3rd July in The Homestead in Beckenham Place Park. This is the story of the months leading up to that day.
