Boomers are so meticulous about their pristine yards. Most millennials don’t have very abundant outdoor living space, let alone yards, so we have houseplants 🙃
Good point! Gen X here, but I live in an apartment and don't even dream of having a house. Working on a yard seems more like a nightmare.:p We have windows to the south and a balcony, so I have currently 5 herbs, a few succulents and two other plants. It would be nice to plant a few zuccinis on the balcony (in a planter box of course), and I have also other plant ideas yet to be realized.
Jillian Johnson Not to mention, we would want to take our plants potted so we can them with us if our landlords decides to kick us out of our homes so they can raise the rent. 😬

I mean people in general like houseplants.... I really don’t think millennials in general have more of a inclination towards houseplants. Maybe because they have social media so it looks like they are the only ones doing it?
This actually reminds me of Southern California in the 1970’s…I bought all the plants I could then in my early 20’s, and tried to convince my ex that we should open a shop. My favorite was my monstera. A about 7 years later, while working as an activities director at a skilled nursing facility, I put on a big luau for the patients and families, complete with authentic island dancers. I brought in some of my plants to add to the atmosphere. Sadly, someone swiped my monstera. I figured it was one of the staff and put up notices begging to get it back. I had that confirmed about a year later when someone told me who did it. I demanded my plant back, and their supervisor acted as if I were in the wrong. I did get it back, but it was a shadow of itself, and I couldn’t save it. I still feel sad for that plant. Now 76, I live in a one bedroom apartment with a little balcony on which I grow ornamental plants, lettuces and herbs. Inside I have fair light and have about 40 plants, to which I am always adding. I am propagating some and hope to supplement my income. I think a lot of older people who used to love their yards as well as their interior plants, but have downsized, are focused on their houseplants now. I am lucky to have a friend downstairs who shares my enthusiasm and we exchange cuttings.
Uhm yes? Nobody said that only millennials like plants? But there is an increase of interest in our generation and the representation thereof in social media. That's undeniable.

The love of indoor plants has gone in and out of fashion several times during my longish life. It's good to see them becoming fashionable again, but while a lot of these people will cut back on their indoor jungles when the fashion moves on, most of those who've been introduce to house plants now will probably keep some plants around for the rest of their lives, long after the current fashion subsides. Plants are just good to have around.
Yep. I became a plant enthusiast in my 20’s back in the early 1970’s. Begged my ex for us to open a plant store, but it wasn’t exciting to him. At age 76, I live in a one bedroom with balcony and fair lighting, I have about 40 and am adding more. Even propagating in hopes of supplementing my income. One thing I've noticed through the years: you can tell who your good friends are when you need someone to take care of plants while you're on a trip.
I’m 28 and this is my second year gardening I love it. I know it’s different than indoor planting but planting seeds outside and watching them grow into fruit or vegetables you can eat is so relaxing

When I was a kid, back in THE 80s my mom had a house jungle. I’d crawl around and pretend I was Jane of the house jungle. Then. She went to the yard. The thing is when you don’t have a yard you grow indoors!

It’s not necessarily a millennial thing- it’s just become a popular thing again. My mom and her friends grew multiple plants in their homes in the 80’s and 90’s. I think it’s a great thing that people are showing love to plants again! I’m thinking about getting some of my own. It looks so refreshing and peaceful.
I've been in plant care and a lover of plants most of my 68 years. Love your advice and Common sense on plants and care. I live in Hawaii now and it's a plant lady's dream. But respectful of the land 🌴💖💖🌈🌈 lucky and grateful
I got into plants via.. Seeing succulents on social media. I was so taken aback by how strange some of them were. I never knew plants could look like that, let alone plants you could grow yourself. I had never thought plants could look so strange and it kinda reminded me of when I was younger how my mom had a few plants here and there.. And she was into plants cus her family gardened for a lot of their food back in the day.. Me though part of my reason was also because it was a good excuse to keep my window open cus I had this habit of keeping the blinds closed 24/7. And I never really put effort into decorating my room. I got my first plant (echeveria ramillette) which died in a week (look where I'm at you wouldnt expect a frost advisory and that year we had one...) . My mom picked out a small mammillaria of sorts and my niece picked out a tiny lil graptoesdum vera Higgins. Those two survived. My mom felt bad and got me a lil arrangement.. Then I wanted more plants. Its a year later and I have like 30 flower pots. And I asked someone to keep an eye out for me today for this one special Haworthia that Walmart has had in stock on occasion. 😂
Tbh it’s super satisfying and not even super expensive to do. Beginner plants like pothos and spider plants are easy to propagate, which feels awesome to do when you successfully propagate them. And soon you’ll have a dozen of them! Super cool.
I just recently got into gardening, and I always thought while ornamental plants are pretty, they don't serve a purpose, so I enjoy veggie gardens instead
I’ve got 18 indoor plants, and I thought that was a lot! Many plants clear the air of toxins, so I have four in the bedroom. I’m 77, though, not a millennial!
I had plants all my life, probably because I live in a house with a pretty big garden. I always was amazed with the way plants grow. Like how a seed can grow into a flower. I have so many plants in my house right now, but also so many outside. I love the idea of having your own little jungle.
I’m a gen zer who works at two plant shops and I have over 100 plants in my tiny apartment I just think they are so amazing all the different kinds of foliage amaze me I love caring for them and watching them grow (I’m also autistic they’re my special interest)
in case you missed it, it's because a) plants are one of the only things we feel in control of in our lives; b) we can't afford larger living spaces with actual outdoor space. oops
I bought two indoor plants at the local hardware store that were half dying in the clearance section. I wanted nothing more than to save them and watch them flourish so I took a chance and bought them. I don’t know why it took me this long to put plants in my apartment but now I want more. They have such a calming effect and my family really enjoys them!
I've been orchid obsessed for about 8 years and I'm just now starting to get into other kinds of plants. I don't do it for social media, but watching other people with their plants does fuel my interest.
The thing about houseplants cleaning the air isn't really true. The NASA study that people cite in support is based on a totally sealed room. If your room is well ventilated, the air will be changing too quickly for the plants to achieve much. There are many good reasons to grow houseplants though.
It's not just NASA, lots of research has proven this. So, it's useless for things like CO2 but some plants can still reduce concentrations of certain volatile organic compounds (VOC's). You'd need a bunch of pretty big plants though, like a human-sized rubber tree, not a tiny herb. Herbs are still good for cooking though.
You realize that she didnt have just a house plant sitting in the corner or the two large plants that the nasa rep suggested, but rather the surface area of her plants greatly exceeds the surface area of all the surfaces in her living space. 9m2 of aglae surface area provided enough oxygen and waste cycling for bios3. Her surface area greatly exceeds that. Her plants interactions are the primary atmosphere in her live space at that point. An indian study found that 1,200 plants in a 50,000 square foot building with 300 workers drastically improve air quality by a magnitude of 33%. She has over 1000 in what looks like maybe 1000 square feet.
My grandpa have always loved plants. He has a beautiful garden and inspired me since I was little to take care of plants. I don’t think is a millennial thing.
I seriously thought I was the only one who hoarded plants like this. I’ve described myself as being like a cat lady, but with plants. Also whenever someone asks me if I have any pets I say, “Do plants count?”
I have a back yard but I prefer indoor plants. 1. Because I'm lazy 2. You don't need to go out during winter 3. You can get water right to them 4. Make you room lively 5. They are more intresteting than people

At least i am not alone, i have just gotten a house with a small side yard, and i have been obsessed with growing my flowers and watching my pants thrive. Yay

@@4thecultureco It's pretty self explanatory, is it not? His channel was listed in the video. They did give him credit, so I was asking if you were bringing attention to him specifically because he's cute. Or did I miss something else?

I'm really emotionally attached to my plants!
Seeing them growing and being healthy makes me so happy
Plants make me really happy, they bring people together and help our earth to be clean and they also help our air.
Im glad you chose to interview her because she doesn't have that look or tone that she's literally crazy or obsessed. She seems more like an avid hobbyist.
I have my first house plant. Have had it 51 years : )
Millennials keep plants... inside? That's insane!
Soon it will be like "millennials are eating peanut butter on toast! wow!"
(okay I'm sorry I seriously love this girl but I'd really like to see adults/seniors get some recognition! good video though!)
Avocado toast. It's cheap and tastes good.
@@elizabethingham7789 avocado is expensive
I love her! Amazing how she knows every single plant and it’s full scientific name.
Good for you Summer getting on the New Yorker!! For me as a plant lover, it’s weird meeting others. It feels like two unicorns meeting the jungle. But it’s great the hobby is growing
Growing..
I'm a tail-end boomer and I love plants -- but I choose to raise only a few large specimens of favorite plants. When plants get too large for my space, I divide them and give away part. One thing I've noticed through the years: you can tell who your good friends are when you need someone to take care of plants while you're on a trip.
Plants can be inexpensive and they help my depression. So i would be happy making a jungle in my house. Slowly working on doing so.
I’m 28 and this is my second year gardening I love it. I know it’s different than indoor planting but planting seeds outside and watching them grow into fruit or vegetables you can eat is so relaxing
5:34 - "If you know someone who is sick in the hospital, bring them some plants..."
It’s against hospital etiquette for a guest to bring fresh flowers, food, plants or fruits to a patient without asking first. “Infection control is crucial for patients who are very sick and do not have a strong immune system, such as burn victims, cancer or chemo patients,” explains Lee. “Fresh flowers, plants and fruits can carry fungal spores that can infect sick patients. Call the unit ahead of time to see what is appropriate to bring.” - www.rd.com/health/healthcare/hospital-etiquette/
That's my netflix.. exactly get off staring at a screen and plant!! It's beneficial mentally.
Hey New Yorker, this is awesome! You should link the RUclipsrs shown here, it’d probably mean a lot to them!
I spotted Harli G & The Plant Daddy and Kaylee Ellen’s Insta. Summer Rayne’s channel is amazing!! 🌱🌱
Yea they just used them
Pam Ela, maybe you should watch the video before you start to make such a statement? The journalists have done their job and given credits for the used footage at the end of the video. With other words, they have been professional.
Summer Rayne Oakes great channel!
Pick Up Limes!
Nick Pileggi is also great!
So...tons of people have always loved plants. Social media gives much more support and provides a sense of connection to plant lovers that is on another level compared with earlier generations.
Wonderful. Just simply wonderful. As a lifetime obsessed gardener, I am so happy to see younger people embracing the green world. Greed kills; Green heals.
I'm a millennial and I've always loved flowers, gardening and nature period
-"It's a New Yorker thing!"
My abuelita: HOLD MY CUBETAS
When I was a kid, back in THE 80s my mom had a house jungle. I’d crawl around and pretend I was Jane of the house jungle. Then. She went to the yard.
The thing is when you don’t have a yard you grow indoors!
"it's a new yorker thing, you want to be in a nice place" pretty sure that's a universal thing
I like it because I like having control over something. It also makes me feel good seeing my plant do well.
I'd subscribe to the new Yorker but they don't cite sources including RUclipsrs...
Right? I want to check out the chancel of the main woman they featured and I have no idea what her or her channels name is. Like even if they just could put a name in the bottom left corner in the video....?!
@@jaydencparker4968 I believe her channel is Summer Rayne Oakes. And yes, that's her real name. I don't know the other people.
They did cite all the yotubers at the end credits
Yeah its news for elitist rich folks
Dude at 2:23 smelling the plant made me LOL.
I’ve been starting my own indoor plant obsession and it’s because I find it therapeutic..something I can be proud about...they’re great for our air...and they’re living things inside my house, idk they’re just cool and nice to look at. I’ve got about 11 so far, and they’re all pretty healthy and each are different.
So glad I don't live in a big city. I open my back door and I am in an amazing garden. It's great that you guys are doing this though.
You're one of the lucky ones
@@joeys4289 , what's luck gotta do with it?
@@viggthepale the life we are born into obviously
It’s not necessarily a millennial thing- it’s just become a popular thing again. My mom and her friends grew multiple plants in their homes in the 80’s and 90’s. I think it’s a great thing that people are showing love to plants again! I’m thinking about getting some of my own. It looks so refreshing and peaceful.
I think this is because it reminds us of our grandmas houses
It’s crazy how I JUST followed her recently and love her videos & now she’s on the New Yorker 🙌🏽
So much safer, and generally more fulfilling, than dating 😬🤔😁
Super cool.
It's a natural itch to learn gardening. Soon all the food you will eat will be food you've grown. Ditch the ornamentals and grow an edible garden.
I'm almost 52 and never had one iota of interest in gardening.
@@sallyphillips9175 is never having an iota a double negative? ;)
(lurking as a guy with several aquaponic beds of veggies and 40 rainbow trout)
I just recently got into gardening, and I always thought while ornamental plants are pretty, they don't serve a purpose, so I enjoy veggie gardens instead
Working on this.. >-< but I don't have a yard.. So I'm trying to learn hydroponic gardening
I’ve got 18 indoor plants, and I thought that was a lot! Many plants clear the air of toxins, so I have four in the bedroom. I’m 77, though, not a millennial!
I really enjoyed this video!!!! It made me happy to see all of those people loving plants just like I do 💚🌱✨
It’s not just the millennials. All kinds of folks are embracing plant life right now.💚
You feature these people and don’t put their channels in the description? Weaksauce.
I had plants all my life, probably because I live in a house with a pretty big garden. I always was amazed with the way plants grow. Like how a seed can grow into a flower. I have so many plants in my house right now, but also so many outside. I love the idea of having your own little jungle.
Houseplants remind us of avocados, the thing we love above all others
“THIS IS MY FIDDLE TREE!!!” for some reason is the cutest thing I’ve heard today. The enthusiasm is wonderful.
Omg 6:08 That's me! Thank you for featuring me 😁♥️
I’m a gen zer who works at two plant shops and I have over 100 plants in my tiny apartment I just think they are so amazing all the different kinds of foliage amaze me I love caring for them and watching them grow (I’m also autistic they’re my special interest)
in case you missed it, it's because a) plants are one of the only things we feel in control of in our lives; b) we can't afford larger living spaces with actual outdoor space. oops
Don’t live in NYC maybe.
I know that I am interested in indoor plants, but I don't want a jungle in my house. lol
Lol lol lol
James Longstaff exactly
its just asking for bugs everywhere lol
Take care of your plants and you shouldn't have bugs. Unless you're releasing them yourself like this lady...yikes.
Try a terrarium
I've been orchid obsessed for about 8 years and I'm just now starting to get into other kinds of plants. I don't do it for social media, but watching other people with their plants does fuel my interest.
The thing about houseplants cleaning the air isn't really true. The NASA study that people cite in support is based on a totally sealed room. If your room is well ventilated, the air will be changing too quickly for the plants to achieve much.
There are many good reasons to grow houseplants though.
NASA tell too many lies, I need to do my own extensive research before I begin to believe anything they say.
SonOfFurzehatt I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who knew and thought about that update on that research.
Good ! People in the city need good clean air too
I am Generation X 45 yrs old n´ I love my plants

I'm 37 and I've always loves plants since I was a teen. I started off with orchids then flowering plants and now plants.
My grandpa have always loved plants. He has a beautiful garden and inspired me since I was little to take care of plants. I don’t think is a millennial thing.
1:48 I chuckled at how excited she was with that fiddle leaf fig, I'm exactly like this everytime I have a new plant!
They are more intresteting than people
I love Summer Rayne and Kaylee Ellen's videos are GORGEOUS (and dangerous if you've caught the plant bug).
I’m generation x and I love my plants as well. Always have. I’m able to do more now since my kids are older.
Come On!!! Every generation have loved plants!! Darwin anyone?? Duh! This kind of dumb analysis of contemporary culture fails to incorporate the historical context. It's honestly about highlighting the dumb culture of Social Media, how this generation choose to communicate through a portal. Plus be a Plant celebrity. My mother and grandmother were obsessed by plants, urm back in the mid-20th Century.
Next video, can be about "How many Millennial's love breathing oxygen!"
Will this new "breathing oxygen" millennial trend catch on? Click here to find out!
Ok boomer
People like plants because it brings the peace of the green outdoors inside
Speaking of plants. I went to a fleamarket this weekend & got 2 medium size snake plants & some other huuuge (excuse me idk what kind of plant it is) palm tree leaf plant all for $15!!
Dirt cheap. I’m in love!!
Going back this weekend to get even more haha
At least i am not alone, i have just gotten a house with a small side yard, and i have been obsessed with growing my flowers and watching my pants thrive. Yay
“Stay clear of the closing doors please.”.. brings in 4 more 8 foot plants. 😂
because there are unlimited sources and plants obssession is the best we can save the planet💚 must be thankful to plant lovers🍃
I started getting into plants because of my mom a couple years ago. Since then, I became a florist in a grocery store :D You can imagine how many clippings I have lol...
Wondering... what do you do if you travel for a longer period?! Having this many plants... is beautiful, but I wouldn't trust anybody to come and water them lol!
that Brooklyn apartment looks like my Puerto Rican garden, you go girl, do yo thing!!!
Her snuggling the plant in the end has me dead 😂😂
So glad Kaylee got featured too! I discovered her thanks to Jenna Marbles
Hey! Aww thank you ♥️
I love how she put it at the end. Plants are more than just your *aesthetic*🥺
