  • As much as I love The Good and the Beautiful for their high school language arts, sadly, their history curriculum was something we didn't enjoy at all! In today's homeschooling video I'm sharing why we stopped using The Good and the Beautiful and 3 things you might want to consider before trying it yourself.
    I posted this video because I got so many questions about why we stopped using TGATB and what we are using now. Not every curriculum works for everyone and that's ok. We switched to BJU Press for history and are loving it!

    " do you do tests? "
    No. Not at all. I measure my children's progress on conversations, a story they've written about things they've learned, seeing them tell others about it.
    I also don't stress like most people about having to cover every single era, my goal is to raise people that want to learn long after their formal education, im 39, in the 22 years since I left school I've continued learning things about History that I never learnt in school.
    I start with their own personal history, something that is interesting and relevant to them, then family history, local history, our country's history, and then when they understand how to THINK like a historian, not just read facts and dates, they choose the era or person or event they are interested in, and we read, watch documentaries, find activities that correlate.

    We have seven children and are on year three of TGATB history. We have really enjoyed it so far. My kids have remembered much of what they have learned. The games that come with the curriculum are really helpful to use as a review. I will say that I am thinking of using BJU this year for my ninth grader to make sure he is getting what he needs for high school. But overall it has been a good fit for my large family. Thanks for your video!!

      I'm always surprised at how much my 5/6th grader remembers, especially after the little audio portions! That tells me that she's completely engaged, which is a big deal as she has an anxiety disorder that can often leave her distracted. A traditional text book would kill history for her. So we'll be sticking with TGATB for history. I hate tests, and our entire homeschool/family culture is based around reading aloud. It definitely works for us!

    I've thought about using the Good and the Beautiful for history. I started looking at it and was immediately concerned. I couldn't understand the jumping around either. History leads up into the big events. You can study the American Revolution, Civil War, World War I, World War II, but what were the events that caused it? Same with any war or any law that is passed. There is a cause and effect that happens with history that I was scared was not going to be taught with the history.

    Sounds like a good middle ground between the two would be Mystery of History. It can be done family style, but also has traditional tests that can be used as well for older students. It too has 4 "levels” that are cycled through. It is all done chronologically and we absolutely love it.

    Good video! I do believe that whether this curriculum works for a family has a lot to do with whether the children are auditory, visual or kinesthetic learners. For a visual learner, I can see how this curriculum might not work. But for the auditory and even kinesthetic learners, this curriculum can be amazing! With all the reading aloud, it's obvious why it would work for an auditory learner but kinesthetic learners could sit on a ball, color, play with Legos, Etc while the material is being read aloud. I have a 7th grader who is a visual learner and absolutely loves history. I got the accompanying literature books and I'm allowing her to read those on her own and she's loving that. And for my fourth grader who is more of an auditory/kinesthetic learner, and NOT a lover of History, she gets to listen to me read the curriculum out loud but at this point I'm not going to read the additional books to her. I know the additional books can really draw a child in but I think for her it would be overload. We don't use tests in our family except for Math and spelling, instead we use narration. My 7th grader loves history so much that she narrates back what we have read whether I ask her or not. LOL! And for my 4th grader, narration is a good way to get her thinking more about what we've studied. As with any curriculum, this is all so individual and different things work for different families. Your video actually helped to clarify for me why this curriculum IS working for us but why it might not for others. Thank you for your perspective. I really appreciated it. :)

    I'm so thankful you did this video. It has helped me decide what not to use this year. Like you, I don't think I'd like skipping around so much, even though at first I liked the sound of it. I didn't consider how difficult it might be mentally to piece together a timeline, not to mention how history builds on itself. It would be very perplexing if you didn't learn what that one thing was that led to another. But I still need to find what will work for us. I really, really like Masterbooks The Story of the World. The problem I have is the worksheets ask very open-ended questions. The first few times I sat down to "grade" it I was frustrated. There's not many right or wrong answers, or fill in dates and names. Mostly, it tells me the teacher that the student should be able to convey (fill in the blank) or demonstrate an understanding of (fill in the blank). That's a lot of work, to read each answer and have to discern if the student "got it". Especially when I wasn't reading along with or to my daughter, I didn't even know what the "answers" should be. I finally gave in a bit and I started reading it to my daughter (I love history, so it wasn't a burden) and I allowed her to correct her own worksheets. She was 13/14, so this seemed to work well. But now we need a HS American and World History (It really doesn't seem to matter what order that's in).

      I completely agree with everything you've said and I've scrapped curriculum before solely for the purpose that it was too hard to grade. We used BJU Press for World History last year and this year my 11th grader will be doing their U.S. History. We really love BJU Press: www.bjupresshomeschooling.com/site/include.php?id=32_21 We do their distance learning for history but since you love history, you could also teach it to her.

    It sounds like your family didn’t care for the Charlotte Mason inspired approach. This curriculum is very CM inspired. You’ll find this style does require more from the parent. It’s not for everyone and I appreciate you explaining to others what didn’t work for you. We are a CM inspired family and we do many subjects as family subjects: History, Science, Geography, Poetry, Art Study, Composer Study, Habit Training, Foreign Language, Sign Language, to name a few. 😁

      Same! Also, we love reading aloud together, so reading the lessons doesn't bother me at all. In fact, I'll often add a historical fiction book to read aloud along with what we're studying in TGATB. It's definitely what works for us, though I can see why it wouldn't be a good fit for people who prefer more traditional methods of education.

    I appreciate your honestly! I am starting to feel like too many of the RUclips moms I love to watch push TGATB because they get some sort of financial benefit. Most of the curriculum has worked for us, but when influencers aren’t finding anything wrong with it I start to get suspicious. I have been looking for a new history curriculum for my daughter so thank you for the recommendation!

      Jenny Williams when I first started looking into homeschool I found Grace and Grit. I really liked her and how she said she was authentic, but the more I watched the more I began to question her platform. I have only used the lower levels of TGATB and have had no issues, but like I said it can’t be ALL good ALL the time. I just want a real review not some polished answer so that you can make some money. Plus she deletes most any comment that she feels is negative. That’s not very authentic in my honest opinion.

    • @RM-hl2cd

      Jerod Adair I didn’t say anything I find to be disrespectful. The point is ALOT of new homeschool parents come to RUclips for information which means the information influencers put out there should IMO be carefully thought out especially if they care about their community as much as they say. Some influencers on RUclips in every area of life let the money be the main focus and that starts to show, while others like Becky IMO keep it real and the money she may make from her channel doesn’t cloud her judgement. I was simply stating my opinion about where her channel is going compared to when I first started watching her. I don’t think we have to agree or like everything someone says just because they also homeschool. I have gotten some great information from Ashlee, but my opinion on her bias still stands.

    I definitely see your point for the confusion on time periods. Honestly I’m a product of Public School and the time line that TGTB offers is very much similar from what I learned in school. I do like that TGTB offers the time line. I feel like it helps bring things into perspective of what they have learned. I wish when I was in PS we had a time line of events. I very much have been considering jumping my daughters student explore notebooks up to the next grade bcs I agree that it just isn’t enough for where she should be and maybe the next level student explore would be more in line to where she should be.

    I specifically didn't want to do TGATB history because of the jumping back and forth in time, and the fact that family style doesn't work as well for us, either. I didn't want to be nailed down to that curriculum for 4 years, just to try to avoid the gaps in covering history! We are trying the World's Story from Master books for my 6th grader this year. It's a grade 6-8 chronological world history program, hopefully it works well for us!

    We started with Story of the World, then tried Year 1 from The Good and the Beautiful. Kids asked to stop just a few lessons in, just wasn't working for us. And that's okay! We gave it a shot and went back to what was working. We do love BJU for English and Math, once we finish Story of the World we may try their history. Or just focus on certain periods. I was taught history in chronological order. By the time I went to college, I was surprised how much I remembered. We teach art and science as family style. Love the video, thanks for sharing with us Mrs. Becky!

    As someone with a history degree I think the Good and Beautiful is good for children 3rd thru 8th grade. I have customized the curriculum by buying all four levels and making it chronological. I also use the timeline with every lesson. If you dont want to reorganize the curriculum using the timeline with every lesson really helps take away any confusion there may be from jumping around. For those of you who went to public school you don't really learn history in chronological order. You learn basic american history in elementary. Then you move into basic world history in middle school. Then go back to american history for more detail and the same with world history. For the TGATB I try to find at least some of the extra books on audio so there isn't as much reading for me. I also have an older child read some of the books to his younger siblings or I make the history books apart of our daily reloud time. From what I understand TGATB plans on coming out with a history curriculum that is exclusively for high school students. I will be interested to look at it when they happens but right now I belive the family style curriculum isn't suitable for high school.

    • @onka256

      This is our 3rd year and I totally agree on the points u made. I hate the fact that there are no tests. I use ducksters.com to get the quizzes. It’s free and the info is the same. I figured we will use a different curriculum in high school. The girls are in 8th grade now. And I also hate most of the worksheets it comes with from the student explores. I don’t like the coloring.

    • @lizb994
      @lizb994 4 года назад +1

      @@onka256 I have used some of the worksheets from easy peasy history and gotton some idea for more activities. With any curriculum there are going to be pros and cons. In my opinion there is no perfect history program out there and you will always need to add a little extra. More books, documentaries, or activities. But for the price of TGTB it's great curriculum that comes with a lot to use and maybe expand upon. Also I think people forget that history for 3rd thru 8th is about knowing the basics. You will relearn and add onto all that was learned in the prior grades in high school and eventually college.

    • @lizb994
      @lizb994 4 года назад +1

      @Faith Through Arrows you have to keep in mind your suppose to repeat the curriculum again. It's just like Story of the World. The idea is that the children will retain more each time you go through each level and as they get older will be expected to do more.

    I am going to have to check out your BJU review. I have some of the SOTW books. Read some and thought the description of an event was way too much for my young one. So we are doing TGTB. We are on H2. It does jump. I knew that going in but for the age range I teach it's like giving an overview. I do use a time line now. However, I do think once my kids are older, I will want something more linear and in depth. So I see your point about TGTB and HS history. Thanks for the idea.

    As another comment said, it really sounds like a Charlotte Mason approach curriculum where the testing would be the ability to tell or write (narrate) the items learned and the older children (5th+) would have a Book of Centuries taking care of any timeline issues. So, to me, it makes sense why this didn't work for you!
    I think sometimes we (homeschooling families) look at something (curriculum especially) and it's new and shiny and we get all starry eyed because it looks WONDERFUL. Then we try it and think "What a waste!" This is not to say don't try something different, because if you are having difficulty getting something down, you should try something different. Sometimes it is just timing. Just because a child is "supposed" to learn something by a specific time, as homeschoolers, we are able to be flexible. It's a different world than the 30+ kids that a teacher is expected to be teaching. Each person has strengths and weaknesses. ☺

    I liked your point about this curriculum jumping around...I have not purchased any of TGTB, but I think I am going to prefer a mastery approach to history, rather than a spiral learning method, which I can imagine would be rather confusing for a lot of kids!

  • @jessicaloveridge2759
    @jessicaloveridge2759 3 года назад +6

    I love TGTB for math and language arts with my children (they are both young), but I decided to stay away from the history as soon as I saw it. History is actually my favorite subject but all the jumping around gets rid of the cause and effect of true history. Also they tended to take too much of a Christian view of history (I a. Christian) in that they didn’t show why bad people made the choices the did. Human nature isn’t black and white so it is important to know why people make the mistakes they do to learn from them. Too much parent reading not enough open opinion learning. I will be making my own curriculum through elementary and then using a textbook like curriculum to guide or learning which I will supplement. I actually found this type of learning to rigid so you learn fact without learning how to apply the facts to your own life. History is valuable when it helps us learn from the past to be better today.

    We used BJU level 5 (History and Science) this year, will be switching to TGATB History 1 next year, and already changed up the Science to TGATB. For my ADHD’er sticking to the slow progression like BJU was so boring. I am excited to switch next year and mix it up each unit! Thank you!!! I got up this morning and went to order History 1 from TGTB website, but the site was down and giving me an error. Decided while I waited for them to fix their problem I'd check some RUclips videos to see what to expect from it. Side Note: We use Science, LA, some of their electives and Handwriting from TGTB and love, love, love them.
    I came across your video... and I hate to say this, but this video changed my mind. I LOVE TGTB... but, going back and forth between times in History, not a fan of that at all... and if there is so little content AND no tests (not that anything with TGTB has tests) it seems like a lot of wasted time. I will stick to using them for everything else we have been using them for, but try to seek out something better for History, I suppose!

    I'm only 4.5 min into your video, but I wanted to make a correction.
    READING:
    You said "there is very little if any reading required for your kids." Maybe you used a different GB history, but in TGAB history year 1 there is reading. On page 8 of the history year 1 course book under "Length of Lessons" it says, (paraphrasing) "each lessons takes around 60 min. This includes 20 min for a read aloud of your choice......OLDER children will need to spend an ADDITIONAL 20-50 minutes completing READING assignments and activities in the student explorer notebooks."
    Under the topic "Student Explorers" it says (paraphrasing) "to prepare older students for college....grades 10-12 explorers gives students major reading assignments and a page of projects and writing assignments."
    TESTS:
    I'm only looking at the course book (the teacher's book), so there may be more inside the student explorers. The course book has review/discussion questions at the end of most daily lessons. One could use those questions to form an official test. I've done that with Abeka before. A parent could keep all those questions for each unit and have a unit test or the parent could grade those questions each day.
    HISTORICAL ORDER:
    I will say that is something I am a bit uneasy bout, the bouncing around, but we'll see how it goes. My kids are older, and they know so much history already I think it'll be ok for them.
    *Simply Charlotte Mason teaches history chronologically. They don't have tests though and hardly any paperwork which is why we quit that. The history though was perfect!
    *Story of the World teaches history chronologically, but they bounce around all over the world. That was confusing for me.
    We haven't used TGAB history yet, we will be using this this 2020-21 school year. We'll see what we think about it.
    Thank you for your videos and I do hope you found something that fits your family better.
    That's what is so wonderful about homeschooling, being able to mix and match and customize to fit your child and family. I love it! 🥰

    • @aplacetonest
      @aplacetonest  4 года назад +2

      The 20 minute read aloud would be something the parent would have to read if the child isn't old enough to read well or old enough to read the suggested read-alouds. If that's the case, that reading aloud would be up to the parent to do. The TGATB website says "It is recommended that you read for at least 20 minutes at the end of each lesson. However, to finish most books by the end of the unit, a longer reading time will be required." I found that we had to read quite a bit each day just to finish enough chapters to complete the book by the time the unit was done. For me, that was just too much reading with every other subject I had to teach but you're right, it is amazing to be able to mix and max curriculum as needed!

      @@aplacetonest yeah, I read that. I'm actually looking forward to the read alouds. My girls are going into 7th and 10th grade, so of course, they could read it alone, but I really miss doing the read alouds. I figured that would be our time.
      All of their school last year and most the year before was on their own. 😞
      I just miss being with them.
      With a parent that needs a curriculum less parent involved, this may not be their best choice for sure.
      Have a great day!

This may change at some point when my oldest goes to higher levels but right now they will be going into 3rd and 5th this coming 2020/2021 school year. Both are still youngins! We have not really done tests yet. I looked into TGTB history before and while I liked the LA and HW and use it still, there was something about history that I didn't like and I never could put my finger on it. I hope you don't get too much hate on this video because it is your opinion but fans of this curriculum are sometimes vultures. I like their LA and HW, like I said, but to each his own.

    To help children cope with the idea of time and the chronology of the lessons we use a timeline and fit new lessons onto our timeline. Young children need a simplified overview of history while older children need to revisit the timeline to take one of those eras in history and go deeper. We also introduced a bit of science which showed how time can be like a strip of elastic, “one day is as a thousand years with God”.

    • @aplacetonest
      @aplacetonest  4 года назад +1

      From what I've seen of their history curriculum, slavery and racism is explained as an unjust act that's against God. As for their past mistakes, every person and curriculum has made mistakes. Even the Mormons used to exclude people of color from being able to lead others in their faith. A Mormon created The Good and the Beautiful so it could be argued, then, that we can't use their history either. You and I would be very hard-pressed to find a curriculum that completely aligns with our beliefs.

    • @bravofam13

      BJU's history curriculum definitely makes a point to address racism as an immoral and unjust act. They cover ALL of the sensitive topics and events with utmost respect for the damage caused, the lives lost, and the moral issues involved. Heritage Studies 5 was the most amazing history class and I was blown away about they handled such sensitive topics. Please look into a book of theirs, if you had to choose only one Heritage Studies 5 covers current political issues such as abortion, gun violence and gay rights. It also covers past moral issues like columbus and the treatment of the native americans when he arrived, the trail of tears, the civil war and slavery, etc.
