Yes. That strategy does indeed work much better for quieting a noisy class. I say that because when I was in college, I had a teacher who would do just that and not say a word. The class would immediately fall silent.
Do you think, Karim, that's because a teacher easily losing their temper would be seen by the students as a sign of weakness and vulnerability, whereas being a firm and assertive teacher, conveys a sense of authority, confidence and respect which is quickly picked up by the students ?

Novel teacher comes across like a teacher who teaches novels. In your context Novice Teacher is more appropriate. And by the way thank you so much for all you do to address the shortcomings of our educational system.
