This video is a review of the Yomikuni Warrior Tachi. The test shows it's quality, and this also proves that I do not in fact dislike Japanese swords. :)

Hello, folks!
There are a few comments in here that are curious about the word "Katana" being the generic term for swords, blades, and the like. It's safe to say that this is the result of pop culture and modern accounts. Lines can get a little blurred. So for those of you who want to know the generic term for sword, it's Ken(剣), as in Kenjutsu(剣術ーArt of the Sword) and Kendou(剣道ーSwordsmanship). Touken(刀剣) may also be used as a generic term for sword. While it consists of the Katana(刀) kanji, it also consists of Ken(剣), and the term incorporates both single and double-edged blades. Check with a Kendo instructor before going along with any literature you may produce that uses these terms if you're a bit of a nitpicker.
It is true that the kanji for Katana(刀) pops up every now and again in the names of other swords, such as the sword depicted here, the Tachi(太刀), as well as the Oodachi(大太刀) and even Nihontou(日本刀) which literally translates to "Japanese sword," and it is also true that there is a subfamily of swords that classify as katanas alike, but individual pieces of kanji are subject to change based on context. The further you go, the more confusing it might get, but by no means is the name "Katana" a generic term used to describe a sword or blade of any kind except a Katana(or Uchigatana).
Every Katana is a sword, but not every sword is a Katana.

Well thanks for the information, actually really useful information, usually you will see people give pretty bad information or just plain lies as a description of a weapon like the tachi or other Japanese swords.
It should be pointed out that it's even more complex than that, as words have history and you can't extricate them entirely from it. The word katana uses the kanji for sword (tou), but is pronounced differently and even *used* differently; the reason being that it evolved out of the earlier word using the exact same kanji as an alternative reading, and it acquired a different meaning as well.
It should be pointed out that the word katana is more typically used to describe a specific class of swords, and they are categorized to some added refinement, such as shintou (new sword) for a specific form and era in the making of the katana.
The tachi is another example of the same phenomenon, combining two kanji and pronouncing them in a different way to arrive at a new meaning, this time another type of sword - technically the direct predecessor of the katana - which came earlier in history and is defined by generally being longer, but primarily by some other differences, such as: the blade is typically more curved overall and its curvature occurs from further down the blade and throughout its length (it's not uncommon for a katana to be fairly straight for quite a bit before it starts curving significantly); the hilt is typically significantly longer by comparison and differs in construction as well (primarily how the tang is pinned to it); and perhaps the most remarkable yet most obscure difference is that the tachi was worn in a manner that you wouldn't associate with the Japanese: unlike the katana and more akin to other swords worldwide, the tachi used to hang from the belt, usually with two hoops and lengths of cord, and with the blade facing down - whereas the former is worn *through* the belt and its blade is facing up.
Also, Tachi lack the cord rap that Skal said he doesn't like.

The main differences between a tachi and a katana:
The tachi is longer.
The tachi came first.
The tachi is sheathed with the blade facing down rather than up like the katana.
The tachi has a more distinctive curve.
The tachi was a main battlefield weapon (at the time).
Tachis are normally engraved with the blacksmith’s name.
Side note: I believe that the brass flower is supposed to serve as the menuki on a wrapped katana handle to give a better grip for the sword. I understand if you prefer smooth handles as I do too, but I definitely prefer the tachi over the katana any day.
And given the fact that tachi was used with armor, for a man wearing gauntlets you don't even need a wrap and don't care about accessories.
Correction: the word "katana" used to refer to a particular model of sword is incorrect. If we're already going to start using the precise names of each model then the word you're looking for is uchigatana.
Another difference worth mentioning between the tachi and the uchigatana is how the latter has a milder profile taper towards the tip. This was done to emulate the handling of a tachi despite the shorter blade. This is also why 'o-katanas' (enlarged uchigatana) have weightier swings than a comparable length tachi.
You forgot that Tachi was a war specially weapon and the katana is more a weapon for self defense.

Use the traditional term of katana if you want, but being a pedant towards other people isn't going to get you anywhere.

A tachi is not merely a longer katana. The tachi is the sword that came before the katana. The tachi is slightly longer than a katana, especially in the tang, which is also curved in the same degree as the blade (in other words, the sword from tip to end of the tang is like a bow shape). Many tachi were converted to katana in later years by sawing off a potion of the extra long handle, to make it straight [the handle] and easier to wield. The main difference between a tachi and a katana is in how you wear it. A katana is worn at the side, tucked into the waistband (and technically you're supposed to use that cord wrapped around the saia [scabbard], but I never bother with it) and with the cutting edge facing up so that when drawn the sword is in the ready position. With a tachi this is not the case because the tachi was primarily a cavaly sword. It was hung from the belt in suspension, but from behind rather than from the side as with European swords. The reason for this is because it makes it easier to draw while on a horse.
In function there is almost no difference between a tachi and a katana; you swing around, it cuts things, it can thrust but it's not very good at it, and it's still deferentially hardened. What's remarkable to be is actually how similar they are, even separated by many decades. I have my own hypothesis about why that might be, and why the Japanese basically made the same kind of sword for hundreds of years.

Tachi has slightly better thrust because its tip is smaller than the katana but again its curvier blade make it also a bit more difficult
Tachi, the first early version of the japanese sword, was intended to be used as a cavalry sabre. It was used by mounted samurai one handed and in upwards moves in order to cut enemis on foot or other mounted enemies. It hangs from the belt with the edge downwards so it can be easily drawn from horseback with one hand, the other being used to guide the horse. If on foot, the tachi is also held with one hand, but adding thrusts in order to exploit armor gaps in the enemy, being the left hand used to guide the blade "holding" it from the backedge. The katana is a tachi sightly modified to be better used on foot, no as curved and not as long as the tachi. Because now the wielder has two hands to use it, the katana is handled with both in downwards cuts mainly, but it can also cut in all other directions because in a civilian context the enemy is just wearing clothens and not armor.
It is something similar to the roman spatha and the viking sword case, these blades are almost the same tipe of sword, but were used differently enough to be considered separate weapons.

I much prefer the tachi over a katana longer reach is better and truly just a better weapon in my opinion. Even after the katana became a mainstream weapon most high ranking samurai still carried the tachi as well which leads me to believe all the myths about how great the katana was, was actually based off of the tachi.
@@biggie4380 of course the katana of Edo period comes from the tachi, it is the same design with just some minor adjustments to some proportions. It is like the viking age sword, it is a rip-off from the roman spatha. Heck, some people consider these norse swords as spatha in terms of typology. But overall yes, I do prefer a badass war times tachi over the more comfortable to wear katana. I find them very short, while the tachi is, if you will, a “weapon for true men with hairy chest and broad shoulders”. Just quench said tachi right. Low temperature heating and only the edge… all that effort to make steel using an ineffective tatara kiln and you leave more than half of the material unquenched, which behaves like simple iron.

I took Iaido classes for about a year, until I couldn't anymore due to financial priorities. But one of the things we were taught was that the scabbard (saya) of the katana or any other Japanese sword would eventually become loose, due to constant drawing of the sword. What my teachers taught the class was that a Samurai would always have his left hand somewhere on the swords handle or Tsuba to prevent it from falling, as well as to prevent other people from trying to steal the sword. So a loose scabbard was a common trait to Japanese swords. What they would also do is tie the sword shut using string that was attached near the top of the scabbard, and untie it when the sword was going to be used.

It's weird to see people talk about weapons like they are art when in fact they are tools for performing an art, one that goes unappreciated and unexplained around Western culture.
There's also a difference in the shape of the handle. The handle of the Tachi has the same curve as the blade, while the later period katana's handle is straight.

i think the difference is that craftsmanship is, in most cases, permanent and may persist long after it's creator, so even if nobody learns to cherish your craft in your lifetime, someone might come around later who does.
a performance lasts only for as long as it is performed and is often forgotten when said performer stops performing, obviously video and audio recordings exist now, but those usually don't compare to witnessing it in person, additionally people often think about movie making and modern music as a craft, rather than a performance.

The Katana is a ground soldier's backup weapon.
The Tachi is a horseman's backup weapon. Additionally the blade is longer (because range is important when on horseback) and typically curved more than a katana. This allowed for more effective cutting and improved the draw of the weapon while on horseback. The curvature of a Tachi can vary greatly depending on smith and era.
On a side note that is a beautiful use of the Sayagata pattern. 5:48

@@Islacrusez You can't forge weld with a blow torch. Considering the tank size, I'm not sure you could even braze (glue two pieces with another metal) with a blow torch; solder copper pipes for plumbing sure.

Tachi, generally longer (then a katana), more curved (then a katana) and worn blade down from a hanging scabbard.
EDIT (upon finishing the video): i absolutely love this sword. While the katana has sort of wore off me over the years, the tachi never did. I still find its curves/blade geometry simply stunning. Always reminded me of a drop of water caught mid fall and then solidified. And this one is apparently a superb cutter as well.

Katana is actually a bastard sword, believe it or not it was made with that in mind but over time two handed usage became dominance.
Nodachi, kind of depends when they first showed up you can call them greatswords but shorter ones existed and continue to be use after a certain time period they're would probably fall under longsword,look up kage ryu for reference.
Well all this just proves I need to do more reading.
I'm a big fan of Japanese swords in general. But the katana is definitely not my favorite, its always been the tachi. The katana is gorgeous and has some great merits, but to me the tachi just hits the spot.

I'm glad you reviewed this, its so frustrating to see people comparing Katana's to Long swords when Katana's were most frequently used around civilians and indoors when tachis and nodachi's exist.

You made me laugh a lot in this. Im glad you review stuff with an open mind, even if you dont prefer or even like it. Also, i love katanas, and your opinion about them are very valid criticisms. I also dont like that stuff about tachis. I removed the flowers from mine. Most of the difference is curvature, and how it is worn.

Na not completly correct. Depends on the period the tachi is made. later tachis were very similar to katana to the point only the occation and the way carried disdinquished them. The tachi tends to curve near the hilt where the katana tends to curve near the point. There are tachi that are very curved, there are tachi that are very straight.

That is an almost Obsessively Well Made Sword, from the Large Clove Blossom Pattern on the Hamon Line, the cuting performance, the fact that the seller asked you what kind of edge you want on the blade (I guess they put an apple-seed edge on yours as it was literally cutting through those Tatami Mats like a hot knife through butter) to the Final Fit and Finish... Wrapping makes it so when it is what with water, sweat or blood you can still grip it very well. This is one gorgeous sword. The geometry is later tachi design, I need to check if they make earlier ones

Something that annoys you on the handle all the time - that's not nitpicking. Its like a spike on a chair, not a minor problem, a big problem.
He was talking about the brass flower, which is the actual problem. The metal loop at the end is just a little noisy.
Katana translates to simply "sword", and all types of Japanese swords contain the kanji for "katana" somewhere in them (if memory serves right). Much like European swords may have unique names, but are still swords- Japanese katanas may have unique names, but are still katanas.
It looks like the japanese language got multiple words for sword. Ken does mean sword too.
@@ancientz7547 The way the kanji works is a bit complex. There is a Metatron video on this very subject, which was recommended by someone else. I'd check that out if you're curious. I may need to review it again just to make sure I'm correct on this. His general argument was against people saying "well no this japanese sword has a different name it is not a katana" and the reason he disagreed was that the kanji to indicate "katana (sword)" was present, regardless of how the word was actually pronounced; thus, all Japanese swords are katanas- just like all European swords are... swords.

In the end it was the idea on the original Katanas and blades of it's family, that the fitting of all parts of the blade and grip are so well done and specific to the blade that the stress on the Mekugi pin is lowered but still holds it perfectly together.

Just thought I'd clear up the difference between a tachi & a katana.
The Tachi was used by the early Samurai (11th-13th century) & was worn on the belt with the blade facing down. It is generally longer than the katana & is more strongly curved, the curve on the katana is more esthetic & doesn't really aid in its cutting performance. The Tachi was generally less favoured then the katana from the 14th century onwards due to its weaker build & its length & curve made it difficult to fight enemies in the later styles of plate armour (yes the Japanese had plate armour, for some reason this community struggles to accept that). The Tachi was a very effective weapon for cavalry so it would end up being built in the same way as the katana, however its use was limited since cavalry became less dominant on the battlefield when firearms started appearing. It also was worn by officers & Samurai with elaborate armour. The katana was mostly used by foot Samurai but it could be used mounted. Both of them are secondary weapons, the Yari (in its many different forms) was usually the go to melee weapon.
