@@swimsvg1855 I LOVE BFT for it's experimental value. Don't get me wrong, it does also straight bang. But the whole sound is fascinating - to me it's a real show of creative skill for a rapper to slide on any kind of beat. That album remains fresh, even putting it next to anything to come out recently because it's like he just kinda jumped on whatever beat he wanted, beats tons of others would pass up, and made music with timeless personality and intrigue to it. It doesn't sit in the same pocket as other music of that era, because he wasn't trying to do a cohesive style that already had waves. So much around it was of its era and it diminishes their longevity more than BFT - it doesn't exist solely because it's what the times called for and can justify itself on its own, didn't need to lean so much on what people were already going in for to get acclaim. No argument that it represents a creative peak for him. But overall 06 is a far more inviting and accessible listen. I think they're equally well executed, but 06 edges out for me on not requiring me to be in one of a handful of moods to return to. It comes back to something I think Vince does really well. Dude really values the art of sequencing and providing a smooth album experience and it shows in how quickly they all go by, nothing superfluous and nothing spared, vibes on point but never lacking in substance. And 06 has a little more of that going for it, for me. It's not him at his most creative, but it DOES show more of the refinement he would go on to bring to the table more and more. He has this pride in bringing you an earnest, but fully finished and polished product. Vince at his most creative is nothing to scoff at - he doesn't get his due as a pure artist. But I argue his greatest strength is in his groundedness and command of subtlety.
Also Bob something to think about is that Earl hadnt dropped since I Don’t Like Shit in 2015, so seeing “New Earl Sweatshirt” was so exciting for so many people at the time because he was so elusive - then later that year he dropped Some Rap Songs which is so diametrically opposed to what was on that interlude lol it’s awesome
Vince is still an underappreciated enigma after all this time, definitely one of the standouts from the JIB zeltron generation. Saw him live back in 17 and 18 and it's like the crowds weren't familiar at all despite how many hits he had, he's had a crazy arc so far too
Some points on 'Run the Bands.' Not only was Jesse Owens an olympic track star, he was a noted civil rights activist. Winning gold in the 1936 olympics in front of Adolf Hitler, protesting the Nazi salute on the podium with his gold medal. It ties back into the overarching theme of black vs white and racial injustice of the song. 'I'm not the one' could be interpreted as a self affirmation to not get caught, but it is mainly used as the expression "I'm not the one to play with." Vince is telling people to not try anything and risking finding out that hes not bluffing.
Vince Staples is great at presenting a situation or topic without telling you explicitly how to interpret it. In his tone and how he approaches things, he forces the listener to choose the meanings.
FM! is honestly one of my top 5 albums of all time. solid 22 minutes of no skips with a concept done to perfection, amazing beats and raps with no misses on features. So glad you listened to this
44:45 u touched on something Vince talks about regarding his music, the dichotomy between the suffering and the beauty in where he’s from, Southern California
Great album of his! I really enjoy this from time to time. One of his best imo. I love Big Boy so I was happy to hear the concept and his involvement. It worked really well! Especially knowing it's not long form songs necessarily so all the skits and interludes are dope and add to it all. Again, great concept!
That bizarre contrast of life is exactly what it's like to grow up in the ghetto in California. It's beautiful and fun and pleasant and _terrifying._ People from other states don't understand how to read danger out here because a lot of times when people are about to go bad they don't act aggro... it seems jovial and then suddenly somebody (or multiple somebodies) is/are dead. It's weird. My dad is from the projects in the East Coast. His first day in Oak Park, Sacramento he was like "this is the ghetto? Everybody has houses and yards." That night there was a running gun battle on his street and he was like "okay this _is_ the ghetto." California was a weird place to grow up. I wouldn't trade it for anywhere else but it wasn't easy.
I've liked Rapsody since she dropped "The Idea of Beautiful". She's incredible and always has been. 10+ years later. Would love for Bob to react to her.
I think he's just really nihilistic towards a lot of the industry and media stuff. You'll notice he's actually a pretty private person. My main takeaway from interviews with him is that he only cares for genuine conversations/connections, making enough to take care of him and his people, and making good music with good longevity. I've always kinda respected the hustle. He doesn't strike me as your usual rapper ego, needing to be at the center of everything. He's on his grown-man gangsta arc, there's an implicit humility to him not acting like he loves playing the game when all he wants to do is make music and live. I think he might be one of the few to convince me he doesn't need the limelight. And that makes him more powerful than I think people realize with the position he's in. He gets to make the music he wants and give us a great projects consistently because he's not with the BS. And he can speak on things in ways that would compromise other people on his level. Nothin personal from one fan to another. I just disagree with you. I think he cares for NOTHING but linking up with dope artists, making dope music, and living his life. So many others in his position can't hold down that last part and lose the other two. Vince seems like he doesn't care because he's sane and so much of what's around him in the industry he works in truly is empty. Vince Staples is far too openly reflective and blunt to be living in a place where the things he does don't matter to him. It's hard to imagine someone who can express himself with the depth that he does would let that happen. He only focuses on the things that DO, which gives the appearance of caring about almost nothing. There's no way you have these kinds of musical accomplishments by not caring. Vince cares a ton about never pushing trash to people and the music is all the proof I need after seeing a couple of interviews. That's gotta be the number one thing I appreciate about him as an artist and a personality. You don't have to doubt the things he does care about, because if he doesn't care, you can count on him to articulate it effectively, with calm confidence and ease. He's one of those guys that doesn't have a taste for talking or explaining things unnecessarily, or baiting drama... just does his dirt and walks on. You get nothing from Vince Staples but occasional comedy, some thoughtful insights on the industry, and good music. It feels like something you can count on with him. He is lowkey the smartest rapper in the game... out on the layers beyond like, lyrical depth or Pulitzer-worthiness. And the fact that a lot of people don't see it almost serves as its own testament to that. He is legit just of too much intellect to be engaging with the trifles and it keeps people from seeing his true power. I think that suits him. He's a smart dude with a lot of creative ability, and he knows how to make and sell good music to the right people. I promise it ain't some lackadaisical happening. Listening to Vince speak makes a lot of other rappers seem like they have no idea what they're doing or what they're about, just by comparison. I like that he knows what he's about and does nothing but deliver. He will be here for a long time cause he's got that focus.
@@differentbutsimilar7893 lmao my bad I was making a joke I agree with you 1000%. He really is one of the most intellectual and self aware artist' I have seen. One of the few people who's interviews I will rewatch he really offers a unique viewpoint I always try and study him. perspective is everything
I first heard Vince when he was touring with JPEG and it was for this album. It wasn't long before I was through his entire catalogue. Gotta go through '06 when you get the chance.
"I'm not the one.. don't slip" means "I'm not the one to test, don't let me catch you unarmed 'cause if I do I'mma kill you" "Yanks" is slang for his set (YNNC - Young Naughty Nasty Crips), that's why he always wears Yankee hats even though he's from LA FYI if you're black and you're from out of town... don't wear ANY sports caps in LA. Don't wear any blue, red, purple or orange hats. They all mean very specific things you're probably not aware of
Hey bob! since you mentioned house music at the beginning I would highly recommend checking out 99.9% by kaytranada! Its a great album with good features that you would understand.
This album got a lot of shit from his pitchfork white as fans ass type. Glad you see beyond the fun sound and see the nuance of this album and it’s greatness. His best album imo
Yanks is not white people or cops. Vince's set in Long Beach Is Naughty Nasty Gangster Crip. They all wear Yankee hats to rep the set. There's a song called Ramona Park is Yankee stadium
Vince is a highly underrated artist. Not one of his albums has the same sound. I would also recommend Jay Rock: Redemption album. Highly underrated also.
Gotta give Bob credit though. Good balance between classic and newer stuff. And this with a community that probably 80% is -30 year old. Like in this one: he said he hasn’t listened to Paid in Full. And many more that should’ve been way highter up the list. If I were the dictator that is.
Really hope we'd get a Summertime 06 reaction, by far his best album in my opinion
Agreed! Should have been the first reaction. Soooo good
Big Fish Theory is his best album imo but Summertime 06 is definitely fantastic
I’m pretty sure he did do summertime 06 I think it got taken down

This is one of the funnest albums of all time, legit feels like vibing to the radio on a summer day
hell yea this album is so... well... fun!
Bob if you could throw Blu & Exile - Below the heavens in your list. It’s a underground classic and is just incredible with incredible lyrics
I love how the hidden kehlani feature is forshadowed earlier in the album
This album is so fun, just good vibes the whole time
Can't wait for Dark Times. It's probably his best album in years.
I first heard Vince when he was touring with JPEG and it was for this album. It wasn't long before I was through his entire catalogue. Gotta go through '06 when you get the chance.
Thanks for all your hard work bob hope your feeling better
Hey Bob! Any plan to checkout Saturation 2 and 3 by Brockhampton? I’d be curious to hear your thoughts!
Don’t Get Chipped goes so hard in the car
Super fun project. I rarely see anyone talk about FM!
All this Vince Staples is good for my heart thanks Bob🙏🏽
Day 1 of asking Bob to react to Blu and Exile Below the Heavens
Ooooh yes
HARD co-sign. That was the best hiphop album ANYBODY made in '07
Its 3 am
I‘m hell exhausted
Vol./9 FLICK FLICK
You HAVE to Review Shyne ColdChain Vol. 1 (His First Project...but my Favorite. Dark and Honest album.) and Summertime 06.
Bob dropped the motherload
Bob's beef with genius annotations remains hilarious
Ouuu ready for this ! 🤙
No Ramona Patk? For a sec I thought at last we getting close to Dj Quik but guess not. Thanks for Vince Staples though..
Although it probably won't get recommended much, Prima Donna by vince is a cool ep as well. Sounds like big fish theory pretty much.
The difference between this album and dark times is really cool to see. Very excited to see your reaction
I miss this hungry energetic Vince. His new project is so slow I almost fell asleep
Vince is one of the best, he doesn’t get enough recognition.
This album is one of the best rap albums of all time
i really love this album, feeling vindicated rn
