      probably not. This is only how HE does the mixing. You have to try it yourself, with your own choices/needs. So it's bassically that: tweaking the knobs, learn its function and really listen to what is sounding. There isn't ONE way to do this :)

    Your mix sounds really tight without falling into the trap of being overly compressed. I think your bass tone is particularly great. People often overlook how much the bass guitar in metal really fills the mix, often mistaking it for the low-end of the guitar tone.

    That superior drummer bus thing definitely helps, I usually do the fucking long way and delete all the drums except one so like kick, and then bounce them to wav and do this for every drum shell and then repeat, this takes forever and when I need to fix a part I have to repeat this, and then I eq each individual drum track, honestly this video saved me so much time

      It's a great tutorial, especially your technique on the bass group. What do you normally do with your guitar groups? Couldn't find a video for it!

  • @GrooveDuude
    @GrooveDuude 8 лет назад

    I record guitars in sections, usually. And it is a time saver! Also every section will be exactly the same. I usually do verse/chorus separately. But if one of those is very long, I will do the repetitive part in sections. This is also a great way to do some producing. Rearranging these sections can bring some surprising results.
    Rock on Pete! Great music! Thanks for keeping some variety in your videos.

  • @VinnieRoofthooft
    @VinnieRoofthooft 9 лет назад +3

    Actually with top down mixing, Nolly said he only takes the limiter off his mastering chain at the end before he sends it off to the mastering engineer. This because you start making certain mix decisions according to your own mastering chain, and once you take all those elements away, the song would sound completely different and you'd then be relying on the mastering engineer again to make it sound better which is a gamble.

    • @peteplaysmusic
      @peteplaysmusic  8 лет назад

      +Vinnie Roofthooft Yep, your absolutely right, I should have said that everything except the Limiter stays. Think that's probably because I've only just started using this method. Thanks for the correction :)

    Metal Foundry Superior drummer is definitely that noise. What I like to do is make multiple superior drummer tracks but have one as only the snare and one as only the kick, one is toms and the final being cymbals only. this way i am able to mix the tracks individually using the plugins on my DAW. This also allows for better audio control than what Superior drummer provides.

    Really great video! This will definitely help. I'm still having trouble getting a full, massive sound. (I don't have a bass, so I emulate one using a midi one, perhaps this is the route to my problems.) Everything just kind of blends together sometimes and lacks power. Could you possibly make a video on how to achieve this sound? Thanks!

    • @WillMaskellTaylor
      @WillMaskellTaylor 8 лет назад +2

      i i know im not pete lol, i have the same problem with bass, i usually put it through an amp sim and then eq it with some high end boost for more clarity/glistening sound of the strings to make it sound more realistic, maybe try that?

    • @almondlowe2838
      @almondlowe2838 8 лет назад

      distort the hell out of the bass so it's so saturated that the bass end attack is compressed and soft. then get it as loud as possible without the distortion of the bass cutting through and you have a huge bass end.

    • @Neo_metallum
      @Neo_metallum 8 лет назад

      Boost the guitars around 400 Hz for more thickness and 1k-2k Hz for presence (unless your virtual amp provides a button that serves this purpose). The bass is mostly the cherry on the top of your mix. Thats why I make sure everything sounds good before adding the bass

    • @nickalchemy6780
      @nickalchemy6780 7 лет назад +1

      Get a midi plugin that uses a library of real bass recordings as the midi samples. The best ones have multiple dynamic variations recorded for each note, and they have already been audio engineered to be massive. I use the built in library in SONAR, so I don't have any specific plugins to recommend unfortunately.

    • @checkerace50
      @checkerace50 7 лет назад +1

      I usually just clone the bass track and run one bass track through Amplitube, usually the classic tube from SVT and roll off anything after 400Hz then compress between 70-85 Hz. Compress the shit out of that but make sure it doesn't distort. Then the clone, I roll off anything below 600-700Hz, run it through Amplitube just so I can run the grittiest pedal on there and distort the shit out of it to make it sound like complete shit and compress the shit out of that. But if you want a big tone from your guitars, you can also sidechain them to another channel and run a reverb on that channel like a guitar room. There you can adjust the volume accordingly.

It seems a bit clumsy to just add a high and low shelf but, if you EQ and use highpass filters for the harshest and lowest frequencies on the individual instruments and use your ears it can work really well. • @peteplaysmusic
      @peteplaysmusic  8 лет назад +1

      +Eric Faries There's usually a function in drop down menu in the VST rack to activate multiple outputs. This is how I do it with Cubase and Superior 2 but the process is pretty much the same for all DAW's and VST's :)

      Yeah i'm trying to follow the tutorial, but i can't get it to work right in Reaper with MT Power Drumkit 2. In Reaper, i can insert new virtual instrument on new track, which then asks if i want to create separate tracks to route to. Which that part works, however there's 13 drum pieces, but it only gives me 8 tracks to route to and i can't figure out how to add more. Like, if you saw it you might understand what to do but i'm super lost lol

    Good tutorial! But honestly, i find FL Studio much easier than Qbase, litrrally you could get what its called, the FL Limiter, it does compression in the same time as peack control. And you can't have that in any other softwete. Serously, its just way faster and easier to do all this in FL. But I really liked your tutorial. Would be great to hear the whole mix after you compleyed it though.

    Very interesting. I had no idea about half the stuff you were talking about as I work with Garageband. I have been bouncing around YT vids discussing Metal Mixing trying to find tid bits here and there. I really enjoyed seeing how compression and EQ plays on each instrument. Any tips for an aspiring metal mixer?

    Great video Pete as always. Can you explain how do you get that guitar tone? Amp+mic? VST? Maybe i missed that part? if not, what did you use? Thanks man.

      +Fede Alvarez Thanks! Whatever amp you use, use a Tube Screamer style OD Pedal before the amp. Same goes for VST's use a VST pedal in front of the VST amp. There are some amps that don't respond well to OD pedals but this trick works for most types of amps :)

    Thanks a lot Pete, i've been doing my mixes following your guidelines for a while now, specially at the bass part. Never fails, are you doing anything different in that department nowadays? (The basa department that is). Thanks again man!

    I know guitars are panned hard left and right, but what about the bass ? Down the center or also panned?

      Down the center. He only has 2 bass tracks and he sums them as explained, so to have this technique with panning, he'd need 4 bass tracks. For modern metal where bass isn't that present, it works, but I'd recommend experimenting with it, I've gotten great results with double tracking and hard panning bass tracks on atmo-black/blackgaze type tracks, but it also sounds great for stoner, doom , and any other genres with present bass. Just experiment and see what works best for your style.

      @@DirtyAncom wait so are you hard panning the bass left right? Im trying to learn how to mix for doom metal.
