Mark is one of the few actors who embraces being known for an iconic role.
and that is why it was such a shame that Disney wrecked his character.

Its so insightful when he says GL only casted people who were already extremely close to what he wanted. -Carrie was truly hot headed and brave. -Harrison was truly too cool for school. -And Mark was truly too good of a person to turn into the dark side.
underrated comment.
Except Anakin, where even just a few seconds of interviews or behind the scenes is enough to see the actor is nothing like the character. Which just goes to show what a great job they all did
Based on some other interviews I've seen, being there to direct that first movie seemed like a rough part of the job and a bunch of the actors note his minimal involvement in giving direction. I don't know how much or how little he gave in terms of specific details, but based on that alone, finding such a spot on cast was probably one of his biggest goals.
This dude has been three iconic people in his life: Luke Skywalker, The Joker, and Harrison Ford.
And been part of more iconic series.

Including Princess Leia. He'd probably sound better than Carrie Fisher.
I would pay one hundred dollars for this
I remember when most everybody thought of Hamill as a one-hit-wonder who'd never do anything besides That One Big Franchise.
It takes a bloody talented voice actor to just drop into a guttural baritone like that while managing to make it sound completely unforced. Or to drop into the voice of Joker and make it sound completely unforced. And on top of his talents, there are plenty of folk tales regarding him just generally being a good bloke to those close to him, or even to complete strangers... I'm remembering a story about a restaurant server being really excited to get his autograph on the check because they were a huge SW fan, later that day he returned to the restaurant to hand-deliver an autographed photo. Now that's the kind of dude I'd like to have a beer and a chat with. Always nice to see Seth really enjoying himself with a guest too. :)
or steal people's money for FTX - haha
Here's a story for you: Peter Stomare made Hamilton 1998 with Mark Hamill. Hamill was supposed to do a scene where he jumped out and hit Stormare when he was on his knees (and the camera was behind Stormare).
Mark Hamill hit Peter Stormare so hard that his nose broke and bent to the side and one or ceveral teeth was punched out. Stormare asked the makeup woman to keap thr teeth on ice to save them and he blacked out.
Hamill never looked him in the eyes or said ”sorry” after that (supposedly because he might get sued by American standards if he does). He didn’t look Stormare in the eye in any of the premiers or said sorry. ”So Mark Hamill is a shithead and will always be a shithead. And is in my ’black book’ ” said Stormare in an interview.
He did destroy a plant of sentient cats that evolved into a warrior society that was locked in a 40 year long war with humanity.
When i was a little boy, Luke Skywalker was my hero.
When i became a man, I got to know Mark Hamil (through interviews) and he became my hero. No swords, no cool spaceships, no superpowers.
Just a warm, humorous, genuine seeming kind of guy. Everybody i know who met him in person just LOVED him.
And now I instantly see why Hamill became a highly regarded voice actor.
Only now? Not because of all his other voice acting rolls?

I remember when star wars came out around 77, I was a kid and I like others was completely obsessed, it was such a cool movie. I love all the actors that were involved. Mark Hammill is an actor, there are so many other things that people have done that can be characterized as heroic. Not trying to be a jerk, I'm just funny about that word. We need more truly heroic acts in this specific place and time other than what people are describing as heroic. That being said, Mark Hammill seems to have a very pleasant, entertaining personality.
He actively supported aborting his grandchild because the baby's mother was Asian. I can't get over that moral problem.

I know right. people easily deem him a bad actor but he did the best with what he had, and what he had was an extremely unemotional and undriven script to work with. I'm sorry people, but if the director is bad, the movie is bad. Actors can't save a movie by themselves.

"Hey kid, it ain't that kind of movie"
Proceeds to be treated like "that kind of movie" for the next half century.
To be fair, he had a point. If the audience is more attentive to Luke’s hair not being super dirty, they’re not paying attention to the story, set, or the dialogue. An actor’s first concern should be living in the moment and letting the crew worry about those small details. Star Wars was never supposed to be a movie that focused heavily on the actors’ appearance like Monster or the Machinist. That’s what Ford was referring to, I think.

Well to be fair, George hired him specifically because Harrison already had the personality he imagined Han having. So keep in mind that Harrison literally wasn't acting. He was just talking normally.
Even his famous scene, saying "I know" when Leia told him she loved him, was *_Harrison's_* idea, and he add-libbed it on the spot. The Script told him to say "I love you too" and he went "Yeah, Nah".

“Harrison walks in and he’s just too cool for school.”😂😂😂😂😂😂
HF actually _would_ have made a pretty good director. Did you ever see _Witness?_ If not, I highly recommend it. There's a scene at the very end where the script called for a lot of dialogue meant to explain the main characters' feelings --- "exposition", as they call it in 'Hollywood'. HF thought that the dialogue was unnecessary and convinced the director, Peter Weir, to simply go with exchanged looks and body language (which puts all the weight on the actors). The scene was more emotional than any dialogue could have delivered and has become iconic as far as film endings. If you haven't seen the film yet (all of it was great), then I envy you for getting to watch it for the first time. 😃

@@88feji I think it's because, unlike Carry, Mark only developed his sense of humor relatively recently, in the last 20 years or so. If you go back to interviews of him in the 80s, he's nowhere near as charismatic as he is now. Not that he was boring, but he wasn't as magnetic either. I'd say his charisma started to grow in the late 90s.
But hey, that's fine. I'd say it's even inspiring. It means you can still develop a funny persona when you're older.

Mark Hamill has such an incredible resume - I just loved his Frank Oz interview.
Mark Hamill is a legend.
And I admire the way he has handled the whole Luke thing. He has not scorned it - complained about how it has typecast him. And he - IMO - has not milked it AT ALL. He just seems to appreciate it, understands how much that role meant to SO many people and will go 'there' when it's necessary.
I know him not at all...but he has long seemed like a well-grounded fellow to me.
He had to suffer a really long stretch where he could barely get a serious part. Voice acting kept him going through most of the 80's and 90's, and well into the 00's.
@@romxxii Still, he's typecast, though it seems he doesn't mind whatsoever anymore. He's promoting a voice acting role here.
I really don’t think he has had much of an issue of typecasting. While in live action he is best recognised for Star Wars, his voice acting work is extensive, varied, and highly regarded. If you have a look at his filmography you may be surprised at how many iconic characters he provided the voice for. For example, many consider his version of the Joker to be one of the greatest of all time.
The man is an absolute legend. It is honestly difficult to name a major cartoon he hasn’t worked on in some capacity, even if you only count minor or one-off roles in shows like Hey Arnold, Powerpuff Girls, Ren & Stimpy, Danny Phantom, Spongebob Squarepants, The Boondocks, Gravity Falls (and SO MUCH more).
Let alone iconic roles like the Joker, Fire Lord Ozai (Avatar the Last Airbender), multiple characters including Skips from The Regular Show, just a mindboggling array of comic super heroes and villains, plus the english voice for anime such as Nausicca Valley of the Wind and Castle in the Sky....

I love how his entire face changes shape right from when he says "Hey"! I also love how enthusiastic he is. He is truly a national treasure, and I would argue that his role as Luke is arguably one of the *least* important in his career.
Harrison:I hate my films
Mark: so there was this one time recording a film I did 40 years ago, I’ve told this story a hundred time since ‘77 by the way............

Mark Hammill is just so cool 😁
I love Mark, he's so funny and not a single word of what he says is boring.
He made Harrison sound like Mike Ehrmentraut.
*"It ain't that kinda movie, Waltuhh."*
YES! I KNEW IT SOUNDED LIKE SOMEONE I'VE HEARD AND IT WASN'T HARRISON FORD HAHAHAHAHAHAH
Lol
Haha
...and right after this, Harrison Fords' reaction to this!

Love how real and naturally funny he is.
Lucas likes to cast people who fit their role, while Hammil was playing the greatest hero in the galaxy. Very subtle. Brilliant.
One of the most human people in media. Acts like a person and jokes around and is whitty and has fun and always keeps his kindness and considers every type person who may be watching this. Loves his audience and enjoys his fan base as much as they love him.
Too bad his Twitter account is a toxic waste dump of hate and anger.
Ya...... that don't make sense. And it's "witty" not whitty. I'm white-y!
@@JetEngine787 too bad you are just a brainwashed marshmellow...
Oooh, is that mark hamill? He’s so whitty.
What’d you say?
Mark Hamill is so whitty.
Whitty?
Whitty, yea.
You mean witty.
Yeah, whitty.
Witty.

You’re spelling it weird. Why are you putting so much emphasis on the H?
There is an honesty without ego
After he said George likes to pick actors that resemble his characters, I finally realized the extent of the resembilance between Mark and Luke
Me too!
I finally realise the resemblance between Luke and Joker.
Ah, hmm, yeah...
Ransford Flentjar They're both Mark Hamill! XD!
I see what you did there!
An absolute humble gentleman who prefers to deflect his accolades to raise up his co-stars and friends with both good humour and sincerity.
Very nicely put.
Hamill is how you show your pride in your work without being hung up on your ego. Every interview he'll rattle off quotes from his work with perfect accuracy and you know it's because he put so much effort into those things, why wouldn't he be proud? Clearly this man has enjoyed his career and his joy shows.
Plot twist: No one knows how Mark actually sounds like. His “voice” has just been a fake one all along
I think he sounds like Skips most of the time.
It still can't imagine Hamill in his youth sounding pretty much like Joker, and be really good at that. I know they called actors for a reason, but still.
That's hilarious:'DD
plot twist you're gay.
Double twist, the Harrison Ford impression was Mark's real voice, his every day voice is the act. All this trouble for 40+ years just to do a Harrison Ford impression on Seth Meyers. That is dedication to a craft.
At the 0:55, MARK HAMILL nails his HARRISON FORD voice impression.
Mark Hamill seems like a cool guy to hang out with
“Leave it to George Lucas to give robots better lines than me.” Even when he’s not the Joker, this guy cracks me up 😂
When Hamill goes full Joker he's genuinely scary... Like, the dude is a completely different person.
May the floss be with you!
Mark Hamill is the soul of Star Wars. He’s so passionate about it.
"'You came in that?' Who says that?"
My friends, every time I introduce them to a girl I'm trying to have a relationship with.
Man that was spot on lol 😂
NOT ONLY IS MARK HAMMILL THE BIGGEST STAR WARS FAN, BUT HE'S AN AMAZING VOICE ACTOR TO BOOT!!!
Mark Hamill seems like one of the most likeable guys in Hollywood.
Just as long as politics is kept out of the conversation. He is a rabid Democrat supporter. He shits his pants like Joe Biden when Biden met the pope if Hamill crossed paths with a GOP supporter.

just wait until he does chucky in the new childs play.

Such a humble and gracious man who is one of the most iconic characters in film. Great to see.

He's not just an actor - he's a *voice* actor. A notably chameleonic ones.
You should hear his Joker impression! 😏
I just love him. Such a great attitude. No arrogance just filled with joy and love.
I stood in line and was able to get into the first sold out showing of the original Star Wars and it was freakin' AMAZING!
I went to the absolute 1st showing in NYC. A day off from work, wandering around with a friend and we saw the marquee "Star Wars', got curious and walked over. Once we saw the poster, we knew we had to go in. There was maybe a dozen people in the audience. You know the rest.
When we came out there was a line around the block and we were just going on and on about to these people that they had NO idea what they were about to see.
"2001 is a stone cold classic, a laugh riot it ain't!!"
Magic.
I love that movie, one of my favorites. But...it...is...really...BORING!
It is boring. But it's also very interesting and beautifully made. My favorite Sci-fi movies are traditionally boring.
@@koatam by boring you mean no exciting action? Because something can be entertaining without action and ppl typically use the word "boring" only when it's not entertaining. ("boring" reserved for movies that lack interest beyond just action)
If, on the other hand, you prefer your movies to have action, then okay, that's fine; maybe 2001 isn't actually your kind of movie.
We're fussing over details here and maybe I'm wrong, just seems like "boring" has extra meaning
Best interview I've ever seen on this show.
@@TheShamansQuestion Yes, I'm just being hyperbolic. 2001 is a great movie, but it's not a movie I widely recommend. It requires a special mindset that most don't poses. Most people will find it boring.
Boring can describe something that lacks excitement, but It really is a joke for the most part making fun of this mindset.
