THE END OF SELF-HELP

  • It's time to apply the skills I've gained through minimalism, self-help, and self-improvement into an actual project!
(Apologies for the clicking noises - it's from the auto focus on my lens. I'll remember this for next time and make sure I put it to manual focus instead.)
This is reminiscent of my video on "the end of minimalism," recorded at the beginning of 2020 - • THE END OF MINIMALISM

I notice this in almost every video of lefie's: the titles all sound super clickbatey but turn out to be precisely what the video is about! I love this channel haha

Yeah I quit self help this year. Workout, journalling and meditation are the three regular non negotiables I came away with from the self help communities. Reading fiction and select educational non fiction is far better.

Time to stop preparing and just do it.
    Yes!

Not to get too self-help-y… but this was a huge point of James Clear’s Atomic Habits that stuck with me. Action over Motion: motion is planning, moving around and prepping and researching et cetera et cetera, but ACTION is acting on the actual thing you want to do. Motion can be helpful, but it all comes down to action, at the end of it.

100%. At some point self-help no longer is self-help if u don't apply what you learn and just continue to fill your brain with info. I banned self-help books from my life last fall and honestly it's the best decision I ever made.

"I am absolutely terrified to start this project". I agree starting is the toughest part. Overcoming that initial resistance is something I have struggled a lot with personally. Wish you luck on this journey and thanks for sharing these adventures with us.

I am so excited about this! Yes, you are exactly right, I can't relate to your projects. However, you are always spot on about everything. I don't need to relate to your specific projects because you convey such universal messages. I am a 57 year old divorced woman with kids your age! My life doesn't resemble your life in the slightest. And yet, most everything you say is relevant to me. This is going to be the kick in butt that I needed. I've accomplished many things and lifestyle changes. But, there are some things that I 've worked hard to gather the information and lay the groundwork.... why can't I just "take the action"? Well, here we go, I am ready! Thanks so much. You are a very insightful and kind human being. I wish you much success!

The journey always starts with taking the first step. And for me, the Nike motto has always been a mantra: Just do it! Go for it - you can do it. I suddenly realised the/a purpose of my art... it's never going to be put up at Christie's but it's going to become a family heirloom.. I hope! That makes me happy.

This is my favourite topic. Step away!!! Best thing I ever did was to dump all self-help and read novels instead.

  • @papermason

I was bujo'ing, etc. I still use lists, but they're cursory and fairly general -- I know what I need to do and how I need to start -- 1 tiny baby step, then another, then another.
The only books I read are how to such as knitting and gardening, cookbooks, financial and WW2 historical fiction. I read the local rag, and documents for work. No self-help.
Edit: I think I'll turn one of my tasks at work into project based learning.

yes same! I am a self-help junkie and have reaped a lot of benefits from them like you said, but today one thought just came up to my mind that self-help is just repetitive and subjectively biased mish-mesh of nice quotes and quick conclusions in classics and research so it's better to dig in classics or journals instead. I feel like it's time to graduate from self-help!

This feels so so relatable . Your videos act like a reminder for me to just do what you intended. Most of the time my preparation, although I think are pretty important at that time are actually just my way of avoiding diving into the actual work.

LIKE 👍 I am a great fan of Herman Hesse, though he seemed to have his struggles in life. like everyone ... so your points are very valid for me! Can you post a video about 'DISCIPLINE' pls. as this relates to so many self-help topics imo - like daily meditation, journaling, sports, awareness, you name it. "I tried it all - but lack of discipline ruins it all" (quote: myself 😆)

I'm so excited for this! I feel like this is what I've been going through by wanting to create but all the stuff I feel like creating right now isn't going to be applicable to me forever, so I kind of wonder if I should even do it, because I don't know what I would do after I sort of "run out" of needing to better myself.

The struggle is real. The reason I started making videos online was because of the inspiration and help
I received from productivity types. So I know it works, but I think the consumption of selfhelp is like anything else in life. Moderation, timing and mindfulness are in order to maintain your health around it.

I couldn't agree more! Self Help Books - I mean, tell me about it! It's not *self* help, for goodness sake, it's *them trying to help you* ! And helping themselves to your time and money in the process. No, real self-help is just that, working it out for yourself, your way. It's based on an ancient mystical art practiced by the indigenous Peruvians, which I call "Nimomashtic: the Art of Teaching Oneself". I'm planning on writing a book about it sometime. No, I absolutely agree: Put the goddammed books down, go out in the world, and see for yourself !
    TL:DR Ready ; Fire ; Aim.

isnt it weird that the things we need in time is evolving through same points around similar times? i am just like that, in a computer game, in which i need to collect all of the things around the space before facing the monster at the end of the chapter of this game? so it takes so ling to see the monster itself =) i need the same attitude as to attack it rather than perfection my skills..
