HDR at night, actual darkness, is a no brainer for sure! Same as in my own tests, without HDR, the image is very soft, dark and lacking in details, with bright things blown out. I never remove the CPL, even at night, its just not a practical thing to have to do, and thanks for your compare, it seems, it does not noticeably affect night footage. If anything, it still helps reduce reflections and glare.
Great job with the test! I was surprised to see how little the CPL impacted the dashcam's capabilities at night. I totally would have guessed it would have done more to increase motion blur or noise with the reduction in light, but the A119 Mini 2 did great!
I too was a bit surprised how little the CPL impacted the brightness level at night. I'm trying to finish up my A119 Mini 2 review (finally), now that I have footage from the A119 Mini 2 with the updated lens.
Nice work. In the last chapter of the video it appears the CPL Filter does not make the image any darker. Also, I saw a couple examples where the CPL Filter improved the readability of illuminated road signs. Wow, is the A119 Mini 2 that good at adjusting / compensating for the reduced light from the CPL Filter or what?
@@RetroCarGuy530 Would be nice if VIOFO allowed in their settings, as they do with their Auto HDR to set a time frame for its activation, to also allow independent timeframe setting for the EV. For example, the times HDR is on, have EV to +0.3 etc. Might help to compensate for the slight lower light with CPL on at night.
is there a way to use this dash cam as a rear view mirror (for example if I was hauling something in a pickup truck at night, obstructing the rear view). The image quality of the Starvis 2 is very nice
Using it in the rear window of the towing vehicle is fairly easy, but placing it on the rear of the thing you're towing would be problematic. The dash camera would have to be placed on the inside of the unit being towed mounted to a rear facing window glass, because this dash camera is not rated for outdoor use. You'd have to see if the WiFi connection would be strong/stable enough to allow you to connect to it from a phone in the front vehicle. The use of the "Live View" feature would have to be tested for extended usage since it may ramp up the heat / power demands of the dash camera. If the dash camera WiFi is enabled not used for 10 minutes, it auto turns off the WiFi. It seems like it would be a difficult solution at best for the purpose you want to use it for.

Best comparison video I've seen yet for this model camera. Great job.

Very helpful comparison, especially the polarized filter on and off. Thank you!

The CPL filter reduces the brightness level by only a very small amount. It worked far better than I expected with a CPL filter installed.

Interesting idea. Maybe @RetroCarGuy530 can do the test for us? 😉
