Sunday, 11/17/2019:
The story behind this wonderful ol' four-prop comes from one of my most trusted sources on matters in Earth's atmosphere:
This particular DC-7, N4887C (ship 717) started life with Delta in November 1957. She worked for Delta until 1968, then floated around as a travel club bird and eventually was converted into a tanker (in 1980 IIRC) by International Air Response. Note that she retained her original Delta reg throughout her entire life. She eventually sat derelict at Coolidge Municipal Airport in Coolidge, AZ, even having one restoration team work on her, only to be abandoned. It was only this past year that the right combination of people - enthusiasts, vintage aircraft restorers, and Delta folks - was interested in saving her. She was, unknown to the people starting on the project, set to be scrapped within a few weeks. After long labor, and having oil pressure and power issues with two of the engines, her first flight had to be diverted to Mesa Gateway. Eventually, a company that operates the last flying DC-7s in the US rented engines to 87C. After leaving Mesa on Friday, they stopped for fuel in Midland, TX, only to blow a tire - but they made it out to Atlanta the next day. A lot of this was kept secret for good reason, considering who the buyer was, and the Delta Flight Museum really didn't give the heads up until she was about two or three hours or so out from ATL. But this airplane was saved in the nick of time, or else she'd be beer cans by now. It was heartening to see Delta's fervor in bringing this girl back home to where she belongs.
Thus the story as I know it. Any inaccuracies I apologize for.
AND Thus is the story as I - Matt Cochran - know it. I advance you one (1) apology for any inaccuracy - Приколы
Ain't nothing like the sound of round engines!
Don't you mean, radial engines?
A rare sight. Awesome video. Thanks for sharing it.
Excellent 👍
Beautiful plane! Will be coming to museum to check it out up close. Thanks for video of her arrival!
AWESOME
Outstanding Catch Matt! N4887C has served aviation well but now it's her time to retire. Liked
Fantastic catch bro
Awesome!!!
So great. My Mom was hired in 1956 to be a stewardess for Delta. She passed away in 2015. When she retired in 2000 she had flown with Delta for 30 years. When my parents were married she had to quit but was rehired in 1973.
Beautiful classic bird! I'm glad you caught it! Nice and halarious video as always!
Very very nice indeed.Great job in catching her Matt👌!
Retired Delta. Awesome. I flew on these back in the day [passenger]. "Golden Crown DC7" Loved watching those radials fire [literally] up. Ramp stood by with huge CO2 bottles. Chatting with retired Delta pilot yesterday about this delivery. Fond memories.
Golden Crown is the correct name. The term Royal was used with the jet aircraft.
@@poppiarlin5612 You are exactly correct. I edited my post to reflect the facts.
CRACKING JOB, mate!! Always a fan of the 4-engine props... only time I got to fly on an aircraft like this (besides a B-17) was up in Alaska. It was on a DC-6 but the #3 engine ran too rough and we had to gate-return...
I can't wait to see this at the Delta Flight Museum when I come back!
no way that kid goes to my school lmao
First to like first to comment. Such a beautiful sight.
I Love 4 Engine Props there Kool!!!!
As a youngster I made many trips onboard The Company's -7's. It was kind of sad when they were phased out.
And then, there was Atlanta Skylarks. The folks were members and I made a few trips with them.
"Mystery Dinner Flights". The "real" mystery is how they managed to keep the bird airworthy. ATL Fire/Rescue used to follow it out for take offs, such was its reputation for blowing jugs. Nobody onboard cared. The adults got fueled-up at the reception in the old Company hanger before departure.
Used to sit on the ramp behind the old GO between trips and play birdhouse.
Wow, a long time ago.
I Love this ATL Airport Video By Matt is Kool fa sure!!!!
Wonder where they’re putting it at the museum
Thrilling catch of this aviation dinosaur Matt
On rented engines. Cool.
