  • After installing a new Rok Shifter engine and completely re-doing my kart's chassis set up, it was time to start working on the weak link in the whole system - ME! I looked around for a driver coach and learned that a good driver coach is a great investment in my "career". Join me as Pro Shifter Kart pilot Jake French coaches me up on the finer points of driving a shifter kart.

Hey Richard, thank you for the kind words! Definitely recommend giving karting a shot, if you have never raced, probably should look at either the L206 class or the KA100 class. Lots of competition, simpler to maintain, and much easier on the body! Shifters are extremely physical, you have to be in the gym working out on a very regular basis or they will eat your lunch...that said, they're a blast to drive. This weekend (July 30 and 31st) at New Castle is a huge SKUSA race with just about every class imaginable out there...if you can make it out there for a day, it will be well worth it for you as you try to decide if this is something you would like to try. Best of luck, let me know what you think if you make it out to Newcastle this weekend!

    Say "hey" to James F.!
Kudos, man ..... I'm sensing this is like landing a plane for the first time. It feels very tough the first few (ok, in my case several) times, but when you stick it, you know it and everything just gels. That is my analog to "slowing too much and downshifting" - when you stick it, it will become instinctive. Keep at it absolutely well said "there's no substitute for seat time". Practice, practice, practice ..... Is Jake telling you to more or less "trail brake"? Or, am I way off base?
I have a similar bad habit to come into a turn too fast and slam in the brakes, losing all my momentum. Great video, and good that you got help - I was worried we would have to do an intervention
    🤣

He definitely does not want me to trail brake, he wants all my braking to be done in a straight line. Still working on getting the feel for it, but basically-as I understand it right now-Jake is asking me to brake where I typically brake, and when I do go to the brakes, really apply them hard and then release them very quickly and much sooner than I would release them in the past to increase my "roll speed" into the corner. I was always of the mindset that you are either on the brake or on the throttle with very little coasting, but in this case, I may coast just a bit prior to feeding the throttle back on. It is a rhythm thing for sure...

@@RKSiler Ah, got it. I must have misunderstood the meaning of "over slowing" and "braking later" in the corner entry. Yea, for sure a sensitive left foot is required. Hang in there, man, you'll get the feel of it, no doubt. Other than, that it sure looks like the kart make-over has the legs to hang with Jack! Go get 'em.

Good video, but the music is distracting

Shifters are a young man's class. You would have more fun in Lo206 or KA100. Slower, but the racing is intense and very competitive.
