@@outtrigger Functionality before design makes the final product a better design basically, People alot smarter than us have already figured out many design flaws things like White text on Black is harder to read than Black text on white, and he's saying back in the day they had their priorities in order of how this works. Now days every one thinks they are thinking outside the box by throwing away the fundamentals people that literally don't even understand the fundamentals in an array of art forms think they are on the cutting edge or being different, original or edgy but in more times than not they are just creating shit, un appealing designs because they didn't understand or appreciate the rules before they tried to break them.

The logo has an embossed effect(there are exceptions to everything), and it cycles through a multicolor animation. As for the topic text, idk that's probably just a default option on OBS he put up last minute with no effort

A great book is Wolfgang Weingart's "my way to typography" there's also a book called Megg's History of Graphic Design.
Really good advice. The basics of marketing come down to grabbing attention and leading the eye, whether that be through color or layout or a combination of both. Look at that "your dad's closet" ad. Your eyes start at the top, you read text that passes over the image, forcing you to look at what they're selling (the image of an average girl) all while it says that you, any average girl, need to buy these shoes. It even changes the letter color when it mentions the product, all on a white background so your focus is on the advertisement itself.

I literally just read the text and didnt even give half the attention to the girl or "the product" in the middle, now what does that say about the design?
seeing some people talk about the white text on a black background thing. I’ve been training and working as a type designer and typographer at pretty much the top level for around 7-8 years. He’s not wrong when he discusses legibility, but he’s being reductive. White text on a black background, optically, requires being set in a heavier weight. This is only really applicable under, like, 20-24pt though. The type in the top right a few of you are talking about is perfectly legible and heavy enough/big enough that it doesn’t matter. Same time, though, the examples he brings up on google images right after to criticise aren’t relevant to his point at all.

The best part is how your channel page banner is literally white text on a black background that is obscured so much it is unreadable.
Sounds like what sammy is saying is that while art is extremely subjective and up for debate (this art is "bad", this art is "happy"...) there are still some fundamental rules that should be followed. There is structure in the arts just like there is in the sciences, the difference being arts are more elastic. This unfortunately means that every joe shmoe thinks he will be "different" and "think outside the box" and "challenge conventional artistic principles" by doing something completely wrong like white text on a black background and justify it by claiming that art is subjective and exists outside of any constraints. You dont have to, nor should you aim to, reinvent the wheel when it comes to art in general. Follow the guidelines and best practices that have been tested for centuries and proven to either illicit the desired response, or sell more of the product being advertised. Apply the rule of thirds, use complementary colors, create within the constraints of what makes great art great, and if you are a true artist, your skill and vision will shine through. Maybe once in a generation we are blessed with an artist or artists who are able to really break through it all and make something different or unconventional successful (Warhol, abstract, surrealism...) but that person probably isnt you.

I always get frustrated how some people can't take an abstract look at art, or photography, and just puke out the same crap with no thought.
I respect the introspective eye and off-center way to analyze something more deeply. Sam does know what he is talking about, and it definitely applies to car design too so I share his hatred of many new crap-spec pooper cars.
it is kind of infuriating to ask why people do or don't like something and their answer is basically "just cause"

They will pay 1 guy to manage the ai that will produce print and digital ads, website and social media and pay them 60k a year to do so because the person they paid 100k for their opinion, told them that’s how to be successful
Tbh graphic design will mainly be useful for individuals doing a small business. It’s probably futile at this point to get into art professionally (paying for college).
Lance Wyman and Kenya Hara are my favorite designers when I was in school, their work makes me think for hours on how they came up with certain designs.

Essentially, most designers nowadays strive for form over function. I'm guilty of this as well. The amount of design work shoved to your face these days are both intimidating and convoluting, and that pretty much leads to having tendencies to try too hard standing out.
Advertising is supposed to be the "eye-catcher" industry, primarily; and Graphic Design became a slave to this essence that is not its primary role.
But let's be honest, with our amount of exposure and digital proximity to high quality work, functional design will almost always be shoved down the rug in favor of eye candies.

Breaking rules is important to innovation, but you can't start making shit up that breaks the rules and expect it to look good. Learn the fundamentals first, what is pleasing to the human eye. Then you know what rules to break, when, and why. If there is no purpose behind the design elements, it's a shity design.

I'm a huge MDE fan, but can you imagine the level of person, who takes Sam's advice on almost anything. The way he authoritatively comments, on literally every topic that comes up, even though he clearly knows little to nothing about it, is getting annoying.
99% of Artists have never made a dime from their work. Sam created a cult classic tv show with an average 900,000 viewers per episode, & still makes a living off his work years later. Why would you choose not to listen to his advice?

I think allot of his takes are just “locker room” philosophy, he says common sense things and tries to expand on it. I believe these kinds of things were his discipline in college though. Regardless, it’s up to individuals to understand the nuances of art or life, asking their favorite streamer won’t help none.
