Azathoth is not the Supreme Being of the Cthulhu Mythos

- In this video I go over several characters from the Cthulhu Mythos, in particular Azathoth and explain why he should not be considered it's supreme being. As well as discussing his connections with Mana-Yood-Sushai and the place that Yog Sothoth fills in the verse in relation to Azathoth.

Short version: Azathoth is the biggest threat to life in *this* universe. Reality is a lot bigger than that
Wrong. He’s above yog sothoth who encompasses realms beyond infinite multiverses and dimensions.
@@azzydreamurr5677 perhaps he surpasses him in single universes, such as an unlucky amalgam but isn't strong enough to take out the entire multiverse, you sacrifice some strength in order to take control of the entire multiverse
@@Link1213. no he’s above yog entirely
@@Link1213. what are you talking about? a fodder like hypnos is above the first gate which is implied to be comprised of an endless recursion of greater metaphysical hierarchy that completly beyond the concept of all dimensions, transcends multiverse which has uncoutably infinite numbers of higher dimensions, each universe extend infinitely in all directions, of which there are an infinite number in each universe, and higher dimensions have a definite qualitative superiority over lower dimensions. These infinite-dimensional universes in and of themselves are merely atoms in a greater cosmos, which makes up one higher level in a fractal of realities, all objects corresponding to that dimensionality are merely infinitesimal cross-sections of objects in the next dimension up, and this chain goes upwards to "archetypal infinity."
P. S. the intuition here is that in higher dimensions, volumes of spikes thin out much quicker as we decrease their radius. Think about triangles versus cones. If you hold the height of a triangle constant and make its base smaller and smaller, the area changes linearly. But if you hold the height of a cone constant and make the radius of the base smaller and smaller, the volume (which depends on the area of the base) depends on the radius like r^2. So as we make r small, the volume of the cone goes to zero way faster than the area of the triangle did.

Sounds like the real Supreme Being was the friends we made along the way. 😏
In all seriousness, mind blown. I'd always wondered why Lovecraft had preferred to call it the Yog-Sothothery. Had explained it away as "Yog isn't a blind idiot, so he'd be keeping tabs of everything," rather than "Yog was the absolute supreme being itself".

Ive always been surprised why there is such a distinction among some when it comes to spliting the cthulhu part of the mythos from the dreamlands parts, like they are different things. Even tho characters, locations and deities are mentioned in both AND dreams are a huge part of pretty much all of lovecrafts writting its basically his magic system. Very strange.
Because they're basically written in different genres.
Most of Lovecraft's Cthulhu stories are very dark scifi, while the Dreamlands cycle is mostly whimsical fantasy, with only few dark elements present.
I think people make the distinction because that more fantasy-like quality of the Dreamlands tends to remove some of the horror of it all, and they prefer their Cthulhu-stories grounded in reality and the ephemeral stuff only be dark and threatening. I don't think it works quite like that, though.
@@Tacklepig ah yea that could be one explanation. Tho id still say alot of the dreamcykle do still touch on the themes seen in alot of other Lovecraft works. Loneliness, nihilism, the fear of death, lost youth that kinda stuff

Honestly I prefer the misconception to the text, the idea of a sleeping god manifesting all of reality through their dreams, that we desperately and selfishly try to keep asleep to extend our existance which would simply and unceremoniously just end if it were to ever wake is just more interesting to me than yet another mindless destructive force of nature
Agree so much
i'm already bored of this version, i already heard it from "the elder scrolls" with Godhead. i guess the inspiration don't come from nowhere but i would prefer if it's not from the Cthulhu myth. a dream would only lessen the "chaos" feeling from this myth.
I disagree, as for us to have an actual concept of a creator deity makes lovecrafts universe less Eldritch - creator deities are a human idea, and to humanize the universe de mystifies the infallible.
@@dylanschmeichel2008 It still leaves a lot of open questions that I feel separate it from this issue, it implies that our world is in itself a dream existing in another world. We thought we were at least lice in comparison to the old gods but in reality the old gods were simply the passing thoughts of something far greater, and the implication is there is this entire alternative "real" world in which this being itself could be among the lowest of entities.
When we talk about an "Eldritch" universe, the last thing I want more of is giant hulking monsters on a trail of destruction, I want complex and strange creatures with unknowable intentions (and therefore completely unpredictable actions). A lot of the old gods that were written are either too human or too beast, which makes them understandable which removes the intrigue
I kinda disagree because stories like that tend to always stagnate.

Finally, someone with a platform telling everyone that the "It's all just Azathoth's dream" is not cannon Lovecraft. I don't have a problem with the theory, but too many people think that once they hear the theory, they think they understand the whole mythos.
I personally think the dream theory is too simple and too mundane. The universe being something we can easily understand and can relate to, seems very un-Lovecraftian to me.
Having Yog-Sothoth as a more powerful being being makes sense, because even when you get an explanation of what it is it is still esoteric and incomprehensible. The more all powerful a being gets the less comprehensible it should be in a Lovecraftian mythos.
The dream thing is still weak. To believe that and still say that Azathoth is greater than Yog is foolish. By Yogs' description, he seems like he is Azathoths' subconscious mind. In a way, that would make him more or less greater than azathoth (kinda).
In any case, Azathoth would obviously wake up *to something else* so he isn't the all encompassing existence. Neither is Yog but his description clearly puts him on top in such a scenario.
@@Trollamollex lmaoo yog sothoth was literally stated to be everything in the verse.
Lovecraft was so vague that it really isn't certain how powerful his version of Azathoth was, which was his goal as he focused on the fear of the unknown. I'll break it down.
We know that Azathoth was powerful enough to demand Nyarlathotep's servitude (though begrudgingly) and for several other gods to devote their entire existence towards keeping him at bay, that's about it.
If he IS weaker than Yog-Sothoth, it's clear he surpasses all of Lovecraft's other published creations in terms of power (who would serve him if he didn't).
My take? There isn't much given as to what Azathoth's actual power is, and that's exactly what Lovecraft wanted to do with him. Like Pandora's Box, he is capable of bringing untold havoc, but nobody can know what that havoc is until it's too late... Nobody except Yog-Sothoth, that is.

My view was always that Azathoth, Yog Sothoth, and Shub Niggurath were pretty much equal facets of the primal aspects of reality, and Azathoth was only placed above the other two because he represented entropy and the end, which implied that even the other two would succumb to it eventually.
But this blatantly untrue. Yog-Shototh, as discovered by Carter, is everything. Yog-Shototh is the transcendental force that empowers all existence; allowing existence to, well, exist. Without Yog-Shototh there would be nothing. No Azathoth, no Shubniggurath. Nothing. Why? Because Yog-Shototh is everything.
@@BlankEmporium Well, that's your opinion, but Yog Sothoth was born from Azathoth, through the Nameless Mists, so the opposite is actually true. Without Azathoth, Yog Sothoth would never have been. This is from Lovecraft himself in his Selected Letters. And while Yog Sothoth is the embodiment of all space and time, even space and time end and die, which is the domain of Azathoth.
@@Blackferret66 Yog-Shototh isn't the embodiment of anything. He's everything. He's not an avatar, or some physical concept. He's everything.

Sure, Howard wrote Azathoth is Yog-Shototh's grandfather... As a joke... To a friend... Who claimed to be a literal Demigod.

I found this channel by pure coincidence and have no idea what is being talked about but I now want to read Lovecraft.
I myself ever since i got into the Mythos believed Yog Sothoth to be a greater force than Azathoth, based purely on what we're told of the multidimensional being of Yog Sothoth, and being those dimensions themselves, part of time and space but also locked out of it at the same time at higher planes. Yog Sothoth is also a primordial intelligence, being one of the few intelligent elder gods along with Nyarlahotep, but being infinitely more wise, being connected with time itself. This isn't to say Azathoth is far below him, they are really opposites, Yog is all knowing and all being, while Azathoth is, well, the blind idiot god and all consuming. There is some dualism with the two. While I personally do believe Yog to be greater, they're still two opposing cosmic forces that shape everything there.
He is powerful but never forget this is all Azathoth's dream, he is just one fake being like the rest of it all in the mythos for when Azathoth wakes it's all over which leads me to my point; Azathoth is far above Yog as he is the unwitting creator of all of these powerful beings although he does not directly influence the multiverse which would require him to be sentient(awake) and therefore end the dream and all of this.
@@habadobobado9729 Azathoth's dreams are specific to the physical universe and the Dreamlands. The First Gate transcends Azathoth. Like, in all of fiction? There are plenty of more powerful characters in fiction due to Yog still being treated as a character in a multiverse. Any author level power would outrank it due to being a creature that theoretically can affect the non-fictional world. For instance, even Deadpool can just rewrite himself to be more powerful than Yog and even make killing him have no adverse effects on the reality that Yog IS.
Going away from the more meta levels that comics do, there are plenty of characters that defeat manifestations of reality or omnipotence, especially in anime or other east asian inspired mediums. The protagonists from persona 5 kill capital G God, and Saitama from One Punch Man effectivly has the super power of being unbeatable. For that matter, any character with Toon Force or other comedic abilities like Bugs Bunny or Bobobo would also be able to beat him.
I guess in short, since he is still just a fictional character, there are plenty of other fictional characters that have the ability to defeat all other fictional characters, so long as the writer desires. Which is honestly less of a cop out than it sounds

Saitama never had the power to be unbeatable though.
He is a gag character, but his gag is vastly misunderstood by people because they never take the time to check if their own interpretation is correct.
The gag isn't that he is able to one-punch anyone, it's that he is a "end of series" protagonist put at the very beginning of his own story, as said by the author himself.
Of course this creates the side effect of him not having anything else to accomplish anymore and being able to one-shot anyone in *his verse* for now, but that's just like if you put Hokage Naruto up against Zabuza, or Ultra Instinct Goku against the Red Ribbon Army. Both of these characters would easily solo the verse up until they respectively arrive against Kaguya and Jiren, but it doesn't mean they can't lose or can one-shot anyone.
That's just a side effect and not the gag in and off itself.
And at the end of the story he'll finally find a worthy opponent anyway.
Saitama would easily be beaten by a bunch of people from other Shonens since he doesn't have any feat higher than Small Planetary.
And even then, even if he were to be able to beat anyone in one punch, it doesn't mean he can't be defeated.
You're two levels deep in the misinterpretations of Saitama's abilities.
If Saitama can't land an attack on his opponent he can't win. A bunch of characters have durability negation.
He can even be sealed, or erased, or teleported away.
Saitama is nothing special.
Meta Fiction is still 100 % fictional
and could actually be a antifeat
Because Verses with Metafiction is Fiction within Fiction
While Verses without are not a Story within the story making any being from a Verse without Metafiction infinitly more powerful than any with

With strange aeons, even Death may die
While i would agree that Yog is greater then Azathoth i would add that Azathoth is described as more destructive kinda like a cancer festering in the complete beign of Yog-Sogoth it gives them a nice duality imho.
Yog cant get rid of Azathoth because he as everything is part of him.
And Azathoth could not consume Yog because then he would consume all of space time and beyond and therefore himself
What's the music in the background? Seems like a remix of something familiar but can't put my finger on it.
Warhammer 40,000 Mechanicus OST - Dance of the Cryptek.
Check out that entire OST. It slaps.
As soon as I recognised the song, I had to pause the video, then find and play the song out. Lastly, for a review of the game: Mandalore Gaming - Mechanicus.
What is the background music? Sounds so familiar, but I am not sure since it is hard to make it out.
So the world of Lovecraft is a Neoplatonic one with Yog Soggoth as the idea of the Good?
Or Schopenhauerian with Yog-Sothoth as the Will.
Just a reminder, that the Multiverse exists in the Cthulhu Mythos. It irritates that I forgot which story that I read it from but my point is, there's a lot of potential of many more powerful beings in the Cthulhu Mythos. You may take this with a grain of salt and I also did myself since I forgot which story it was from.
Azathoth and Yog-Sothoth both exist beyond the reaches of dimensioned space, which the multiverse is very much tied to.
the background music is dope!!! what is that song? reminds me of warhammer 40k mechanicus soundtrack...
I have a question: what is your take on the Fungi From Yuggoth poem that Lovecraft wrote? The one where it does mention Azathoth dreaming and the Flute-playing Outer God's music combining with...something to create the cosmos' eternal laws? Do you think it provides solid evidence for the Azathoth dreams everything crowd, or do you think it's just a way to artistically describe Azathoth's mindlessness by pointing out he can't understand even his own thoughts and dreams?
Also, I don't want to sound entitled, but are you still working on the next Cthulhu Mythos video about the Great Old Ones? Cthulhu is one of the most enigmatic figures in all of powerscaling, and I am dying to hear your take on him. I hope you are still planning on doing that video, but I understand if don't have the time or drive to do it right now.
Man, I always thought the whole dreaming entropy god was canon. I'm still gonna use it though because it is cool as fuck, but I'm glad to actually know about this!
That title got me shook ngl
Can you share the name of the music in this video?
I love the mechanicus background music
God this is so cool to listen to
I’m big on the Cthulhu mythos but haven’t actually read many books so what a revelation it is that not only is the family tree is wrong but azathoth isn’t even as powerful as some deities in the mythos
read the actual stories.
Azathoth is above everyone besides yog (archetypes and avatars)
You can argue he's the strongest in cm but yog has more evidence
Part of me thinks that Azathoth acts as a sort of cosmic "engine" for Yog's universe/multiverse, Aza has no thoughts of his own and what he creates is managed by Yog and Nyarlathotep
exactly. Azathoth is akin to the Greek myth of Chaos.
Nice Barnes & Nobles edition of Lovecraft writings. I bought that as well and it's worth every cent spent on it.
This is a great video. You really convinced me that Yog Sothoth is a better candidate for the Cthulhu Mythos supreme deity. I have to admit I was reluctant and fairly married to the Azathoth dreaming the universe theory. Do you know the source of the "Azathoth dreaming reality and being kept sleeping with music" theory? I feel like everything that I was certain of is wrong, lol. Seriously though great video. I would like to track down the source of the popular debunked theory.
