  • Bergen had a small traditional street tramway which closed in 1965. In the same year, electric commuter trains in to the city were withdrawn. Bergen’s modern tram -the Bybanen- opened in stages from 2010 to 2017, linking the city centre and train station with the airport at Flesland. The line is a standard gauge street-level light rail system with segregated tracks, some laid in grass, and several tunnels. The trams are low floor bi-directional Stadler Variotrams, originally supplied as 5-section trams but already extended with 2 extra units; station platforms were built with this in mind.
Surprisingly for a country with “green” credentials, there was political opposition to the project, mainly from the car lobby who objected to road taxes being used to finance public transport. Also, the government’s intention was to stimulate development along the route, but local people were wary of changes to the local character.
In July 2017, approval was given for the construction of a second modern tramway. Bergen also has a short heritage tramway in the Mohlenpris district, using second-hand Gotha trams from Berlin operated by tram enthusiasts.
