    I've had the CDX since Christmas of '95 when I was 9 years old. The Sega CD only worked for about 14 months and stopped. The Genesis still works great to this day.
    I'm interested in hiring someone who may be willing and able to repair and "tune up" my CDX. I've had it for so long and I have many fond memories of the short time when I could rent and buy Sega CD games. If I could play my original console again, it would be amazing.

      mine worked till i took it apart and painted it (dumb kid) in the early 2000s, i ended buying another some years ago. the CD worked but scrapped. it probably needs an overhaul. any ways you might hit up Q's Tech Service, he is on youtube too but, the poor guy is so busy. with consle that rare, i'd track the package (you will have to mail it out) with an air tag.

    Always wanted one of these since I first saw them in old video game magazines like EGM. Might pick one up and fix it for the nostalgia 🤔

      It a great little unit, and for that time in the 90's, it was a well engineered console, you can see shades of what they did with the Saturn because of the CDX, from a design standpoint. Prices on Ebay are inflated. If you can find a unit that is functioning 300-350 is the going value. I always try to find a seller willing to take an best offer. A broken unit to fix would be between 150-200. I hope this helps and thanks for stopping by.

    My CDX spins a little, tries to read the disc, and then gives up with a "No disc loaded" error. I sent it to a friend of mine who recapped it (as a pre-emptive measure since they would probably start leaking sooner or later), replaced the battery, oiled the bar that the laser moves back and forth on, and swapped out the original laser with 5-6 new lasers he ordered, but none of the new lasers fixed the issue. He left the pot adjustments at their factory set levels because one of the few repair documentation he found online said not to mess with them. BTW, if you're replacing the laser, wouldn't they have to be at the same factory settings since adjusting them as you said is only a temporary fix (and I'm guessing all new lasers should work at the pots' original factory settings)?
    I was thinking maybe it was the motor but my friend thinks that if it was the motor, it would not spin at all. I'm the original owner of mine since 1995 and it stopped working near the end of 2011. I would love to get it fully working again. The Genesis portion has always worked without issues. It's just that Sega CDs and audio CDs no longer work on it.
    Would you have any other ideas that could be the issue?

    • @remagelosnoc
      @remagelosnoc  3 года назад

      so the pots really don't have a factory default, each laser gets tuned specifically so when you replace the laser, you do have to fine tune the pots a bit. Back in the days each laser that came out of manufacturing were not identical. If you opened up 2 different CDX, each unit will have the pots in different positions at factory default because it was fine tuned to that laser that was installed. It's a pain in the ass to tune the pots, but the best way would be to use a multi-meter to measure the resistance and test it in increments as you adjust the pots. The motor won't spin up if no data is read from the laser, so many times people confuse the spinning of the disc at low speeds to a bad motor. I hope this helps.

      @@remagelosnoc First off, thanks for the reply, I really appreciate it.
      I wanted to ask if you would know if an untuned laser could cause the CDX to act in the same way that a dead factory tuned laser would cause it to act.
      Once it stopped playing disc games, my CDX would spin a little, try to read the disc, spin a bit more and after about 20-30 seconds of that give up. This happened with the original laser once it stopped playing discs and happened even when the laser was replaced with 6 different lasers. I believe the pot settings were the same when the replacement lasers were swapped in as they were with the original laser. It's made both me and the friend I sent it to wonder if the original laser was ever the issue.
      Maybe the new lasers weren't getting enough power from the pot settings to properly read the discs, making the CDX act the same way a dead laser would? I know there's a decent chance due to lower QC standards that current replacement lasers ordered are dead on arrival, but I'd have to think that at least 1 out of 6 lasers he swapped in would be working.
      Thanks again and take care. Looking forward to your reply.

    I have a CDX with an odd issue. It will only display a black screen and will not play games, however it will play audio CDs, again with a black screen. Any ideas?

      Have you recapped the CDX, some capacitors will fix video issues. Also have you tried another AV cable just to make sure it’s the unit.

    Question. The one I have shows the Sega CD title but it wont spin the disc. The lazer is in the middle and I can see it moving a little but thats all. What should I do next? Thanks

    • @remagelosnoc
      @remagelosnoc  3 года назад

      does your CDX spin the disc at all, try to put a music cd in to see if the disc spins. if it doesn't then there is an issue with the spin motor or it could be that the laser is bad and can't focus to read enough data to tell the motor to spin up more. Let me know how your CDX responds to a music disc.
