I suspect many new players place their capital in a corner not so much because they want to use it defensively, but because they think it's something to be defended, like the flag in Capture the Flag. This strategy might make sense, if it were a different game.

I mean I know what these people are thinking since I have gone through the same. So the first time I played capitals I misunderstood the mode and thought you needed to protect your capital, but I didn’t know back then you got extra defense and stuff. So ye I would lose a few games but then I figured it out and won a lot more. I can see a lot of people thinking the exact same but being less fast in figuring out why it is wrong. The best way to protect your capital is by putting troops on it.
Thats exactly it, capital in corner = defense thinking. Not realizing all of your attacks from the capital. Way back in the day our risk board had 'castle risk' on the back. It was europe and castles. Many people who played would landlock their capital like it was their last line to protect. But id also put mine on the ocean (because Castle Risk had cards, one of which was an Admiral that let you move your armies via boat to attack). I dont' believe castle risk had 3 defending dice though...
In one game, I got noob slammed twice by a beginner and an intermediate for no reason, and they weren't collaborating either. I got second. Bruh, what the hell? This game is hard and unrewarding to play with idiots
My experience with capping in corners: When playing solo against the computer all the colors essentially gang up on you. So capping in a corner lets you slowly build out and take board. Doesn't work irl. But in soli its the only way you can take bonuses and not get surrounded.
i really hate the state that risk is in currently it just more and more bot outs the second a game doesn't go in someone's favor they just quit and go next. I don't like my cap options quits, there's no honey pot quits, my bonus got broken quits, my cap got rolled quits. i don't know what needs to change but if i wanted have 3-4 bots or neutral bot stacks then i would have had them to start it really just ruins games and makes them so easy to to play around when an overly aggo player hits everything
Yeah, it's exhausting to have to play annoying games if you want to progress your rating.. I often feel like there's weird collaborations as well. Had several games (eg on spaceport sigma) where there's people obviously not defending against huge stacks of other opponents, but putting all their troops somewhere completely unrelated to sabotage others and never getting hit. Example: one player gets like 20+ troops per turn. Another gets 10. He puts all 10 troops every turn to attack me and someone else although he's between us two and the other guy with 20 troops. Never gets hit, never stacks his cap, the 20 troop player stacks up and starts hitting one of us instead of getting another one point hold +20 while killing the guy who can't have many troops on his cap.
@@HiFisch94 it's a weird occurance but ill offer this "if I dont attack the big bad he'll let me live" seems to be the thought process, or a mix of "if I kill this other player before the big guy kills me I'll get more points"
