From other tests it seems like your performance will be almost identical. But on the 14 battery life will be a serious concern with the MAX. I just got the Base M1 Pro 14 inch after owning M1 MB Air since launch, the battery life on the 14 is significantly worse than the M1 while performance isn't night and day better
I ended up going with the 14" M1 Pro base model - by the time you had a 16GB RAM/512 SSD it was almost the same cost as the M1 models with those added...
Nice video... I am not an editor or anything like that. I just have a few GoPro videos I like to edit. Said that, I was just about to ask what sense it makes for the need of real time playback when adding effects? I would think that you edit your video first, see how it looks like (from an edit perspective) and then add your effects. Since you already know how the video "looks like", you would not need real time playback. HOWEVER, at the end, you prefect explain why you would need real time playback... when sitting there with a client. Makes sense. Thanks.
ALEX, Thank u for your courses, I have learned a lot. However, my 2018 mbp is slow, so I want another long term MacBook Pro. I have NVME ext storage. To cut down render times and edit in real time from original BRAW, should I get the M3 MAX mbp with 64GB RAM and 4TB drive, or the M3 MAX mbp with 128GB RAM and 2TB drive? Thank you
I got the 14" M1 Pro and somewhat disappointed (10/14). Especially export times are worse than Ryzen 7 2000 and 1660ti. I think for editing you just wanna jump to max.
@@Ni3K I have DR studio and ryzen 3700x ,32gb ram and gtx 1080ti and I want to get the MBP 16 m1 pro with 1tb ssd and wonder if this mbp is better than nvec at rendering !?

It would be nice if you would upload the whole project so I can test my computer the same way, to compare it to those in the video. But I doubt that you have this project anymore, after that long.
I figured this would be a great place for a Resolve question: I just recorded a documentary in ProRes using a BlackMagic camera. I wanted to edit in Premiere and Color Grade in Resolve. I tried out using XML, but noticed that the video quality from the XML is FAR worse that when I just import in the original video and color grade it there. For example the grain. On the ProRes, it is just a small unoticable amount. While in the XML you can clearly see a large flickering amount of grain ruining my color grading. Any advice on how I can color grade from Premiere to Resolve and still keep the quality?
You want to take the edit from premiere to resolve? Import the media in resolve first, then when importing the xml timeline, unbox ”automatically import source clips”. Then mark where your media is in the resolve bins
Not sure if this helps but from several other videos on other channels I’ve watched, running clips on the internal is slightly faster. Using an external is really more for keeping your internal from getting full
Thanks a LOT Alex. Great test. I'm with you about the base model for no client by your side. I've got the BASE M1 Macbook Air and it's doing great! Actually It's trashing out my Job's 2013 Mac Pro Maxed Out for a fraction of the cost (not mentioning power consuption).
Can I color grade on my 2020 M1 Mac? Because that’s not a calibrated screen correct? or do I pick another color profile? because when I grade on it It looks good on any apple devices but everywhere else looks either slightly off or really off ??? Anyone
I currently own an 2018 MacBook Pro and when I use Fushion add my colorgrade and throw speed warp it really seems to lag. Upgrading to the m1 max will improve my workflow I hope. Thx for your reviews really help
Hi there ! Thank you for your AMAZING review videos, finally something objective, concise and to the point; this really stand out in comparaison with 99% of the superficial review videos on YT ! Quick question: what was the codec you use for the clip in your test ? Would be sweet if you could add a little overview of the specs and results in the description of your videos for quick look up :) ! Question 2: since I am working 95% of the time with ARRI alexa prores 444 (which is already a pretty optimised codec within davinci) is the extra buck worth it for the M1pro and m1max considering their dedicated prores decode/encode accelerator ? Was wondering if we can really see the difference this extra technology makes when working with prores .........which bring me to my 3rd question: could we have this same test with a Prores 444 clip (have more than enough if you need one) :D And finally, would be great to have your opinion about 32gbRAM vs 64gb, for davinci users
Ok I do not have time to watch your other videos. How about Optical Flow with Speed Warp and Temporal Noise Reduction with at least a three frame reference and enhanced setting. I use these settings a lot on 4 K drone footage. Brings my I-Mac Pro to its knees…

You can always buy a bigger monitor later for the more powerful M1 Pro Macbook. Plus you'll be portable and the built in screen is better than anything you'll find under $1,200 anyway.
As the hype cycle is slowly fading and after testing a bit, I see that I get more value out of a $1500 Ryzen 9/RTX 3070 laptop with 1TB SSD and 16 Gig RAM. But if your workflow involves Finalcut or ProRes...this isn't even a choice. But if steer clear for m1 imac.... The way it is built it will reach thermal limits faster than even MacBook air. Mac Mini M1 with 16GB RAM is a pretty good option and it has fans in it.

Another excellent review, objective analysis of the three models available. It would be interesting a test in which it measures the percentage of cup and gpu in each test (Active Monitor).
