Bro, how much better can General Grievous get? The backstory, the looks, just magnificent, even the touch of Phonk you added made it 100 times better 😯
This is the Grievous we deserved in the films. Lucas has a lot of reverence for classic and vintage film making, but he should have recognized a modern talent like himself in Genndy Tartakovsky when it came to action. He should have coordinated with him for the prequels and done the sequels himself along with him. I wish he had been given better council before selling.
This was actually what Grievous was originally going to be in Episode 3, but he got rewritten in the last year or so of development. The reason why there is a difference is because the Clone Wars animated series had an EARLY draft of Episode 3 where Grievous was supposed to be a mirror image of Vader and would represent what Anakin would become. So at the beginning of the movie you see a ruthless Vaderesque Grievous, and as soon as he dies he is then replaced with Anakin to fulfill that same role. So, when the Clone Wars started production they had THAT version of Grievous. However, Lucas changed Grievous at the last minute because he thought that he stole the show of Episode 3 and became a more interesting villain than Palpatine and was a little too similar to Darth Maul (silent killer with multiple light sabers).
Imagine General Grievous redesigned into a hulking cybernetic beast who cuts down anything in his path with absolute concentration \ferocity that it feels as if death itself is staring you right in the face!
I remember watching these episodes as a kid and always thought this fight was crazy, like General Grievous is 1v4ing 4 trained Jedi simultaneously and winning, it truly makes him seem like a terrible force to fight against. I also like how they make him kind of a dirty fighter, disrupting the force, stopping the lightsaber pull, using his feet to smash and throw the jedi, hes more of a full contact fighter rather than strictly skilled in the saber, a very brute type of style and I love it.
I love how the music dampens perfectly to the chaos going around Grievous from like 0:25 - 0:28 all while just giving the most confident, death stare knowing full well that he's there determined to just cut these guys down and no one can stop him.
People talk about how awesome Grievous was in 2003 but give no credit to how badass Ki-Adi-Mundi was for literally holding his own longer than any other Jedi Master.
The movies and animated series always portrayed him as a joke which can be fine but this side of the character is so much better imo. The terror the jedi felt when facing him is real and making him a powerful opponent just sells the "litteral jedi killing machine" vibe so well.
This Grievous is a great example of how sometimes the early concepts are better than the final thing. The guys who made the show had nearly nothing to go on other than "cyborg general of the Droid army" and went ahead and made this absolute monster. Really a shame his final iteration was rethought of as more slimy and cowardly.
If I'm not mistaken, then Lucas suggested from the very beginning to make Grievous a Jedi assassin who attacks unexpectedly. Only if Lucas meant by this what happened in the movie and animated series of 2008, then Tartakovsky had his own opinion on this ... And looking today at those animated works that Gendy created, it becomes clear that Lucas twenty years ago made the one of the most correct choice in his life by taking this animator.
Echoing other sentiments. This Grievous is the real Grievous as associated with the live action version we see in Episode III. Not a fan of the CGI cartoon at all, it was too cartoonish, as opposed to the more traditionally animated micro series.
