This ost captures the 40k aesthetic better than anything I've ever heard before. Mechanicus was good at portraying the vibe of Tech Priests specifically, but this ost nails *the setting* in general. So many 40k games use music that is completely interchangeable with a fantasy setting. You could put the OST of Space Marine, or most of the dawn of war games, over a game about knights, dwarves and elves, and orcs fighting with swords- and it would be just as fitting. But despite the fact that knights, elves, dwarves and Orks actually exist in warhammer 40k, and they often do fight each other with swords, it's a science fiction setting. Not only that, it's a gothic retro sci-fi setting, invented in the 80s. The electronic element of this ost mixed with intentionally dated synth sounds, creepy strings, and the usual gothic choir elements are incredible. I'm playing the beta right now, and as I was running for my escape ship after a successful mission- the track "escape initiated" started playing, with that warped VHS tape sounding synth playing as I was blasting mutants and running for my life. It felt so RIGHT.
@@joshberkin5567 Yeah. The Eldar. They are an alien race that predates humanity's ascension to a space-fairing species. They even have a Sci-fi Dark Elf counterpart. In 40k lore, the Eldar were the dominant faction in the galaxy whist humanity were still living in caves and banging rocks together to make fire. They were so advanced that they managed to manipulate reality itself to create pocket dimensions in the warp. They created a network of colossal "tunnels" through the warp that allowed them to travel the immaterial realm without having to actually traverse hell in a space ship. This "webway" was so vast as to even contain entire sub realms- big enough to house captured stars. They were the Kings of the universe- but they fucked it all up. At the height of it's power, Eldar society reached such heights of decadence and depravity that it accidently created a new chaos god. Slaanesh, the chaos god of sex drugs and rock and roll, was born from the death scream of the eldar race. Now the only space elves left are those who saw the writing on the wall and isolated themselves on planet sized merchant vessels- who didn't indulge in that kind of thing, and their dark elf counterparts who were only spared because they were inside the webway when the fall occurred. They are a doomed race. Any time an eldar dies, the chaos god slaanesh consumes their soul. The craftworld Eldar use soulstones to prevent this, and the Dark Eldar survive by substituting their own doom with the suffering of others. They feed Slaanesh the suffering of their victims to stave off their own inevitable consumption. The Emperor himself actually planned to conquer the webway as part of his plan to eliminate humanity's dependence on the warp- as part of his scheme to defeat chaos once and for all. It didn't work out very well.
I disagree. It is a very good OST, and it is a very good soundtrack for an industrial hive world, but WH40k - not to be confused with nu40k - is an expansive, eclectic setting, and this music would be entirely out of place in a game set in, for example, a jungle-covered death world involving a war against xenos and the environment, or a peaceful backwater agricultural world involving clandestine investigations. Hell, it would be out of place on many hive worlds, even, let's say a frozen underground one based around refinement or run-of-the-mill consumer goods and services. The genius of this soundtrack is that it fits this particular game in this particular location extremely well. No more, no less. Further, WH40k was never a science-fiction setting; it was always a retro-gothic science-fantasy setting based in 80's pulp of both science-fiction and fantasy.

1:19:07 Imperial Advance is so good because at first the rhythm feels awkward. It's almost as if you're wishing it were faster, or sped up, but it doesn't. Instead it keeps a steady, almost too slow pacing, just on the brink of feeling bored, and it keeps that rhythm all the way through. The imperium advances in a steady, disciplined march, never rushing to avoid mistakes

@@PoolNoodleGundam Literally the opposite. The great sin of the Imperium is that it is a grinding behemoth, whose gears turn slowly, conservative to a fault, driven by necessity. An Imperium that rushes into anything is not true to the foundational fluff.
Jesper Kyd poured the culmination of his legendary talent into these OSTs, and it shows. I haven't heard an OST that made me yearn to play a game on its own merit in so long, I almost forgot the feeling.
The last ost like this for me was the doom 2016 soundtrack by Mick Gordon. His season 1 killer instinct soundtrack was amazing aswell. Makes me happy we got people like him and jesper kyd putting true passion into their music.

Disposal Unit (both versions) is SO FUCKING CATCHY. I fell in love with that track the moment I heard it in the first beta. The brutal beat, the hype choir, the synths. Jesper Kyd is a LEGEND.

Yes, indeed! Reminds me of the Unification Wars, Great Crusade, and Ullanor from the novels. Very well encapsulates the Emperor's majesty and power.

Borderlands 3 OST was sick too!
The imperium advances in a steady, disciplined march, never rushing to avoid mistakes
which is a little at odds because rushing into mistakes is the Imperium's foundational principle
I think it's because it starts off very similar to some songs in Vermintide 2 where the songs actually pick up.
@@PoolNoodleGundam, not really.
It’s after the emperor got put on the chair I believe, after that, everything went to shit, someone should canonically plug a TTS device onto him already-
@@PoolNoodleGundam Literally the opposite.
For real, he (along with Mick Gordon) brought me back vibes I had with Red Alert 2
Hast thou memory-banks been so depleted? Let the bells of the Mechanicum ring through thine receptors!
Two games that come to mind are the Plague Tale games. Olivier Deriviere did an amazing job with both of them, particularly Requiem.
@@lazerrhino Andrew Hulshult also did an amazing job with Dusk and Amid Evil. The newer stuff is decent too, but it didn't go above and beyond
50:20 I remember listening to this in the pre-alpha and being blown away. This soundtrack is easily going up there with Mechanicus and DoW1.
I'm not a religious man but that song makes me want to cave in the heads of non believers.
It slaps harder the the Ogryns left palm
Mechanicus really reminds me of Frontline Assemblys-Implode album.
Chaos rising ost was always so good
This soundtrack goes so fucking hard I swear to God. Absolutely oozing with atmosphere with its Orchestral/ Celtic/ industrial Influence and it just works so well.
So glad Warhammer is making a comeback so we can enjoy this great music!

Disposal Unit is 100% the biggest tune in Necromunda raves.
I am going to run a 40k TTRPG campaign and I am playing Nightsider as the background music for a firefight in a night club.
(Ever heard of the "You meet in a tavern" cliche? I am 40k-fying it).
Ever since I saw the trailer yesterday the soundtrack at 21:58 is so good it got me to buy the game in a heartbeat
Its sooooo good, OST prefectly represents 40k

Goofy ahh song, but a great one
Praise the machine spirit for that cute servo skull soundtrack XDD
Yes! Yesterday I was play that quest then this track started playing, it's just otherworldly.
1:02:43 Transmission Commences is something else. The slower synth is mesmerizing, a brief oasis in the middle of all these blood-pumping tracks...
Then it transitions into Offworld Auspex, and we're right back where we left off. Love it.
Easily my favorite track(s) in the game. When I first heard that twinkling synth during the game I was like "holy shit that's gorgeous."
Then the tempo picked up and I was right back in it.
Pacing through those hab blocks with a Zarona Quickdraw while those twinkly synths play… very bladerunner-esque vibes.
@@smuglydepressed I thought it was a sound effect that played upon entering one of the sleeping quarters lol

Immortal Imperium has to be my favorite. Perfect blend of Latin chants, gothic/haunting opera and electronics.
Me too. It's iconic!
My favorite too tbh !
1:02:43 this song started playing while I was walking through a huge library segment following a servitor skull, I looked up for the first time and really took everything in, at that moment I knew I understand the love for this universe
This game coming to Xbox gamepass is easily one of the biggest steals this year
I had been playing for about 8 hours, when I got a mission where we need to kill a heretic leader, Disposal Unit came on just as I activated my ablity and pulled out my Ogryn Sized Gatling gun. melted the boss with it. cemented my love for this game
Easily agreed
A gamer looking up? Liar. XD
Environmental design and artistry in this game is insane. Best looking 40k depiction and sound ever
I had the same thing happen to me! I legitimately thought the servo skull was making the "twinkling" noise. Either way, it hyped up the mission.
1:29 beautiful how it conveys the unknown and horrible as well as something imminent and dark as well as something epically catastrophic haha
I've never played a game where the music drives you this much. Its like a direct line to your brain that makes you go completely popeye spinach mode as soon as the bass drops
Easily a Top 10 OST of the last decade. The first time I heard Disposal Unit during the boss fight I knew i'd pay money for this soundtrack. Suffer not the Down-Voter.
This has gotta be Jesper Kyd's best work since the Ezio trilogy, might even be his best work yet. Absolutely incredible stuff

This feels like 40k without going towards troupes.
It's dirty.
It's mechanical.
It has that essence of dark synth that just reminds you of Terminator.
