    I feel compelled to defend Requiem for a Dream as a story because of the source material; Hubert Selby Jr struggled with addiction himself for a substantial portion of his life and the novel was a very raw reflection of that. It is very much based on his lived experiences, particularly Sara and Harry's stories. The novel is also super stream of consciousness which I think Aronofsky tried to translate into the panic-inducing style that we see in the movie. Unfortunately, I think a lot of the humanity and atmosphere was lost in that translation and the end result comes off as a PSA. I'd recommend checking out the novel if you can! I did an independent research project on it in high school and it was enlightening.

    Darn! I’m usually so in-sync with May’s opinions but I really love ‘Mother!’ as a environmentalist, romantic, feminist and armchair theologian, I feel like it’s got a lot of horrific value through any of those lenses. Personally I think it’s Aronofsky best work. I also enjoy ‘Natural Born Killers’ as a condemnation of how we vicariously love evil people as a culture.

      Yeah actually I’d be interested in seeing May’s take on suehiro maruo’s artwork in general. It won’t be everyone’s cup of tea but I think his stuff is pretty interesting

    • @NINI-xc6my
      @NINI-xc6my 2 года назад +8

      It think that its mostly the tone that people dont like. All Suehiro Maruo stories have this odd tone where you live in a world that is just seems to enjoy being horrible. If you are horrible you are the only one that is having fun and everyone thats good ..is screwed...even if it looks like that for a second like there is a happy ending for them he pulls the rug right under you. In most stories even the evil people are screwed and become victims of a greater evil. And at the same time the tone he is aming for is not Grim dark or depressing as one would imagine.. If you would have to describe it would be something like "Schadenfreude".
      While at the same time Maruo is putting so much work into his Art to make it visually appealing and if you read his mangas he uses such odd but defintily thought-through techniques to create an atmosphere of horror that you kinda have respect him for the effort.
      The only guy i can actually compare Him to is John Webster, a 17th century dramatist. His Plays would basicly always end with the good guys dying in the middle of the story , everyone else remaining is horrible and loving it or horrible and Vengefull or Horrbile and gone Mad and in the end everyone is dead to send the audience home happy.. , probably in a final giant bloodbath after a bunch of murder, madness..sometimes lycanthropy in which all evil characters kill each other. But its also at the same time its written in this clever, witty, poetic shakespearian dialogue and with well structured Themes and Charackter development that you cant stop thinkig "this is a well crafted mass-murder in your final act Sir...uhh.. Chefs kiss."

    • @deparinge
      @deparinge 2 года назад +1

      I'm surprised it apparently has supporters. It kind of reminds me of A Serbian Film in that the only real appeal is that bad shit happens but while ASF isn't particularly good it's much less ugly and dumb. Honestly maybe anime Megan is Missing is more accurate. If you want to watch an anime with someone getting denied a happy break from their tragic life the first arc/book of Blue Literature is actually okay from what I remember although it has less shock value.

    • @DecoyBlackMage
      @DecoyBlackMage 2 года назад +3

      The manga is an interesting read.
      Overall the anime follows the same story, though a few things are different here and there.
      Weirdly enough it is actually kinda MORE disturbing in some ways, the art is actually quite good as well.
      It is Ero guro, so you kinda get just that, the mangakas focus on the human body, twisting it and corrupting it is quite interesting overall, it is more the
      main characters age that really makes the work difficult, the sexual assaults and flat out abuse.
      That ending though....Oh boy does that ending stick with you........

    • @Frosting1000
      @Frosting1000 2 года назад +6

      @@deparinge not rlly a supporter of the film itself, but its backstory is also pretty interesting and weird. I’m more saying suehiro maruo’s other mangas should be looked at, they’re considered the peak examples of ero-guro as an art form and deal with the darkness and bleakness of post war Japan. Like the things that happened in his stories are horrible, fucked up and sometimes absurd bc the country just went through a world war and things can’t just go back to normal. Plus the art is quite intricate.

    May, me dear, thank you for the list. I did have to shut my eyes and plug my ears for the WTDGTD footage, but that will count for my Halloween jumpscare this year.
    Also, huge thank you for reposting your wonderful, educational Halloween essays! I love those yummy treats💕.
    Now I will patiently wait for your hot take on Halloween Kills. I hope you and your loves have a wonderful time this weekend🎃

    may!! ive been subscribed to you for so long. when i first subscribed i was a tiny baby who was terrified to watch anything more disturbing than salad fingers (which is still pretty disturbing ngl). now im old and grizzled and have seen things. whenever i watch your tier lists and other compilation videos and can say ive seen any fraction of these movies im like "oh no." thank you for being wonderful as usual

    My college film class watched Titicut Follies lmao. Like... all three professors of the class approved it to be watched by us all as a class, and screened it. All I can say is, the professor who chose it did not give us nearly enough trigger warnings.
    While I'm at it, sanism and ableism are deeply critical realities and marginalizations that aren't talked about nearly enough, and aren't even considered in a surprising amount of so-called "progressive" activist circles.

    The Green Inferno blows its load on that one, imo, incredibly disturbing death where the dude gets ripped apart. Everything else is a joke.

      I don't normally like it, and the writer's strike delay kind of ruined it, but if this is the slow cousin of Cannibal Corpse, aw, I can't stay mad at you!

    "Snowtown" is a weird movie for me, because while a lot of it was slow and not very compelling like May said, it does contain a scene that inspired within me a more pure empathetic terror than I can muster for most other horror movies. But does that one scene make up for the whole rest of the movie? I dunno.

      If it’s the scene I’m thinking of , I found it disturbing, it stayed in my head a bit

    Hi, May! I have recently become a big fan of you, your channel, and your badass music! I was so excited to come home from work and see this video uploaded! A single video idea I have would be a lot of mind fuckery, I know, but I just came across a DVD copy of Where the Dead Go to Die and honestly… I’ve never been so nervous to watch a film in my life. I quickly skipped through it on RUclips and I keep nervously wondering about it and imagining the creepy, PS2 animation style and wondering if you would ever make a review on it in the future just to further explain why and how it is a FUCKING WOW film and why/how exactly it even got made.
    Has anyone else seen this film? I haven’t heard it mentioned anywhere besides from May’s channel and I would love to see some discussion on it since it seems like a complete mindfuck of disturbing shit and a half.
