Steve Vai has created his sound exclusively with boss pedals. Why? he has said if a pedal fails or goes missing that no matter where you in the world you can walk into any guitar shop and they will stock boss pedals.
I agree, but my local music shop doesn't. Like once I wanted to buy a BOSS DS-1 and when I asked the store employee (who was also the manager) if they have it, he said "I don't stock boss pedals, if you want something actually good buy something from this shelf" and he showed me some fender pedals. Never went to that store again (ordering everything online now)
Yeah... but, you forgot to stir in a sizeable line of a crushed adderall pill and some medium quality cocaine. Then add 4 English pints of ale, and wait a bit for his bladder to fill. Roll camera. Still a cool video, good info, and he is far less annoying as the majority of guys prattling on about stuff he owns. My first pedal was a Boss PH-2 Super Phaser. That phaser, a beautiful looking and sounding Guild acoustic guitar, and my set of EPI A11 Magnus speakers I got for Christmas at about 15 or 16 years old are the only things I regret selling.
No ring mod, no clean boost aside for an eq pedal, no decent compressor, no harmonix tremolo, and average phasers, but otherwise, yeah, they do cover alot of ground.

Back in the early 80's there wasn't much choice and the funny thing is is that Boss (and MXR) pedals were (and still are) really good even with little competition. Yreally can't go wrong with most of what they have to offer. The Overdrive Preamp kills!
I prefer the MXR Chorus because it plays a lot nicer feeding into a Power Stack 2 without getting it's effect mangled and compressed by the PS-2. OD3 is a slightly more open pedal on the mids than the PS-2 but not as easy to chain.

In love with Boss pedals because they're real tools for real musicians. But I have to admit, after owning a few DS1s, I loved them all but a few weeks ago I got my first Japanese DS1... The first 10 minutes it was impossible for me to hear any difference between this and the made in Taiwan one but, boy, you start to roll off the volume knob on your guitar, your valves get hotter and voilà, what a pedal! Oh, God, the first time I got a pedal capable of doing what my lovely OCD does, shining in dynamics, being warm and balanced, aggressive and subtle... Anyway, my lovely OD3 is another example of why Boss is a legend.
I think my 1st is a used Blues Driver. I later found out it was a 1st year one. Still have it, it’s one of my only overdrives on my board. That and the DM3 80s analogue that I’ve bought on the cheap.
My first Boss pedal and the second I ever bought is Metal Zone, i still have it 17 later and I love it regardless of what people are saying about MT-2 or Boss effects in general.
I used the original mt2 for 20 years, was my first pedal to. I recently got the revamped waza mt2w. Same classic mt2 sound but a wider range of tones to play with
Lol, the metal zone is the reason that I don't like boss pedals. Well that and they're digital. But if it works for you, then it works for you! Nobody is going to like everything!
Ibanez had a pedal called overdrive from earlier in the 70s (years before the ts808 and OD1), but it was actually a fuzz. So the name was on a guitar pedal before the OD1. I'm selling my OD1 by the way. Was one of a handful that survived the storage theft of all my stuff, and since insurance wouldn't pay, having TS9, SD1 and OD1, when I need more stuff, the most valuable one has to go since the SD1 is close enough There were probably close to 30 boss pedals in my collection at the time. Love these things. And a few of them were rare and valuable :(. My first one ever was a BF2 and actually that one was in the bag with 6 other pedals that survived, including CE2 as well. It could have been worse, at least I still have those.
8:26 The Colorsound Overdriver came to market in 1971; 8:34 Tube Screamers were not a thing in 1977. The TS808 is a copy of the OD-1 with added tone control and symmetrical clipping. It came to market in 1979 as the Maxon OD808 Overdrive, which Ibanez rebranded as the TS. So everything about that statement is wrong. Otherwise a great video. Keep’em coming!
Robin Guthrie also had a pedal board made of mostly Boss pedals. When both Prince and Robin used them, you know you can get pretty much any sound you want out of them.
My favorite boss is the ST-2!! This bad boy is an amazing amplifier simulation! This distortion pedal very well simulates a saturated Marshall Stack and it does super well and it still plays well with other pedals!!
Boss pedals are awesome. Reliable and built like a tank. My first pedal and my first Boss pedal was the DS-2 in 1987 and i still have it. I also still have the Boss CS-3 and Boss PS-5 still also. I used to have a Boss TR-2. If PRINCE likes Boss pedals or any other equiptment and gear it is automatically the best...they are the BOSS.
The pedal that came out the year I was born was the DS-1... I finally got around to buying one this year during lockdown. My first Boss pedal was a metal zone in the early 90's. No idea what happened to it. Then the CS-3 compressor which I still have to this day
I used to have this sound that a lot of people liked where I’d mix bd-2 and a rat distortion, I guess people just liked it because the bd-2 was super bassy and the rat was so trebley that it just worked. Actually know that I think about it, I’m gonna go find my bd-2 and rat and get some kickass tones again
Boss DD3, the one thing I'd want changed (now that there is a tap tempo version) is a subdivision option :) It's last in my pedal chain, with my reverb, phaser and another delay in front of it.
I'm mostly a keys player who plays a little guitar at intermediate level for my own recordings. I play a MIM HSS Strat into a Roland JC22. I recently purchased a Boss BCB-60 case which I am gradually populating with Boss pedals. I already have a CS-3 compressor, an SD-1 overdrive and a TR-2 tremolo. I want to add a TU-3 tuner, a DS-1 distortion and a DD-7 delay. If I don't get the DS-1, I might go for the BF-3 flanger instead. We'll see. Back in the 80s, when I first tried to learn to play guitar, I had a Boss flanger and a chorus.
SD-1. Got last fall for $39 new! It sounds just as good as most $100 distortion pedals.. I was glad is was so cheap, but thats not why I got it. I got it only for how it sounds.. The Boss Power Stack is great too.. and no one ever mentions it! I got that one last fall, too. These 2 are the very best of Boss distortion pedals! I tried so many, and listened to literally ALL Boss dist pedals before I got those 2. SD-1, and Power Stack..
Power Stack all the way! The thing is a hidden gem...brown sound/Plexi/high gain with some magic mojo mixed in...No one knows about it, or really cares....I didn't...until I plugged into one and flipped my wig....
Boss rotary ensemble. I have their Boss Me-80 and I love it, but the RE kills. If I want that sweet Beatles rotary sound? BOOM! The manic Hendrix univibe sound? Right there. I love it
I love my Metal Zone (Unpopular opinion) if you dont know how to use it it sounds terrible but if you dial it in just right it has a really good crunchy distortion and with the neck pickup with volume rolled it can get a cool bluesey overdrive
Absolutely. It's such a versatile pedal. I set it to the "heavy metal" setting, but turn the gain almost all the way down. Play it with my Gibson es135 hollow body and it sounds incredible. Not what most people would expect from it. It's a truly brilliant pedal
My favorite Boss pedal I had and unfortunately sold was the Boss HM2 . Man I miss that pedal. I am however more of a MXR pedal guy. I actually gain stack a Zakk Wylde overdrive with a Ibanez Nu-tube screamer and run them with the Earthquaker swiss things and MXR stereo chorus and MXR Wylde wah .
Flanger it sounds so 80s but also so dreamy and it works better then any chorus pedal if u turn down the resonance it’s absolutely perfect highly recommend it
I’ve been down the boutique rabbit hole and come out the other end. Sold more boutique pedals I can care to remember. Never sold a Boss pedal. I’ve realised that most boutique pedals are based on the industry standard sounds that Boss has laid the foundations for. BD2 is my fav pedal of all time and I bought the OD3 yesterday. £77 for a pedal that is an absolute killer OD sound. Stacks great with the BD2. I would like to have seen a waza / special edition of the TR2. Reissue of the OD 1 is vastly overdue.
My first Boss pedal was a DS1 which I still keep at home. In mid 90's I started to play bass and I used several fx brands or no pedals at all. This year I decided to get a different overdriven bass tone and I got an used ODB3. This pedal has a bad reputation but I wanted to try it anyways. I was shocked because it's a very versatile bass overdrive if you know what are you doing with the knobs. For high gain overdrive bass tone it lacks of the clarity of the Darkglass stuff ( I use a B3K in my metal band) but it could do the job. My last Boss pedal was a BF3 flanger which I got used a couple of months ago. After looking for different options including other brands, the Boss flanger was the only which gave me the sound I hear in my head. Boss pedals are built to last, sound good and you can get them for a reasonable price in the used market.
Love the SD1 as my primary boost. Plan on picking up the Waza Dimension C, I’ve got a DS1 which moves on and off my pedalboard. I really want the SY1 to augment my sonic capabilities.
Rc-3 loop is my best....3 hr of recording and a band at myself with it since the last 10 years and never have flaw its a beast and with beat comin from another app you can add it and do your own song all by yourself....amazing...loop on a loop on a loop....again and again...
The other thing I heard Billy Duffy of the Cult say in an interview was that if they're on tour somewhere and a pedal breaks (which rarely happens), or the gear gets delayed, pretty much every store has them, so it's easy to get a replacements. My first Boss pedals were the SD-1 and the HM-2. The Powerstack is pretty great too.
I play hard thrashy stuff . My favorite boss pedal is the Turbo Distortion, DS2 . I still use it all the time as a clean boost along side of either the Boss SD1 or a TS9. But I just got a Maxon. Super Tube pro+. Which is like a TS9 in steroids.
i have a tu3 and for being so unnoticed and seemingly unremarkable at first.... it's like the best thing ever. extremely easy to tune fast. works as output splitter, mute switch, and the buffer is boss.
Favourites I’ve owned... The Turbo Overdrive (Not an OD really, it’s actually a tight medium gain distortion), The CE2 Chorus, The DD7 delay, The OC2 Octave, The Metal Core, The Power Stack (love it), The OD3 overdrive, The AW-2 Autowah, The BF2 Flanger, The ‘63 Reverb, and more.

Up until the last decade or so, Boss was really the only company to last that offered pedals except maybe for MXR.

My first and only boss pedal, for now at least, is an RV-6. I never have much of a use for it, but it’s super cool, and sounds beautiful.
This was informative. Thank you.
SD-1 and OD-3 are my favorites, two stacked together is even more awesome!
Blues Driver. Brilliant pedal!
That 63 reverb is simply one of my favourite pedals ever! I’ve even made a video review with it
Boss rotary ensemble.
Love my SD-1. Perfect for boosting my Marshall DSL into metal goodness.
@@masongregory278 I know exactly what you mean. Best of both worlds pedal.
I've done blind tests with people that say that they hate Boss pedals and everybody liked the SD-1 over the TS9 every time boosting my Marshall.
Flanger it sounds so 80s but also so dreamy and it works better then any chorus pedal if u turn down the resonance it’s absolutely perfect highly recommend it
Born in 1978. So was my beloved DS-1, which sits on my pedal board as we speak. However, I'm also staying current. I've already ordered the new OC-5.
this is what i was waiting for great!
Best Boss pedal is the BD-2
Well, it’s MT-2 actually
BF2 entered chat
There are several very good Boss pedals, but I do love my BD-2.
This
My first Boss pedal was a DS1 which I still keep at home.
BD-2 Bluedriver is a great pedal. When I'm jamming on my Big Muff and it's time for a solo, that's what I'm going to.
My current fave pedal is my only Boss pedal, the CE-3 Chorus. Works as an awesome subtle vibrato in stereo mode
I have a couple of Boss pedals still on my board, but my favourite is still the DS-1. Great little distortion pedal.
I have a boss tu-3 as my first and that little thing is a monster
Love the SD1 as my primary boost. Plan on picking up the Waza Dimension C, I’ve got a DS1 which moves on and off my pedalboard. I really want the SY1 to augment my sonic capabilities.
The Systech Overdrive pre dates the OD-1 - It was made in USA, had buffered bypass. Sounds incredible you should check it out!
Rc-3 loop is my best....3 hr of recording and a band at myself with it since the last 10 years and never have flaw its a beast and with beat comin from another app you can add it and do your own song all by yourself....amazing...loop on a loop on a loop....again and again...
I just picked up the Power Stack. It's absolutely amazing! Best distortion pedal I've heard!
I thought it was Vai that said that. maybe they both did haha. Either way, it's a good point.
@@betts12220 He doesn't specifically say Boss here, but about 10 mins in: ruclips.net/video/5_qxW_htSnU/видео.html
My first BOSS pedal ( or any pedal) was the HM-2 which I bought in 1986, still have it, including the box.
I have alot of Boss pedals. But my favorite is XT-2 Xtortion. Such an awesome distortion pedal!
My latest favourite is the Metal Core ML-2 goes great with my Dime guitar and Cube amp🤘
The OD3 Overdrive pedal is killer too!
The OD-2R and the Blues Driver are my hands down favorites out of the 50 or so I own.
Biggest fan of boss pedals. Aesthetically pleasing, durable and best bang for the buck!!
I had a Metal Zone probably 20 years ago. Ola Englund did a Metal Zone demo last year now I want one again.
Love all my Boss-pedals,but one I love the most.
The Hm2,it is an Iconic Distortion wich I use for Death-metal.
My boss ds1 was my first oedal. Still rockin it 16 years later
Boss OD-20. What a beast.
I'm confident to say this guy is even better than Russell Brand. Great job once again Dagan!
Ds1 has been my go to for decades
Got my first Boss in '79, a DS-1. Every time I rummage around in my cupboards or storage rooms a Boss pedal turns up.
Love BOSS pedals. I have a DS-1, 2 DS-2's, CE-2W and an RC-1 black edition. Really need to get a BD-2W and SD-1.
i have a tu3 and for being so unnoticed and seemingly unremarkable at first.... it's like the best thing ever. extremely easy to tune fast. works as output splitter, mute switch, and the buffer is boss.
Love this Jack Sparrow sounding dude .🤘
Favourites I’ve owned...
The Turbo Overdrive (Not an OD really, it’s actually a tight medium gain distortion), The CE2 Chorus, The DD7 delay, The OC2 Octave, The Metal Core, The Power Stack (love it), The OD3 overdrive, The AW-2 Autowah, The BF2 Flanger, The ‘63 Reverb, and more.
Replace the metal core with the new MT-2W-Waza Craft. Insane sound. If you want that old buzzing bee distortion it's there, but the upgrade is insane.
I love my OD-2R. I have an ME80 as well and the BD-2 model in it sounds great as well
