- King Charles has unveiled the first completed official portrait of himself since The Coronation, painted by renowned artist Jonathan Yeo.
The portrait was commissioned in 2020 to celebrate the then Prince of Wales’s 50 years as a member of The Drapers’ Company.
The portrait depicts His Majesty wearing the uniform of the Welsh Guards, of which he was made Regimental Colonel in 1975.
The canvas was carefully considered to fit within the architecture of Drapers’ Hall and the context of the paintings it will eventually hang alongside. Report by Matthew Covell.

The king's face emanates serene benevolence. The artist was able to transcribe the expression with great sincerity. The dynamics of the work inscribe the action in the discovery of the aspirations that his majesty will instill in the world...

Why are modern painters and artists soooo bad. This is horrific and Dianas sculpture was a nightmare
The same reason that all standards in all aspects of life have taken a nose dive off of a cliff into a burning pile of pooh.
Yes, the Diana statue was equally hideous.
Because art, instead of elevating ideals, has become a tool for commercial and political agendas, and as a consequence of this trend, there are many talentless seekers who are recognized only to serve as a backdrop for content creators with an "ideologically correct" theme.
Because making a simple portrait can be done with every phone camera. So modern art has to be more creative, put more emotion and meaning into the artwork instead of just representing reality.
Dont worries, there are still so many talented modern artist that make incredible arts. You see more "bad" modern arts because they spark more controversy and debate so they become more exposed.
The artist's true intention must have been to insult the king.

It was interesting hearing the painter acknowledge that this portrait was painted through the time of the late Queen's passing. How difficult it would have been to continue with that work given the circumstances. The butterfly was an inspired motif, given this "job" change. The fact that it was suggested by His Majesty shows his sensitivity to artistic interpretation. His Majesty is a talented water colour artist. I find this stunning and would never have thought of it. It's not all red, there is pink and orange, generally considered colours of happiness and energy throughout many cultures. I think it suits simply because King Charles, in a short time, has made his mark on the structure of the royal family, he is a person of energy and optimism, he is interested in art and and is as modern a monarch that we have ever had. The face is beautiful. It was a risk, but nice for him to stand out a bit I think.
😂😂😂😂
I was shocked when I first saw the painting but looking closely at his face , I’ve grown to like it a lot. It is such a kind and warm rendition of his majesty. His hands are beautiful as well,,,for sausage fingers, as he calls them. It forces one to see him,,,not his uniform or background and his majesty is a thoughtful and gentle person.

Im speechless. Its that beautiful
It is clearer to view from a distance. The artist has captured the face really well. It's a modernist view of a Prince, who has become King ❤😊

Too red! Don’t like the red background
Sorry. Shocking. Absolutely. This artist is not able to visualize a human hand.
Or his sausage fingers.
I love it, it's like stepping into your next life, with all the energy propelling you forward. In a large space it will very dramatic and very royal
It's a beautiful representation of King Charles character. He is kind and very thoughtful, and i see that in his face. And the butterfly is also full of meaning, not the least his transformation into a monarch but also his love of nature, it is a daring colour, but as the artist said, its the colour of the royal guards, and the Kings long association with them.
I'm more of a traditionalist, but the eyes are spot on. Such restrained intensity.
That is STUNNING!
I like it. I certainly won't ever forget it that's for sure.
I think it's a beautiful painting that captures the King's face perfectly. If we look at paintings of Monarchs through the ages we see they are all different from the one before. It's called 'progress' and symbolises how portraits are viewed as times change. The butterfly is a wonderful touch!
I feel the background is a bit too close in color to the jacket HM is wearing.
That is the whole point. Did you not bother to listen to the artist

I love the tones and their representations. Wow. I wish I could see this in person. Really well done. It speaks. Wonderful.
I think the piece is very striking but also perfectly encapsulates The Kings prescribes and power. I also think it’s embarrassing that most people see a red portrait and immediately think ‘ it must be satanic!’, it’s a very simpleminded interpretation
Didn't like it when I first saw it, but it's really grown on me over the course of the following hours. I think it communicates the power of the King very well. Long may he reign!
