I think that the massive boost in subscribers in 2019 is mostly linked to the beginning of PewDiePie's let's play which made a huge impact in viewership and subscribers for a lot of content creators.
It had a very huge decrease in popularity, his arrival definitly boosted the viewership and recommendations for minecraft youtubers. There's a lot of videos about this subject, i suggest you should inform yourself :) @@christianseibold3369
The popularity of Minecraft YT content overall definitely has ebbed and flowed over time, but the BIG resurgence (aka Minecraft Renaissance) in MCYT popularity in 2019 had multiple contributing factors: there was a general rise in interest and content made for "nostalgia games", which probably led to and then was bolstered by PewDiePie starting his Minecraft Let'sPlay. Grian had joined Hermitcraft midway through 2018 and the season 6 Civil War/Prank War happened mid 2019, which was very popular and generated a ton of collaboration content, which tends to increase subscribers as fans are introduced to new creators. We also had Philza dying in his Hardcore world, which went viral and hit the mainstream news, and SMP Live and Minecraft Mondays increased popularity/diversity of livestreamed Minecraft content. At the end of 2019, Minecraft Championship came in as MCM died and introduced different spheres of MC fans to each other by including a variety of gametypes that required different skills and deliberately teaming creators with different backgrounds (PVP, speed running, parkour, building, SMPs) together. Again, crossover/collab content is great for viewers to find new creators and new styles of content to enjoy (and subscribe to). ...And then, following this reemergence of Minecraft popularity, 2020 and lockdown hit and all online content got a big boost, most notably the DSMP got crazy popular and lots of press attention; I think all Minecraft SMPs (including Hermitcraft, Empires/XLife) got an extra boost in interest there, with a secondary boost hitting especially the largest ones when the DSMP ended and its fans looked for replacement content.
i have an interesting observation (perspective from a person who literally discovered english speaking minecraft youtubers and life series this summer lol) that people usually split up into two categories: 1) those who mainly watched mumbo and grian, almost didn’t heard about lizzie, were surprised to find out she is so popular 2) those who mainly watched lizzie, almost didn’t heard about mumbo/grian/hermitcraft, most of the time found out about them through the life series with lizzie secret third option: og who have been mainly watching etho/joel and i think that maybe this phenomenon occurs due to them specializing on different kinds of minecraft youtube content? i don’t know though lol i didn’t watch their really old videos and i wasn’t there to compare them and make a proofed conclusion
I will say, another part of this graph that's inaccurate is that technically Martyn is first, as his Aka Martyn channel was made on the 8th of April 2008, before Ethos channel was made. It does make the graph weirder that way, since Martyn has far more subscribers on his regular InTheLittleWood channel, and that channel is/was his main channel, but I figured I should say it for accuracies sake
2018 -2019 Mumbo and Grian explosion is likely due to him and mumbo doing A LOT OF collabs and Grian joined hermitcraft. You can see all hermits getting boost from this.
I knew Lizzie was one of the older, more beloved creators simply due to people talking about her but I never realised how big she was (that kinda cam out wrong)
Mumbo got me into watching Minecraft content starting in Hermitcraft Season 6. Got hooked and needing more content, watched his Season 5. (now occasionally working on his beginning in Season 2). Over the years and following seasons, I've added many more Hermits to the schedule, following dilligently. The Empires crossover was such an amazing experience, and it made me add Jimmy to the list. What a guy! (also, I'm just glad to see Pearl get going in the graph after such a long time. She's wonderful)
I actually remember Lizzy from back when she did the moon race with stampy and squid, and for Bdubs I remember him from attack on the B-Team before I found out about the others.
I searched up some dates, like the start of HC season 7, HC season 8 and the life series overall to try and track the changes with major events - the only thing I learnt was my sense of time from COVID is so distorted
Hey, the new facecam placement and setup right here looks great! First time seeing content after your move, I haven’t caught up on secret life yet, there’s so much to watch! Bdubs episodes have been an hour length most of the time lol!! Anyway, looks fantastic!
It is funny that this video popped up on my homepage today because yesterday was the first day that I realized that Mumbo is the largest channel I'm subscribed to and it isn't even close. There are some channels in my subscriptions that I thought were way bigger and they're just puny in comparison. Also, it is interesting to see what happened in 2019 when they decriminalized subscribing to Mumbo or Grian without subscribing to both. It used to be a felony punishable by death penalty. Now it's just frowned upon.
I've always been aware of Lizzie bc of Race to the Moon but i had no idea her channel was as large as it was. I also had no idea Joel had been around so long, I thought he started getting big around 2016 for some reason.
mmh, like light said. he was probably just watching videos and liking&adding videos to his now privated playlists. i wonder what young grian was watching.
The weird audio is a RUclips in-built anti-copyright system you can enable on your videos, which does what it can to remove copyrighted audio while keeping in any non-copyrighted audio.
Lizzie, Joel, Etho we’re all OG creators. Their best content was actually crazy craft, Joel’s husband and wife series, and ethos long term survival world. Their content I believe drove all the other creators.
See here i was thinking lizzie was a proper old school Minecraft youtuber. Its odd, ive always categorised her into the same camp as stampy. Don't know why. I dont do it with anyone else except for BigB, but i think he was close to stampys sister.

I was always a Popularmmos kid, though I also watched Ssundee (who collabed with CaptainSparklez and MrCrainer) and a but of PrestonPlayz.
i think 2019 was the grian vs mumbo era. also, 2019 was when minecraft became popular again i think. and people might have looked up for red stone ideas. and thus mumbo gets so much sub suddenly.

Mumbo gaining almost a million subs while being on break is a feat in its own.
Been with Etho since the start, pretty much. Joined Bdubs when I saw his arena on Mindcrack through Etho. Somehow found Martyn before he joined the Yogscast. And I remember being subbed to Lizzy somewhere at some point for some reason, but I had absolutely NO idea she was a giant. Meaning it must ave been before she blew up.
I found mindcrack through sethbling which brought me to etho / bdubs and eventually hermitcraft
I've been a Geminitay fan since 2018 and I had forgotten how few subscribers she had then in comparison to now.
Can we appreciate how consistent BigB was, staying in the top 7 the whole time and never dropping down
Fun Fact! In 2018 Lizzie was the UK top female RUclips gamer and was second most watched female younger as well!
Honestly props to Lizzie, she reigned over them for a while
PearlescentMoon and ZombieCleo are sooo underrated. They both produce such amazing videos.
Can we all agree that all of these people should be over a million. What I think needs to happen is Skiz needs to do more collabs with other people other than Impulse and Tango. He's such a nice guy lets get him on collabs with some of the other really popular people for the exposure.
Timmy, you are a Legend also! Life Series got me watching all your vids too, keep it up. (To be fair though Grian is my favorite, but you should mess with him more.)
No wonder Mumbo and Grian are so close, they've been side by side in the sub counts ever since Grian popped off (might have the cause and effect wrong there, but you know, can't tell that from the stats alone :D )
@@christianseibold3369it is 100% fact that pewdiepies Minecraft series created a Minecraft resurgence in 2019, there is no way u can deny it
@@christianseibold3369Why do you come off as so hostile to simple facts?
My guess is it might have something to do with the pandemic...
i have an interesting observation (perspective from a person who literally discovered english speaking minecraft youtubers and life series this summer lol) that people usually split up into two categories:
1) those who mainly watched mumbo and grian, almost didn’t heard about lizzie, were surprised to find out she is so popular
2) those who mainly watched lizzie, almost didn’t heard about mumbo/grian/hermitcraft, most of the time found out about them through the life series with lizzie
secret third option: og who have been mainly watching etho/joel
and i think that maybe this phenomenon occurs due to them specializing on different kinds of minecraft youtube content? i don’t know though lol i didn’t watch their really old videos and i wasn’t there to compare them and make a proofed conclusion
I can't believe how little subs people like pearl have considering how long they've been around with the rest of you
And Skizz.
I think its Insane with Ethos Subcount. Half his Subs are watching him for 10y and he is still growing, showing he still gets net positiv viewcounts.
I searched up some dates, like the start of HC season 7, HC season 8 and the life series overall to try and track the changes with major events - the only thing I learnt was my sense of time from COVID is so distorted
"You'll be able to see when my shorts blew up" - sounds uncomfortable, I'm glad you got through that!
I literally found Lizzie shopping for sailor Moon merch way back when, like 2010's 😅😅
As someone who used to watch pho3nix and his murder mystery videos im happy to see that bigB is still making content
I got such a shock when I saw him in the life series because the murder mystery crew were my OG RUclips group
Lizzie was my childhood I was so glad to see her grow!
I've always been aware of Lizzie bc of Race to the Moon but i had no idea her channel was as large as it was. I also had no idea Joel had been around so long, I thought he started getting big around 2016 for some reason.
Mumbo is just iconic. First hermit to hit 10 mil confirmed.
Etho first to 1m back when 1m was somewhat rare. But never in a 100 years will he reach 10m
yeah etho is just timeless though@@426shelby426
@@426shelby426 the algorithm isnt pushing etho for some reason
Anybody notice that Grian had no subs for like half of the video
Its probably because that's when he created his account, though he probably didn't start making videos then
mmh, like light said. he was probably just watching videos and liking&adding videos to his now privated playlists. i wonder what young grian was watching.
did anyone elses audio go weird near the end?
yup
100%
The weird audio is a RUclips in-built anti-copyright system you can enable on your videos, which does what it can to remove copyrighted audio while keeping in any non-copyrighted audio.
I was born in 2008 and so I didn’t learn about these people until about like 2018ish but I love them all and love their team servers!
I love Jimmy's Jump, it looks so funny to just see him go ZOOM
This is how I learned I wasn’t subbed to Skizz and that I needed to remedy that
Lizzie, Joel, Etho we’re all OG creators. Their best content was actually crazy craft, Joel’s husband and wife series, and ethos long term survival world. Their content I believe drove all the other creators.
I found out about grian through samgladiator back in like 2015 although pretty sure their friendship is non existent anymore
I watched the chart the other day and thought "Solidarity should react to this" and here he did it. Lmao.
yeah 2k19 was grians first hermitcraft series, and the grian and mumbo shenanigans were loved by everyone
can't believe people didn't know Lizzie was one of the OGs lol, alongside Etho and Captainsparklez etc. :P
Really loved this evolving graph on all of my favourite MC youtubers, Jim. Thankyou thankyou thankyou for this.
See here i was thinking lizzie was a proper old school Minecraft youtuber. Its odd, ive always categorised her into the same camp as stampy. Don't know why. I dont do it with anyone else except for BigB, but i think he was close to stampys sister.
As someone who only recently became a fan of these guys, I'm very curious about Lizzie's success because I wasn't there when they started getting really popular and only know her from short term SMPs like the life series and empires.
Same here
There's a very good video that explains her journey through youtube, it's call: How LdShadowlady changed Minecraft forever
Crazy craft (you might know this now)
Watching big Bs subs quadruple in 1 year when he did his pixelgun start is crazy
Never in my wildest dreams I thought I would see such a thrilling commentary on a subcribers graph video.
Joel still maintains a high sub count, even though he sky rocketed the beginning
100k in 2010.. just impressive
I vividely remember watching some of Tango's videos in 2014. Building his classic iron farms. Which looked gigantic back then. I remember him commenting on how he felt he was late entering the minecraft community... Feels like yesterday.
I remember in like 2017 i was a huge fan of unspeakable and i saw a video of him donating to small streamers and he donated like 100 dollars to you for you to change your background.
Like a week ago that same video got recommended to me like 6 years later and i thought it was really funny how one of the RUclipsrs i used to watch all the time donated to a RUclipsr who i now watch all the time
as someone who has grew up watching lizzie and joel (since i was about 6) i never really knew how popular other youtubers were back then. i do now since ive started watching different series like hermitcraft (due to joel joining) and watching different perspectives of people in life series such a jimmy. im now a big jimmy fan
hahahaha, don't worry Tim. I like watching graphs too.
I can't believe TinyHeinz had 100,000 + subs in 2010, that's actually impressive
Mumbo and Grian were really going back and forth for some time and I think they still are
man i love skizz. i personally believe that if he had the ability to allocate more of his time to his creator job that he’d be way higher up. maybe one day..but in the meantime i’ll take all the skizz content i can get!!
Still rewatched a lot of lizzie content during the times she wasn't able to post as much, like 2018-. She is still my fave ❤
Jimmy ‘what happened in 2019’
THE PANDEMIC YOU DOLL!!
2008-2009: Joel 1st, Etho 2nd
2010: Joel 1st, BigB 2nd, Etho 3rd
2011: Joel 1st, Etho 2nd, BigB 3rd
2012: Etho 1st, Joel 2nd, Martyn 3rd
2013-2015: Etho 1st, Martyn 2nd, Bdubs 3rd
2016: Lizzie 1st, Etho 2nd, Martyn 3rd
2017: Lizzie 1st, Etho 2nd, Mumbo 3rd
2018-2019: Lizzie 1st, Mumbo 2nd, Grian 3rd
2020-2024: Mumbo 1st, Grian 2nd, Lizzie 3rd
I knew Lizzie because of collabs with Staceyplays (who I never watched but my friends did), but I didn't know any of the others until 2020 or so, when I started watching Grian in Hermitcraft (which eventually led to me watching Mumbo, Scott and a few others).
2019 was Hermitcraft 6 and when Mumbo and Grian collabed a lot together! I remember watching them reach their 5 and 6 millions both neck and neck
Skizz is in the same mode all beginning creators start out doing start off small and all of a sudden you find you viewership and it takes off! Skizz will skyrocket as he and many of the others are awesome RUclipsrs
there is nothing to be ashamed about liking to watch graphs. they can be surprisingly satisfying to watch, like this one
Why was this so intense 😂
I recall i first came across grian somehow and it was still season 6 of hermit craft and it was about 5 weeks before the end of the season finish
This video is great when muted!
Pearl is so relatable, sticks around with a bunch of friends subbing hehe
Poor Skizz We need to get him above 100k subs come on guys lets do it
Lizzie paused when she and joel got married, the OG’s
Why was joel losing subs from 2012-2013?
Damn i didnt know lizzy was this huge
she is an iconic og minecrafter
for some reason i just realised that jimmy looks like draco malfoy (tom felton)
Skizz deserves soo much more!!
I didnt know lizzie was the first to 2m. First i heard of her was 3rd life
I feel genuinely sad for Skizz, who has been in this game as long as everyone else, but because his content was on impulse’s channel and the Imp and Skizz collab channel, his solo channel never got popular. ThAt sucks tho because the guy is genuinely deserving
