God’s grace is sufficient in what we don’t know and didn’t know. 🤍 While it’s definitely hard to learn through the older to the benefit of the younger, these ideas about life giving home rhythms will bring just as much joy and freshness for your teens as your five year old! One of my favorite things about the classical tradition is that it’s for all persons, no matter the age or place or abilities. So any changes you make now will bring truth, goodness, and beauty to all. And that matters.
Hi there! Thanks so much for all this helpful encouragement and thought provoking content. I’m not sure it was this specific video but you mentioned only buying ‘real toys’ for your children and gave an example of tools that actually work yet are suited for their ages. Would you be able to share where you might find/buy something like that? I think my kids are fairly close in age with yours and would love something like that! Thank you for all that you do! ❤️
Hey Olivia! Happy to. (My kids are 5, 4, and 2!) We aim for open-ended toys that require active play (not passive) and then look for "tools" that allow them to explore/interact with God's world. Their current favorites: Magna tiles: amzn.to/3KGWjuZ Railroad tracks (Ikea) This drill: amzn.to/3Qb1u7J This toolset: amzn.to/3q786tm Butterfly net: amzn.to/3KGWjuZ Compass: amzn.to/3KFx7Fa Trail whistle: amzn.to/3q3QaQj Binoculars: amzn.to/3QcspQk River toys: amzn.to/3q79Ena Watercolors: amzn.to/3D14D6W Colored pencils, crayons, etc. (I like the Stockmar brand): amzn.to/3KFgXvD Kid kitchen tools: amzn.to/3wNl5np They also love building marble runs, tents (so lots of blankets, pillows), playing dress up (non-specific costumes like pilot, astronaut, princess, dragon, etc.), riding bikes, drawing with chalk, watching the wormery, playing in the sprinkler, listening to audiobooks, and tracing from their favorite picture books with tracing paper!
Do you have( point me there,I didn't see) a list of books about child rearing, homeschool/Charlotte mason reads that helped you like books for moms trying to grow and learn on the mommy 🎢 coaster
Where have you been all my life 😂 I love homeschool moms with spunk and who are obviously will read. Binging your videos while lining my kitchen cabinets, so I'm sorry I'm not commenting more. I'm so here for this!!!
I’d much prefer you enjoy thinking on good things while making your kitchen work better for the fam than commenting on my YT. But thank you for the encouragement and so happy to have you here!
Wow. This has opened a door for me. Sitting here with my 9 month old asleep in my arms, having only heard of Charlotte Mason in passing with no understanding or context, this video came out of nowhere and makes an ENORMOUS amount of sense to me.... I think I have been convicted!
Goodness, am I too late with kids that are 4, 6 & 10? I hope better late than never. I was a public school kid, so there's a lot of unlearning left to do in that regard.
NEVER. Never too late. What is life but an education in repentance and an invitation to turn back to God in all things? (Really the line between formal education and sanctification is pretty blurred once you get in deep in the classical world!) I, too, am unlearning my public school ways but I can shout that God is faithful and gentle with those who are with young!
@@thecommonplacehomeschool How encouraging! I very much appreciate your thoughts. I have gleaned so much helpful information from your podcasts and videos. Thank you so much from a fellow sister-in-Christ.
I did Charlotte mason for the early years for my firstborn. for my second (Shes four now) I have done nothing except the fact that shes there for everything I do with my son (now 7) hahaha....but I am only one person and we'll start her in year one at 6 :) I like your videos. keep making them! I"m due with another baby in may and I will prob do the same with this baby. he or she will be there for school that we do with the older two but I am sure I will be to exhausted to do anything extra with them :P
I do think that once the home is built around life-giving rhythms of truth, goodness, and beauty, the littler ones are doing just as they should in ordinary family life!
Hi Autumn, would you care to discuss the ideas of Montessori and Mason, especially for the early years? Both women really seem to have spent much time observing children, and some of their ideas overlap, but of course, some do not. What are your thoughts?
Hey there! Love this question but I don’t know enough about Montessori to offer an answer. I would search for the answers to the following questions: What is a child? What are they for? (Their telos.) What is education? What materials are used in education? Those fundamentals will highlight similarities/differences quickly!
I was so glad for your comments about habits. I have been a bit turned off the philosophy because of what felt like a rigid obsession with habits, but I will definitely go read volume 6. Your videos are helpful and inspirational, going to find your podcast now!
Habits are important but they’re not a one-and-done time of life. (Or else moms would be a lot more virtuous, wouldn’t we? 😉) Mason has to be understood within her fuller context, and the discipline of habit is only one of the three instruments! Important and needed but not the only thing.
I had to rewatch this WHOLE video to see if I had said it or if you were saying it to me. Anna, we've all been there. Never fear! Good news is we can change our tones.
This video is FANTASTIC! Thank you so much. Literally took notes 😂❤️
Note taking is the highest compliment! Thank you!
Truly such a helpful video! Thank you so much!!
I’m so glad! Happy early years to you!
You’re so beautiful! You add so much value with your content!
I'm glad it's a help!!
Ugh how I wish I knew all this when my teenagers were little, I would’ve been an awesome mom. Trying to be better for my 5 year old
