Thanks again for creating and posting this video Matt! Very polished and surprisingly comprehensive overlay of what a typical Toyama Ryu class is like!
Thank you sensei!
i went to this class yesterday for the first time, seth was an amazing instructor he integrated me with the class like i was no stranger. it was an unexpectedly fun experience and i learned a lot of kata and basics in just a few hours. ill definitely be going again next week
Thank you Matt and your Dojo and fellow Iaidoka for sharing a typical session. I’m glad you were able to get out and train a bit.
I hope to do it more in the future.
Fascinating vid, Matt. Nice show of working together to have fun and learn.
Thank you & your dojo for showing a typical class session, its an interesting contrast to see how each dojo have their own curriculum & how they manage new and senior students on different levels. 🙏
This was a great video. I've been interested in Toyama Ryu for quite sometime but unfortunately I don't live anywhere near a dojo. Jason Yoon came out to Vegas a few weeks ago and stopped by the Iaido dojo I train at. He gave us a demonstration of a few Toyama kata and it has only made me want to learn it more.
You are very fortunate to be able to attend a class. My job, and a 2 hour drive Into Chicago keeps me from attending class. Hopefully someday they'll come out to the cornfields.
Some folks in the dojo are in a similar situation. Intermittent attendance is sometimes the only option. I am not sure how much online instruction can help but I think it could be done if you are tech savvy and find a similarly savvy instructor.
@@Matthew_Jensen Samurai Kaz Arts on RUclips has been an excellent teacher.
This is suuuuper helpful. I live in Minneapolis and have been wondering what these different schools are like, especially this one. I feel lucky that we have several to choose from!
Hope you get a chance to check it out.
This was fun to see. I did a bit of Toyama-ryu many years ago and it's nice to recognize many of the katas. I noticed there isn't much sayabiki with your exercises. I can't remember if that's typical of Toyama, or if you just don't need to rely on it very often because you're a huge dude. Thanks for sharing!
Its both.. I am bad at it and not using a sword that requires me to do it.
Great video. Thanks for giving us a glimpse into this martial art, really interesting.
This is a very nice presentation in the "a day in the life" style. I enjoyed your commentary quite a bit. It's well communicated and I think I/we, might copy the style (although I'd get someone else to actually deliver the verbiage). Cotner san is pretty humble, make sure to congratulate him for crushing it in Fla. I hope you guys (and gals) host an event at some point, it'd be nice to visit.
Wish had one near me. Very cool video. Thanks for sharing.
My imagination goes wild at this. "Eric, we don't smoke here during class"
_Flick, puff, triple cut_
"my studies of history showed that Sengoku samurai smoked when they cut, so let's be real here"
Hey looks familiar:) Also looks like they need me back up in Minneapolis next month, or maybe into May, so hopefully I can join in when I'm up there!
Hope you can!
Love your Videos, there always so informative and interesting, keep up the work
Glad you like them!
Super kool
Thanks for the insight of your Ryu.
👍
Nice. Thank you
Great video man
Glad you enjoyed
Is that rubber bands you tie the tatami mats up with? That's a good idea. Much easier than twine.
Yep, they are usually bound with rubber bands. They keep it tight enough.
Yes it’s just rubber bands. You can use twine if you want, but it’s considered old school, lol. Additionally, when you’re rolling 500 or more tatami mats for a competition, rubber bands are a godsend.
Back when I was in Kenjutsu class, we only did cutting once in a while. Ususally when one of the senior students got a new sword. This was before cheap Chinese swords became common, when most of us poor students had a remounted Gunto. So yea, I guess I'm old school. Still it's a great idea, and I have a small number of mats I've been hoarding in my basement that I will try this out on when the weather breaks.
Very interesting, thanks for posting. Ganbatte!
Cool!
I was hoping you'd do a vid on your training. While parts of any training are not as fun as sparring or cutting I think it's both interesting & important to see; like the behind the scenes of a movie.
Wait you are in MPLS? I never knew
man at about 10m in is a shodan for sure. what's your current rank in the dojo? i actually study toyama ryu as well and just passed my yonkyu exam. it's nice to see some representation out there. If your sensei is open to filming and exposure maybe ask about a lesson on hasuji. I feel my kata are pretty solid by my left to right kesa cuts rarely get good hasuji. I practice a lot but that particular swing elludes me on consistent sound. i want to refine it before my next test
There is a man in a black gi and I think he is Shodan, the one in blue is Seth sensei and I don't honestly know what rank he is but I am sure it is above shodan. I will ask about a lesson in hasuji. I don't have a rank in Toyama or Katori. I have not perused sodan but maybe I should.
Hey I'm in MN and I also do HEMA but I'm not part of the CBA. What are the current covid restrictions for the CBA? Not sure if the info they have on the website are the most up to date precautions or not.
Also, do you know if there are kenjutsu schools in the area? I know of kaishin dojo but that's iffy to me cause of the false claim of them teaching kaishin ryu, even though a simple Google search will show that only one person is qualified to teach it, and he's in Japan.
Not sure on the other kenjitsu options. there is a small katori group, the Kaishin dojo, and the toyama school. Not sure if there are others.
It would be nice to see a video of your sensei swords and your classmate swords.
This video makes me miss formal classes, but I'm still unsure because I'd have to change martial arts.
any tips on finding a source for learning japans swordsmanship? i find theres many terms of styles and I think its hard to find local places. There are some online resources but I am unsure if it would be effective way to learn.
You can look up kenjitsu or iaido and see what comes up locally. Where are you located?
LeTtTtTtTsSsSs GoOoOoOooOo
Good video.
i wanna join one..
How often do you do gekiken?
Not often.
@@Matthew_Jensen any footage of it?
Your hakama is looking a tad short brother.
It is, but it works better that way when I train in the snow. I have a longer one but I have not broken it out in a while.
@@Matthew_Jensen I hear ya. I'm studying Muso Shinden Ryu iaido and we have alot of katas that start from kneeling so my hakama gets caught around my foot quite often. I'm thinking of switching to a shorter hakama myself 😂
Since many types of sword play are taught there is there ever a time people cross train or hold an all school tournament of sorts?
Not that I know of.
@@Matthew_Jensen well darn 😂
There have been plans in the works to have a day of cross training between Seiryukan Dojo and the HEMA group that meets at the same location. Unfortunately, Covid and a national shortage of tatami cutting targets has forced us to put everything on hold for a bit. Hopefully soon though!
@@secodav1 when it happens I'd love to see video of it!
@@asa-punkatsouthvinland7145 We’ll see if Matt would be willing to film for us again when the time comes. Maybe we can bribe him with a sandwich or something
Also, I AlWaYs CoMmEnT lEtTs GoO, it's not spam I promise
This is extremely entertaining, Wish i could join a real class myself, Intend to one day, Thanks for sharing Matt was wondering when you would show a video of your class.. How are you getting away with wearing shoes, that's one thing I didn't like about my class is the bare foot thing
Celebrity privilege maybe? I have gone barefoot many times but now I prefer shoes. I need to get tabei, then I will be inline.
I'm concerned.. concerned that you some how don't have more subscribers. It doesn't make sense...
I welcome the growth but I'm not upset. I talk about a niche topic so high numbers are not likely. I appreciate it through.
Why are you wearing shoes?
My delicate tootsies
@@Matthew_Jensen You need a new hakama, its too short.
