- Professional Luthiers and musical instrument makers around the world use mother of pearl to create beautiful custom inlays that give their instruments distintive and traditional appearances. In this film highly skilled Vietnamese artisans and master craftsmen engrave the pearl by hand and create highly detailed inlays for fine musical instruments. You will see the family of artisans manufacture and use simple hand-made tools following age old traditions to create products shipped around the world. These shell by-products are from species that are harvested under stringent environmental protection laws to create a sustainable fishery and conform to all endangered species laws.
I have an uncle who does this back home and its not a sweat shop people. This is how the artisans live and work. In parts of Asia, some people work from home with their families on the floor. What needs to be admired is their skill not the relative conditions. These people don't complain and they take a lot of pride in in their work. They don't need pity. Focus on that, lest they read these comments and feel they live anything lesser than an inspired life. They are artists and that is their studio. Which looks decent as they have nice floors and probably electric AC...some people back home don't even have that.
My Thai wife's grandmother would make silk patterns on her loom under a pole and metal roof structure. Poor people working out in the middle of no where but happier than many people that I know.
It's easy for many westerners to complain from their cushy seats, only viewing the rest of the world through their own biased lens. I appreciate your comment here, as it needs said. As I'm sure is the case with these people, studies have shown that people doing this kind of work wouldn't take a cut in their pay in trade of more "comfortable" working conditions. They sometimes don't have the resources we take for granted, and complaining from afar won't change that. This is how these people will proudly improve their lives and the lives of their families. It's degrading and patronizing to shout them down with misguided "virtues". It makes me sick.
@@NautilusGuitars not westerners. Just Americans.
I think this is a family, a very talented family, with strong work ethic....
Great video showing how this is done. It is amazing how long this takes and how detailed it really is. It definitely shows how creative Vietnamese people are. Vietnam unfortunately has a lot of hidden talent that goes unnoticed. I give it a huge thumbs up!
Very talented people. They are making parts that go into musical instruments to enrich our world, not sure why all these people have bad things to say about this. I can watch these artisans all day.
I use their inlays and I'm glad it helps other artists!
everyone needs a desk and a lamp and a chair ...carbon paper and an electric saw ...can,t watch this ...amazing artists need to be respected x from Australia
This is so cool. It obviously takes much patience and skill. Beautiful. Love the music as well.
Master craftsmanship excited in these demonstrations of skill! Doing things naturally as pleasure allows shows enjoyment in their endeavors.
I'M A PROFESSIONAL TATTOOER, GUITAR BUILDER AND AM JUST NOW GETTING INTO DETAILED INLAY WORK. THE PEOPLE IN THIS VIDEO ARE AMAZING ATRIST THE WAY THEY EASILY MANIPULATE THE SHELL AND BLADES AND MAKE IT LOOK SO EFFORTLESS IS VERTY IMPRESSIVE. ANYONE WHO HAS TRIED THIS KNOW HOW CHALLENGING THIS ART IS BUT I LEARNED SOME VERTY COOL TECHNIQUES HERE, FOR STARTERS THERE BENCH PIN CONFIGURATION IS SO MUCH SMARTER THAN THE WAY MOST PEOPLE INCLUDING MYSELF DO IT. LAYING THE PEICE ON IT'S SIDE AND SUPPORTING THE BLADE ON A WEDGE SHAPED PIN MAKES WAY MORE SENCE, YOUR LINE OF SIGHT IS CLEAR AND BLADE BREAKAGE WILL BE REDUCED BIG TIME BECAUSE YOU AREN'T TWISTING IT BLINDLY. AMAZING AND Y'ALL BETTER BELIEVE I'LL BE PURCHASING MASS QUANTITIES OF SHELL FROM THESE AMAZING FOLKS.
eddie julian yup u and everyone else cuttn cost at the expense of others...u know what happens if someone in family wants to go make more money?
eddie julian the ONLY savin grace here is i can buy directly from a shop there for better quaity than this with only sum interferences...mostly what they have to deal with ..so in depauls case they do whats good for them..over there they r doin best they can and raisn families on it..but if i visted i would ask next contract be done in simple heathier setup for a little more money...after all if ur investin in family from rise t'set teach them to protect themselves in every way FIRST...not put everything on a pedestal first before careful scrutiny...my 2c, i can make change
What the hell are you talking about? I'm talking about inlay techniques you must have read somebody else's post who gives 2 shits about politics or pushing there ideals on someone else. AGOOD DAY SUH!
Dude shut up nobody cares what you think. These guys look happy to me. I would kill to go work and learn from these guys. We all can't be born with an elitist liberal silver spoon in our mouths like apparently you were. What the hell are they teaching people at these weirdo liberal colleges?
That's great. They are very talented for this kind of work.
Exquisite craftsmanship!
as a tattoo artist i saw immediately the saving in time and labor that could be achieved with the use of carbon paper to create a stencil to apply to the shell rather than the time consuming process of drawing up each design freehand, the downside to that idea of course is regularity and consistency, done in this manner each is unique. and the upside to that idea is of course regularity and consistency, there is no room for error.
Cap'n Bluebeard : Each one of this pieces is an unique work of art and that's the whole point of it!
Using more modern techniques as stencil would just serve to massify the product and take away its real beauty, its worth and its soul!
I hope they're getting paid well also . I've seen drum cymbal makers in Turkey and the artisans were working in the same way. They love what they do. They should all be appreciated.
Wow ! They are so patient . Beautiful work and talented .
just came across this demo by accident and stayed to watch. Very dissapointed in the negative comments. What is wrong with people? the workers look healthy and clean, and they are use to sitting on the ground,we have a different culture but please respect other people for theirs.
A lot of people asking about tools and what is used, perhaps to bring in extra money for you all why dont you make and sell them? other people do,just need a simple website with simple features, good luck and God Bless you all. From New Zealand
And the artists are not wearing breathing protection because why???
Very relaxing video. I truly admire this skill. It looks like what he is carving is a "Feagle", a combination fish and eagle. There is hardly any information about the origin of this creature. I have only ever seen it on very old banjos..Vegas, and Fairbanks. These are extremely talented individuals doing this work!! That you for posting this.
Wow, the artists' lungs must be shredded...
Very intricate and beautiful.
Could you share what is the black paint used to fill the carving?
Wow this is so cool!! Very very talented!!!! Not sure why anyone would give this a thumbs down. What is the black product they run into the pearl to highlight the detail?
~Beauty & Peace~
Kyle-
Simply amazing! Very beautiful!
Thanks for sharing this video!
The chinese people is widely known for its skills and craftsmanship in so many arts that I think it's a shame and almost criminal that nowadays most of the chinese factories ONLY manufacture cheap products with low quality materials in massive quantities just to export them to the west and the rest of the world at small prices!
They should invest in manufacturing their historical known products using the traditional ways of their ancestors: the old chinese pieces are real works of art!
I like the way nothing is wasted. Even the engraving tool has been brazed on, so it can be replaced with a sharpened one...after one can't use the old one any more. In the west we throw too much stuff away! I would love to try this! What is the black used to fill in the etching to show the lines...a crayon of some kind?
Hi sir?
Are you Dan Vincent friend?
Ever seen both of you sitting together and he played guitar. I saw at his account, thanks. And sorry if i'm wrong
hallo, im a goldsmith student from Belgium who is trying to learn how to carve mother of pearl. what tools do you need to carve mother of pearl? I want to carve a cloud out of it wich means it will be a quite thick peace of mother of pearl so I would need to carve grooves into it to give it a "3d" effect. I was thinking I would need diamond burs but I feel like it might be to rough? I dont know tho. So if you please could suggest me what kind of burs i would need in order to carve it. A push to the right direction would be major help and i would really appreciate it
Каторжная работа но какая красота ❤
Artistry still reigns...
Happy Family!
Those are not high carbon cutting tools, those are carbide tipped/brazed tools. Longer cutting life.
do you know what is the black "ink" they use to give the color at the inlay?
Very talented
Would it be possible to contact these artisans for a repair of a picture frame I have? Their work is exquisite.
Amazing craft! Inspiring! Thanx
Is this why none of the engraving from Asia looks anything like the vintage engraving? Their lines all have the same value of line. It looks like they don’t actually use traditional hand graver tools and the vintage inlays were done after inlayed into the wood and sanded flush. Also the original engraving included multi line engraving.
I need some inlay for my Guitar. Where do I buy this product?
Nice! I never saw a Chinese sweatshop before!
What kind of shell has flat plates that big?
Where do you buy this pearl shell in lay?
This is very cool. Cannot help ask the obvious questions, is the labor being treated well? a honest well compensated place to work as true craftsmen, OR, is this a mandatory place to work at a quota based sweat shop? If this a nice legitimate place to work, kudos for them, but for pete's sake get them a desk and a comfortable place to sit. Just watching them sit on these tiny lil benches is making me hurt down there...
But they are not fatties and they are flexible, probably because they don't gorge themselves on cheeseburgers and pizza all day.
grandi artisti bravissimi
I wish they would wear masks. That dust is very toxic.
Muy buen trabajo
what is the black rub in stuff the guy used?
Black oil paint stick.
Massages in the back, with happy endings....
What an absolutely ignorant comment
Itt sincsenek telepakolva csúcstechnikával, az eredmény mégis szájtáti. Ha túl vontatottnak tűnik, akkor a csúszkán szépen ki lehet szúrni a következő fázisokat. 16:11 -nél laza a beröppenő törlőrongy is. :D
#szájtáti
If they are being paid alot(those inlays are super expensive normally) then it is not a sweat shop. If they are barely surviving them it is one.
Please wear a mask 😢
Hi i want to putchase the tool set please can some one help me in getting the name of saw and engraving tool or knife please please
+NAVEEN KUMAR they use coping saw for cutting, then the knives are custom made I think. (those are hard metal and sharp)
High carbon steel. Get a piece and make your own. Or maybe something like this: www.hocktools.com/products/knives.html
They are using simple jeweler's saws probably with 06 saw blades. The knives are xactos. The pointed tip pens are scribes. All available on Rio Grande. The black stuff looks to be a black oil paint stick available on Amazon. All simple and very cheap tools. The jerk employing them should invest in some ventilation and some masks. Shell is extremely toxic to breathe.
My boss at work be like 2:11
16:12 magic towel
Those saws frame,,,,
hermoso todo un arte, pero las condiciones de trabajo son pesimas. verguenza deberia de darles por tratar asi a sus empleados y de seguro que les han de pagar muy poco.
The music at the beginning.....Bwaaaa ha haaa ha haaaaaaaa
Super klass
A little arsenic never hurt anyone. People use to take it for good skin 😝
16:10 HOW'D THAT RAG GET ON HIS ARM?????
Yoda
Looks like pretty cramped and uncomfortable working conditions. I wonder if you'd get more out of your employees with a comfortable and ergonomic working environment?
GBMorris Fuck em, make them sniff each others farts.
Where can I get some of those slaves , are they for sale. thank you.
eddie julian this would b best representation of free market except theyre not allowed to freelance
it's looks like a sweat shop....
FRESH THRILLS, DON'T LET YOUR EYES DECEIVE YOU THESE ARE ARTISTS, JUST BECAUSE THEY AREN'T IN SOME FANCY PANTS FACILITY DOESN'T MEAN THIS IS A SWEAT SHOP. THEY HAVE EVERYTHING THEY NEED INCLUDING THERE FAMILY AROUND THEM ALL DAY. I WOULD LOVE TO WORK WITH MY FAMILY I NEVER GET TO SEE THEM BECAUSE I TATTOO FROM 12:00- 3-5:OO AM THEN I GO TO MY WORKSHOP AND BUILD GUITARS UNTILL 8:00 AM THEN WAKE UP AND REPEAT. I LIVE FOR THE WEEKENDS WITH MY FAMILY.
How about protection from the hazardous dust?
solasta one mans mans slave wage is anothers fortune
Solasta - Their studio is clearly open air with a lot of windows, which I know isn't ideal but they aren't locked in a box-like room like we do in the West. Across Asia, many people work in conditions Westerners wouldn't accept because of our very strict health and safety laws. Its highly unlikely that these workers are being 'forced' to work in bad conditions, more that this is just how things are done there. If you actually visit these places, you know that working in this way is very normal - no sense in picking on this one place in their video
Comparing this to a sweat shop shows extreme ignorance of cultural differences and how artisans work across the world
lol crack nail at 7:29
Such talented people.
I am here for this music!
